The story may be sad, but there is a happy part to it -- some SURVIVED and were RESCUED to meet their loved ones again, and to tell their story to the world!! INCREDIBLE!!

He tells this story and paints a picture in a very articulate way .....doesn’t seem to get too excited or emotional ... probably why he survived !!... amazing story !

The book Alive was written in 1974 only 2 yrs after the tragedy. I read it in high school 1980. One of few books I actually completed in high school. Tremendous story of survival.

Imagine how many times this man has told this story 😭😢

I love the way he keeps talking about his mommy. Very sweet.

I would cry for my dear mom no matter if I were suffering from a simple stomach/headache or in a war if I were to ever enter one. Your mother is the only person who will love you unconditionally. If you have a mother alive (and have a good one as well, as in non-abusive, understanding, loving and caring) cherish their attention, care and love. One day, it stops and that day you will miss her the most. No matter the circumstances such as horrifying and tragic as Andes Plane Crash or any other, you will always remember your mother.

José Luis 'Coche' Inciarte, who lived this tragedy at the age of 24, died from cancer on 27 July 2023. Like most of the passengers on that plane, he was not part of the rugby team. With a badly injured leg he had to 'operate on' with a razor blade to drain the pus, and seeing the days go by with no news about the expeditionaries (Canessa and Parrado), he decided to wait until Christmas Eve to let himself die in the Andes. Fortunately, the rescue helicopters arrived on 22nd December. He is described by the survivors as 'the sense of humour in the mountains', and as the one who brought tenderness to the hell they were living in.

Roberto is a hero. I got to meet Roberto a few years ago after suffering a medical problem.what I come to learn is how many l8ves hes saved and touched in the years after the accident. Hes a great inspiration..God bless

Not me I watched the movie alive as a child and it took with me so I rewatched it now

This guy is incredibly wise. I saw other survivals talk, but this guy is really smart, well-spoken and deep. Hopefully no one has to go through this ever again.

I'm a flight attendant for a major airline for 30 years. I've had my share of onboard emergencies. I saw the movie long after I'd heard the story. Words don't describe how I feel about this entire event. I'm so impressed with the humiliation and articulate way how he told his story. How innocent and perseverance and determination paid of. I'm proud of all the survivors especially this man.

I`ve met this guy in person. Such a blessing

It is ASTONISHING that they survived! This is a survival story of the ages. Remarkable men!

The Andes's survivors story fascinated and shocked me as I was 11 years old, when I read Piers Paul Read's book. Of course, I watched the film "Alive!"...and I decided that, one day, I would visit the crash site. I finally went on trekking there in 2017. I was already 50 years old...a middle-aged man on a very, very dificult journey. Although I had climbed mountains since I was 16 years old, I was overweight. So I had to train for several months to regain breath and muscular resistance: It took me over one and a half year to be physically prepared. Of course, we went on there at the time of year when there is no snow, and equipped with all standard mountaineering equipment, as well as guided by professionals who know these mountains well. When I arrived the crash site, the first thing that came in my mind was: "I'm climbing with all this gear, outerwear, protein bars...but Canessa and Parrado had nothing but their will to survive. Wow. They're supermen. They're heroes."

The will and strength of their human spirits will amaze me forever. Two starved, underweight men trudging through snowy, mountainous, dangerous terrain in temperatures of at least minus-20 degrees Celsius for TEN DAYS wearing only regular trousers, shoes, a few sweaters and jacket and hat. It's unbelievable that they made it. Nando Parrado and Roberto Canessa are incredible men. 💙💙

I highly recommend thie book Alive about this incident. I read it multiple times when I was young. Canessa was a true hero.

@@lilsamantha1 That’s not accurate at all. He worked with the survivors, as well as the survivor’s families while writing the novel.

I was very young but I remember the newspaper report about your survival! I recall the picture of you both! God bless you all! I've read the book and follow you all! You are all an inspiration! Thanks for sharing your story!

@Dee R first book was Alive. I now look them up on youtube. Some of the videos are in Spanish. But are fantastic! Some people now hike back to the site! So crazy! Just search. All kinds of stuff will come up.

There is a passage on the book that says that the rancher threw 6 pieces of bread to the man but nando eat 5 and left only one for canessa.

This man is a complete hero, most doctors are, most rugby men are, God bless Doctor Roberto!

You can see the joy of life and then sadness in his eyes when he talks about what happened. Not to him but others and how he survived...

What a beautiful man to tell his story and survival of others.

It's now been a little over 5o years ago but to the remaining living survivors it will always be something that you just can't get over. God bless them all.

@@nezaotonashi9394 That is great you feel that way, but for some of us it is Roberto. I have my reason's why, and i am sure you have yours. I personally feel Nando would not have made it without him. Nando would have left to soon, and the winter storms would have done him in. Also Roberto spotted a road, Nando talked him out of it, had they went to the road, it would have saved them probably 4-5 days. Roberto went on to become a famous surgeon who has saved many more lives, of children! He is wonderfully sweet and way more personable than Nando. So those are my reason's, what are yours?

@J Moore He was just a kid back then and yes i have heard he was a little arrogant, i seen quite a few interviews when he was really young and he seemed very nice funny and outgoing. Where as Nando seemed a bit brooding and unsmiling but nice. They all went thru hell, and i am sure at times he was not in a good mood, none of them were. If he was a bit of a bully back then, he sure isn't now, he still saved all there lives.

@J Moore Honestly Yes, he did, but do you know why? Because others were taking advantage of sicker ones, not pulling there weight at all, he bullied the bully's. He was 19 years old, a kid, Nando was 24 years old. Roberto still a teenager. Had he not been tough like he was with the brains he had, Nando would not have made it alone. He is a way different person now. I am sure the whole experience changed him immensely. Why would you even compare his 19 year old self to who he is now? He saves babies now, he married his childhood sweetheart and is still married to her, all these years. Whatever, you want to conclude, he was a kid, and he had to be tough on some of the others, he wasn't the only one who was...and he was changed forever after that..your like the first person i have ever come across that feels compelled to bash him when you don't even know him.

I have been in situations similar (but NO WAY AS SEVERE AS THIS) and the mantra “do you give up here or do you push forward a few more steps?” Is a solid part of my soul at this point. I use to like the phrase “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” which is usually true for many people however what happens when it kills your soul? These survives had titanium souls. Even if I survived I can’t honestly say I would have been okay. I hope they all know they did what they had to do. No one can judge any actions they choose to take to survive. I pray they are all at peace with the outcome.

I like how he says that he keeps positivity and wash away negative thought, that's a very Uruguayan thing to do. The Uruguayan people is cheerful and loves joking, that's what kept them going too in my opinion ☺️

This is a great story that helps to have a better life. Only we have the decisión of stop suffering and going on with hope. We can not to be stuck in a same place. We can get everything we want. Thank for helping us to undertand the life in a a better way.

@J Moore Of course they do it. Have you ever read the book: I had to survive by Roberto Canessa? He has help so many people financially in a farm that he has to harbor homeless and give them work. The book is writen in an english version.

@J Moore Of course they learned a lot, that´s my opinion i even had the please to chat with one of them, Roy Harley and it was a great conversation about their experience.that they recognized that the help of Sergio Catalán was determinant but they would never have obtained it if they had not left the mountains on their own, without teamwork, but anyway, I respect your opinion, I have mine. The history of the Andes has inspired me a lot.

When he talked about almost dying after the avalanche and the envy of someone who has died…wow! That was deep.

This movie needs to be redone today

The survivor doctor is such a gentleman. Such a huge story behind him.

I couldn’t imagine being in this situation. He is a true hero. I just watched the Netflix movie about this and I cried many times. I also admire the photographs they took not something I would have thought of, but you can feel many feelings from them.

They were so brave and amazing how they were found after Roberto and Nando walk miles to find help. What a terrible ordeal they went through. 😥. I did real the book "Alive" many years ago...

The survivors say that the book 'Alive' tells the facts accurately (although they don't agree with the way Pancho Delgado is depicted in), and that the book 'The Snow Society', written more than 30 years later, describes their feelings during and after their stay in the Andes. In my opinion, both books complement each other.

Amazing people and a situation that made them choose the most difficult course. I can only imagine but the choices made, were without doubt the right ones. If they weren't, we would never know what really happened and we would never understand. Key life lessons and we must continue to learn in the most severe of circumstances/situations - you have all taught us something. God bless and never ever doubt your decisions, no matter what they are. You are true legends.

It's amazing that these guys went on with their lifes after everything they went through. Feeling and Seeing so much suffering and even eating their friends. It shows how strong the human being can be. And I think that's why we are still here.

Psychological specialist were certain that the survivors would need lifelong counselling but that hasn’t been the case. They have all gotten by helping each other when necessary. They all get together as much as possible on the anniversary of their rescue.

@@mako88sbreally? I thought they never reconnected until now like 50 years later. Well I know that Nando and roberto are good friends since then so they have a close relation but I didn’t know that they were close with the others.

@@pearlbooks The book is better, get Piers Paul Read "Alive" one, there is a few wrong things in the movie, the first person to bring up eating the dead to the whole group was Canessa, Not Nando, they movie made it look like a bad thing when Canessa wanted to wait to leave because of the winter, but had they left when Nando wanted to, they would have died for sure. Canessa was right! Canessa was also right about the road as well, Nando couldn't see very well without his glasses, had they gone down to that road, it would have saved them a lot of time and effort, but Nando fought Canessa on that one. There is other things you will find they made different in the movie, but it was still a very great movie. For me, it is the greatest miracle of our time...incredible story of human survival.

Movies are exaggerated and twisted to provide a more interesting plot for viewers. Documentaries are the way to go when you want to learn about real life events.

My mum made me watch this when I was very young And I was so confused by it But at the same time shocked

I’ve never heard anyone refer to the experience as a level of Dante’s inferno before this. Really puts it into perspective and terms you can comprehend

amazing. i cant help but wonder how they were able to direct the helicopters back to the crash site. The snowy mountains would eventually all look the same to me. how do you remember which way you walked, especially being blown around by harsh winds and not thinking clearly through starvation.

Nando, when walking to Chile, was always looking back to the mountains they left behind, he describes how he focused on some parts of the mountain that that looked like a big stain. Even the pilot couldn't spot the crash site that nando was pointing at until they were 200 mts away

The strong tailwind became a strong headwind as the pilot descended about 30 miles too soon, how that happened I don't know. Once the plane was in between the mountain it hit a rotor zone and there was no chance to recover at that point.
