Excerpts from Robert Liberace's dvd "The Portrait in Terra Cotta" in which he teaches how to sculpt a portrait bust in terra cotta clay. Hello Robert! You are an awesome inspiration and guide for someone like me! I am a beginner in sculpting and would like some advice on if there is a certain brand of terracotta that you would suggest ? I am also wondering if water based or oil based clays would be better for me to begin with? I do want to avoid cracking and much as possible! Thanks for anyone’s help in advance!

It's water based clay, ceramic clay, if you will. It has to be fired or cast for permanence but ther3es really nothing like it for that paint-like ductility.
