Robert Hanssen Arrest - 20th Anniversary

Фильм және анимация

February 18 marks the 20th anniversary of the arrest of Robert Hanssen, one of the most damaging spies in U.S. history.
A former FBI Supervisory Special Agent, Robert Hanssen's job in the 1980s was to search for Soviet spies. Instead, from 1979 - 2001, he was slipping Russia classified information, including the names of three KGB intelligence officers secretly working for the US. Two were executed.
The FBI knew by the 1990s that there was a Soviet “mole.” In 2000, information from a Russian source helped them zero in on Hanssen. After months of investigation, agents arrested him 10 minutes after he filled a dead drop in a Virginia park.
Hanssen pled guilty to 15 counts of espionage and was sentenced to prison with no parole. Today, the most damaging spy in FBI history spends 23-hours a day in solitary confinement.

The crazy part is that the FBI caught Hanssen by taking his phone. Where he kept his messages to the Russians. On his *phone.*

That is patently untrue. Read the book Spy by David Wise. He had a palm pilot but it was only a tiny piece of the evidence. The dossier given by the Russian defector was the real key.

The thing is he didn’t do it because of the money, or becuase he believed in Russia. He thought he was smarter, his ego was big. Probably did it cuz it was so easy to do.
