Robert Hand Responds to Deborah Houlding

Ойын-сауық

An interview with esteemed astrologer Robert Hand where he responds to Deborah Houlding’s recent claims about the history of house division, including some mischaracterizations that were about him personally, and sets the record straight about the recent history of the recovery of ancient astrology.
Rob was one of the three main founders of Project Hindsight, which was a translation project for ancient astrological texts in the 1990s.
In the interview we discuss the clear evidence for the existence of whole sign houses in ancient astrology, and Rob relates his firsthand accounts of the recovery of Hellenistic astrology, including sharing some stories about his time at Project Hindsight.
Along the way, Rob also shares some of his perspectives and experience from his 63-year career in astrology, and we hear about his life and work, as well some oral history about the recent recovery and revival of ancient astrology.
This is a followup to episodes 386 and 387, titled Deborah Houlding and Whole Sign House Denialism, and Demetra George Responds to Whole Sign House Denialism, and each of these episodes includes additional material and discussion about this topic:
• Deborah Houlding and W...
• Demetra George Respond...

Awesome to see Rob Hand speak to this!!! Chris - I appreciate how you are going to first hand sources to clarify what really happened. I recall being at a table with him discussing the idea back at Rob's mind-blowing workshop on ancient astrology (in San Francisco through Kepler University in the late 1990s). Last week I started another reading of his Horoscopic Symbols book - which shows how much he has valued understanding and clarity above all else. I would love to see an interview in the future to see how or if the ideas he presented in that book may have evolved since he wrote it or just review of topics of his material from his point of view today. Rob Hand has been a pioneer in the type of research you promote on this channel, which underscores the strengths and history of astrology as a serious part of our human heritage.

Exceptional use of platform and reach. Thank you for these history lessons. I really hope all this work helps the astrological community of today and tomorrow feel safe and comfortable respecting each other regardless of how we choose to practice. I'm also impressed to have it illustrated to me how little modern history I know. When you described Rob Hand as the greatest astrologer of that time my first impression was "I thought that was Chris Brennan". It's important to give us the opportunity to reflect on our own conceptions of the present.

I remember hearing Rob Hand speaking quite excitedly about Project Hindsight at the Brighton UK Conference in 1989. Most people were pleased and I still have the audio tapes I bought then. At later conferences here in Australia I heard more and over the years saw the translations begin to come out rather quickly. I have also studied with Deb Houlding and have never stopped been a practicing astrologer since 1980. There’s room for many approaches in our divinatory art. I was taught using equal house, moved to Placidus etc as mentioned by older astrologers and loved the practice of drawing a chart by hand. So much was revealed through the ancient process. I hope tolerance will prevail. It’s important to honour all the ancient knowledge, plus the newer information. 🙏🙏🙏🐨

Much needed clarification and conversations by many scholars in the astrological field. For centuries people have debated and argued their beliefs in the systems they were and are using. In the end, it is whatever works for each individual. Everyone can always agree on the big picture at the same time as forever fight about the details. Using two systems may be the answer. Time will tell. Pluto in ♒️ perhaps will reveal. This has been illuminating. Thank you Chris!

A Marathon for you Chris and for us, going through so much material. Basically what Deb is saying is that P Hindsight and associated people Bamboozled the Public and made money out of it, thus opening herself to Libel. Your step by step demolition of the charges are commendable and exhaustive. Plus interviews with other members of the community, all revered astrologers debunks her theory completely. I am a Vedic and Modern astrologer. In the Indian system whole sign houses are used extensively and they give amazing results. For us there is not much of Psychology which is required. People want to know when a certain event will happen and we predict 80% correctly which is quite good. In the end I feel sorry for Deb Houlding. She has riled a Scorpio and that can be Dangerous thing to do 😅

I couldn't agree more with Robert Hand's thoughts on the tropical vs sidereal subject. I use both and I say all the time that it is a shame that we use the same names for the divisions - the "signs" - of the two different systems. The tropical zodiac is seasonal, while sidereal zodiac is constellational, and those are not the same things, but they are both real things, and they are doing things. Mr. Hand's talk on the subject that he mentions is excellent. If he sends it to you, Chris, as he mentioned doing a the end of the video, absorb it, as it is very good information indeed.

With respect to your video I would like to add that the 30 degree division is to calculate the sun transit and the sun and moon conjunction 12 times during the total orbit .Hence a 12 sign division. But the actual division is of at times more and less than 30 degrees. Off course in this the constellations that are the real layer behind the signs reveal and show that the division is more of an easy portioning of the zodiac. In India in Krishnamurti we follow the Placidus system. And this gives a great results .Also the Vedic system brings the divisional charts that dissect each house and magnify it, Thanks for the video

Robert - I met you many years ago in Bristol UK - I have just been checking your Planets in Transit book for the movement of Pluto into Aquarius. I am your age! Taurean with Pluto two degrees in Leo - sq .Venus/Sun I had to smile when you write that a Pluto opposition cannot be possible as it would be beyond normal life expectancy - Hi there we are still - I'm off my head for the past hour or two processing goodness knows what in my subconscious! hope you are managing to do the same!!!!

So, you guys were like the Beatles with your own Yoko? Awesome. Finished this and the George interviews; fantastic. I don’t plan to finish the direct Houlding response though. I did eventually figure out that I most likely came across “accidental” houses from a series of Schmidt experimentations by another astrologer. I do recall the equal house topic coming up within that which is what Chris said. I’m actually quite interested in the future book Hand is hopefully publishing soon, it’s the area I’m most into in terms of astrology. Just as with diversity, I’d hope there’s more diversity in terms of viewpoints/philosophy that can expand the audience or add different views to the conversations. Example: I could site The Emperor’s New Mind as a similar lateral move for those opposed to a Neoplatonic viewpoint. I actually think there’s a video series on KZread from maybe the 90’s, could be from the BBC which has Penrose explaining the theory. Yes, just find the 🏆, I can’t recall if it’s a 2 part series. I’ll say I’d like to remove Jung, but I’m pulling hyperbole. Jung did contribute a psychology of fate that connects both determinism/fatalism and psychological views. A placement can symbolize an experience as well as an adaptation to said experience(s). Also in tune, I’ve known people who have over identified with benefic placements with malefic results who also sort of dissociate or are in denial of other placements which is a danger of astrology, but it’s likely if it wasn’t identification with that, it’d be something else; it’s also extremely difficult NOT to do that. A more humorous story, I was wondering what philosophies I’d include and I knew I wanted to flesh out some houses better. Like, the 12th comes off as symptomatic more than actual significations sometimes. It started to click that wanting to apply Arthur Schopenhauer to the topics is likely very closely associated with this since that chart and his philosophy is very “cadent”. If I recall, there’s a Venus 10th which is his liking of aesthetics. (Looking). I did remember the spirit/ruler opposition in 6/12th house, there’s actually a similar, yet, reversed exaltation lot. One thing I didn’t expect to actually find and found in an unexpected way in traditional astrology was the lot of exaltation and ruler. If I did break a barrier and got into astrology, there’d likely be a strong cadent tone to it as opposed to a type that Hand mentioned that could be more of an angular astrology. But with “identification”, it’s possible that’s why I’m about to experiment with signs replaced by formulas. To me, something like the very real stereotype of libra’s having trouble making decisions makes so much more sense if you factor in Saturn is exalted in libra. Instead of viewing it as this Venusian passiveness, it may be more of how it’s described by people with strong libra placements that they’re thinking more on the consequence of the decision along with not exactly caring too much about the decision itself. Other patterns, like noticing that I, myself, have sun in Leo. It’s exalted in aries (no planets), but its exaltation ruler is in libra which is a sign based sextile. I kind of get a feeling that matters in terms of an overall interpretation as opposed to just mars in libra with SB’ed sextile since libra is the suns fall. Moon in Aquarius, I actually KNOW that’s not always very fun. The only thing about Schopenhauer that I worry about is it could be easy for someone to take some of it too far where they get all quantum thinking they’re Neo in The Matrix. We’ve already been down that road for a while though. 🧚‍♀️ I do know, what caught my attention about one Valens technique is how well it aligns with Saturn return timing, I think it’s in the length of life technique. One view on quadrants in terms of more of a psychological view is what I call “spacial awareness”, it more about how we go through life and gain experience and also develop. We obviously become more aware of aversion houses, but it’s not that strong or it’s strong in others sometimes. Length of life as duration of life, yes. But I do wonder if there’s a potential shift in strength/dynamics by how we as humans develop into adults slowly and become more “set” at around 30 years old. A rough 27-30 degree angular shift and some house overlap in terms of awareness is possible even though the WSH system remains the natives base chart in terms of prediction. I DO somewhat wonder if the totality of the rulership schemes also help quadrant houses work, it just may lot be the MAIN ruler that’s being noticed. Awesome episode, Demetra was great (as always). I hope Hand can make it on more episodes sometime to discuss more on Neoplatonic philosophy. PS: one thing in astrology I was looking for that ended up part of this controversy was said technique. I just didn’t need to use the entire Valens technique to know what it was. Anyone who knows me knows about that mars and Jupiter aspect where it’s extremely weird.

I think a fundamental issue in the dispute with Deborah Houlding is being overlooked: from the point of view of astronomy, the WSH are extremely different from a Quadrant House System. Calling both of them "house systems" gives an erroneous implication that they are more similar to each other than they really are, and are almost as different as zodiac signs and houses. Ancient astrologers from Valens to Morinus used both house systems and that makes sense because they are very different from each other. When Deborah Houlding says that the ancients did not advocate a Whole Sign House system, she is heavily influenced by the sense of what a house system is from the point of view of the ideas she was influenced by from 15th and 16th century astrologers. We have a huge semantic problem that has resulted in a huge amount of misunderstanding and unnecessary polarization between two camps of astrologers.

They are both just systems of dividing local space into twelve sectors and then assigning areas of life to them. That's it. Attempts to claim that one isn't a "real" house system because it doesn't conform to the same rules of dividing the local space in the exact same ways are just weak and unsubtle attempts to claim the supremacy of one system over another.

@@TheAstrologyPodcast, yes, WSH, QH and Equal houses need to be affirmed as reasonable ways to divide the local sky. Thank you for bringing out this very important point. I do not think there is a bias-free way to use language in this context. Calling WSH, QH and Equal Houses all "house systems" implies that they are direct alternatives to each other, and they have striking differences that get overlooked. Calling one a house system and another not a house system has the problem that you describe: elevating one over the other because "house system" has acquired a high status in the astrological lexicon. I advocate calling all of these "house systems" but recognize that they are not directly comparable. WSH, QH and Equal Houses are 3 different animals. One possible definition of a house system is: "any division of the ecliptic plane in relationship to the diurnal motion of celestial objects." This definition excludes measurement along the celestial horizon (azimuth and altitude), Michael Erlewine's Local Space Houses, and along the prime vertical (mundoscope) as house systems. Another definition is "any division of the local sky". Using this definition the mundoscope, local space houses and azimuth-altitude coordinates are house systems even though we do not usually call azimuth-altitude and the mundoscope house systems. I am not sure which definition is best or if we even need a precise definition of "house system". I will go with the majority opinion on this.

I have a question for Robe Hand on the method he used to check if the approximate birthtime of the woman born in Nicaragua was right: Is this a method he uses always, because the 9th houes is supposed to be the highest placement of the Sun during the day and it is related to the 4th? The 4th is also related to the ASC plus being related to the MC. I understood that this gave him the clue in this case when analizing the factors he mentions. So does this work always as an approximation? I find this approach very interesting when you don't have more clues. As an instance, I know when my father was born, the day and placement but not the exact time and this can be complicated to find it out: he was born in 1920 (would be 103 if he was alive). This method could allow me to move the chart until I find a correlation bt 9th, 4th and ASC as described? I still don't know how to rectificate a birthchart, thoug I have many facts about my dad's life, og course.

I will say this again, arguing about houses is pointless. It doesn't matter if something is ancient, or new. If it gives you accurate results, and helps you better uncover your chart, and gives you good predictive insight, then house preference is irrelevant. WSH is my favorite and I still go back to placidus sometimes for little extra tidbits. As I learn WSH better, I am needing placidus less and less. It's all about personal preference.
