Robert Wickens Gets Back Behind the Wheel

Спорт

This week's guest on The Dale Jr. Download is Robert Wickens. Wickens overcame severe tragedy before getting back behind the wheel in IMSA. Wickens chatted with Dale Earnhardt Jr. and co-host Mike Davis about his miraculous journey since the crash. Driven by a thirst for independence and a desire to return to racing, he fought through various levels of rehabilitation to get to his ultimate goal. That goal? Strapping in behind the wheel of a racecar. At first, E-Sports and iRacing were his proving grounds. Now, the next chapter has begun as Wickens is competing in IMSA's Pilot Series for Hyundai in a racecar with hand-controls.

I must say this for all race fans. Dale Jr will go down as one of the most influential people in all of racing.

I got a bad infection in my back that was growing and pinching my spinal cord. This basicly caused me to become partially paralyzed before the Dr fugured out what it was. I could no longer walk , or feel my feet. I could not drive any more and could not sim race. I had the surgery and I immediately could feel my toes again a little right after the procedure. I am 6 months in my recovery I now walk with a cane most of the time. I am can drive again and I have been doing back to back 40min sprint races and finishing well. I know the feeling of being unable to stand , feel your legs and feet as well as the feeling of being able to do the basic things we take for granted every day. I might not ever get back to the way I was before this but I am happy to be where I am at today . I wish him the best in his recovery . He is a inspiration to the world.

I ended up in a wheelchair 12 years ago and just re-learning all the stuff I did with my feet with my hands is a daily learning experience just to live life. The complexities of a race car and the adjustment of the tactile feeling you must have has to be a tremendous challenge. I saw your accident and God gave you a second chance with some hurdles to deal with. Your positive attitude and not giving up are inspiring. I hope automakers learn from adaptive racing to improve cars for the differently-abled. |Best of luck as you keep going through your life.

I cannot express how impressed I have become at the maturity of Dale Jr. compared to what he seemingly acted like 15 or 20 years ago. Many could take a lesson or two from him. I've seen people over 70 throw a tantrum in need of a timeout. Thank you, although I still want to shake my finger in you face for some of your shenanigans in the past.

On Wickens' youtube channel he has a video from a little over a year ago explaining his iRacing setup, as part of his "Brick x Brick" series. I know nothing about motocross, but it's definitely a fun way to keep yourself involved in motorsports, even if you get an inexpensive setup.

It's a feel good story that keeps getting better. Thanks Dale for arranging this interview. It's one to remember for sure.

I am glad to see Robert racing again. I started watching Indy car racing again right as he was starting to get noticed, and became a fan. He was coming on like gang busters, was fun and exciting to watch, and seemed to be heading right for the top. I was so bummed for him after that wreck. It would be awesome to see him do it again. Good luck, Robert. And thanks for the show, Dale. Good stuff!

So, what happens if Robert gets into an incident and there is a fire? Are there additional steps/precautions/measures, or is that just a risk he has to take? I am just picturing an accident with a fire that an ambulatory person could escape from, which could prove very problematic for him.
