    Kimmel was trying to be silly and funny and Robert Downey Jr didnt get his humor and was pretty easily offended because he misunderstood the silly humor and got mad about it; part of this is on Kimmel because when he saw that Robert Downey Jr was upset he tried to correct it with further silly humor, with Robert didn't get, so it got worse. Kimmel needs to be simploe and clear with with humor next time for this guest to avoid misunderstandings.

  • @Rick-the-Swift

    @Rick-the-Swift

    @@HandsomeJelly I agree 100%. I thought RDJ was epic in Tropic Thunder but that was really the writing and directing as much as anything. A thousand actors could have pulled off his role, and been just as funny or even funnier. Imagine Jim Carry, or even Tom Hanks playing Kirk Lazarus. Hell Willem Dafoe for that matter. That sh!t would have still been hilarious. Same deal when he played Wayne Gale in Natural Born Killers. Great role, but it was the writing and directing that made the movie, plus the entire cast, Woody Harrelson and Rodney Dangerfield etc. all absolutely killing it. But again, throw a dart at the board for at least a dozen actors that could have pulled off Wayne Gale's role. Rowan Atkinson would have smashed it compared to RDJ, IMO. But what movies or roles has RDJ done that was really moving or inspiring? Tony Stark? lol. Talk about a total sell out of a role for him, although I admit he has done better as a super hero than many other big name actors have done. Christian Bale as batman, for one has been among Hollywood's suckiest disappointment franchises.🤦‍♂️

  • @Rick-the-Swift

    @Rick-the-Swift

    Actually on second thought, "Wayne Gale" in NBK was probably Downey Jr's best role to date. The character's personality was already very on point with RDJ's own personality in real life, IMO. He was right for the job, but I can still imagine others would have done well with it too. Will Dafoe again, would have likely been a phenomenal Wayne Gale.

    This is really interesting and I do think there's tension between them here, probably stemming from jimmy's crass joke. But how talk shows work is the host and the guests will talk before the show and go over little anecdotes they will discuss later on camera. They do this in case the guest starts going off on a random tangent or freezes up or whatever, the host can redirect them back to the point and keep the show entertaining. That's how hosts just "happen" to have videos/pictures/whatever cued up and ready to go at the end of what seems like a spontaneous story. The patriots side step was almost certainly a fun story they had discussed beforehand, with the punchline intending to be "I think Chris just realized this is exciting last night." "But you didn't care at all" "nope, don't care" So Jimmy was probably trying to save the interview at that point by directing it to chris and the patriots, not trying to go for a jab. What you're reading as distress at that point is actually RDJ falling into step with the energy he told the story beforehand. So Jimmy was ushering him to the punchline, not taunting him. But yeah RDJ is crazy uncomfortable this entire time, I actually wonder if Jimmy had asked if he wanted to go for some more edgy/lewd humor and RDJ had vetoed it and that's why he's so on edge once he says the thing about his pants. Nothing Jimmy does seems to make up for it.

    This is just way off based on what I have read about the man. I certainly don't know him any better than anyone here does, but I have seen one very consistent factoid about him, as it specifically relates to interviews. This was mentioned in the biography written about him: The Fall and Rise of the Comeback Kid... and it is something I've seen various costars of his note, or hint at in many interviews. Basically the key of it is; none of us has ever seen Robert Downey Jr. This guy we watch get interviewed is another character. The man is, after all, a more than capable actor (any one person here who has seen Chaplin I dare you to argue with my assertion that RDJ is one of the finest actors of our time). If you watch any interview he has ever done with this perspective it gives all these interactions a whole new dimension. It becomes obvious at times when he gets playful with someone or when he gets bored of the same questions so he ramps up the persona a bit and generates tension to amuse himself, or to see if the people around him can feed off that and join-in. You can *really* see it when he does larger, group interviews, or panels, and pay attention to how his costars react to this "RDJ Character". Those aren't phony, hollywood, kiss-ass laughs from people who are keenly aware of which person in the room tops the bill... no, those are the laughs of actual friends and coworkers who have a much better understanding of who this guy actually is, and they're getting to see the act live. Seriously, find any interview EVER with him, and watch it with the idea that RDJ is acting in that moment, and tell me I'm full of shit. Incidentally, I very well could be. I've read this in an unauthorized biography, and seen odd comments by some of his costars which does reinforce the theory I've posited here, but I possess no special knowledge.

Also, celebrities do not have a choice to appear on these shows because it’s often in their contracts. They break contract, they don’t get paid, possibly sued, and black listed.
