I absolutely LOVE that first _Ironman_ movie and most of the Ironman scenes from that film remain some of the best in the MCU. ...but to be fair, that very first "suit up" scene in the newly minted Ironman suit did NOT age well _at all._ The cg was SUPER janky and very VERY bad. At the time of it's release (2008) I remember being awestruck. But rewatching that particular scene the flaws are magnified and very obvious.

i think its a 50/50 you dont want them wearing the suit the entire time, but you still need them for reference, and it can be important to have scenes where the actor is wearing a full suit because it gives more weight than what cgi would give, its why robert d j had to wear the chestpiece and helmets most of the time because it was the most important spots that needed to look real like with the arms and legs you could just cgi and edit those as need be, its why gwenyth paltrows scene in avengers end game looked so wonky because it was Entirely CGI, they didnt even make a mask mold for her face as reference to make it look right, its why cgi should never be used 100%

This is why practical effects should be respected, the actors who wear them have about 100 different things that could easily hinder their performance and yet they make magic happen. Cgi can be cool if the artists are given enough time and care, but practical + CGI enhancements will ALWAYS reign as supreme. To this day I still think the effects of “Where The Wild Things Are” are still some of the best combination of practical puppets and cgi enhancement. It still looks real.

  • @Dracorientalis

Yeah is a bit a weird one... it was the exponential cost! CGI was more expensive BUT was cheaper to achieve the level of "realism" that was increasingly desired at the time, that would cost more and take longer if it was done with practical effects, artists and specialists, multiple models of same thing for different shots massive sets and there construction workers to build them even multiple versions of the same set and re-shoots themselves plus potential theft of those models which often happened and still happens! And you are right because NOW CGI is the 'go to' but they don't but put the money in order to make worth while and it looks shite and jarring after a couple of years! However by just throwing out a bunch of movies like this the make money and they don't care if the movie was bad of look bad they just trying to take care of parents that have no interest but still bring their with kids to see those movies because NOW, it doesn't need to look real! It just needs to sell toys! The opening weekend tickets are just a bonus

The real helmet doesn't just save the studio money on CG. It also makes the final product look more real, not only because the helmet is actually there, but because the actor wearing it moves like he's wearing a helmet. He feels the weight and limitations of it and moves accordingly. That's why the first Iron Man film feels like we're seeing something actually happening, and Endgame feels like we're watching Saturday morning cartoons.

Iron Man armor model 29, a.k.a the Extremis Armor. First appearance 2005. It was essentially the first sort of nano-tech/compressed-tech suit that he had in the comics and it was 3 years before the first film even released. So no, RDJ isn't the reason anybody has anything in the MCU, it's all just showing people shit that existed in the comics already... Furthermore, going from physical props to CG overlay is infinitely better for both the actors and the filming process as it reduces the amount of cuts you need to make for everything to look seamless, and the physical props need a bunch of editing done to make them look "right" anyway so they're not just 1:1 using the thing and showing us how it looked on set.

@@Noa_persico I'm not sure what you are getting at. Nano-tech or not, the problem is that they don't add size that match the thickness of the helmet. Even if it's nanotech, it has to still build up a thick layer so it actually has rigidity and strength. So this is why the suit looks so much better in the first movie, because it is made based in a real suit built up around RDJ's body. It's a similar story with e.g. Master Chief's armor in Halo. The only armor that realistically makes sense is the one from Halo 4, as that one is the only one bulky enough to actually fit a human inside of it. While I love and prefer the looks of the Halo 2 and 3 armor, the size of the person inside that suit has to be very skinny.
