RB is outlining his main strategy in understanding Organic Chemistry; The Theoritical,Physical methods to identify and characterize compounds and using separation techniqes to obtain pure crystals;very beautiful. This is the basis for RBs own success in this field.

RB had the amazing ability to put results within a General Framework of understanding encompassing all of Chemistry.Everthing had to fit logically together. All options needed to be evaluated.

Wonderful video! But listening to his enthusing about "modern methods" (some of which are now almost comically out of date) makes me realize how far we have come since then)!

As an NMR spectroscopist, I wonder what Woodward would think of the possibility of NMR ala 2015 in which carbon-carbon correlation at natural abundance on a few mgs of strychnine be acquired in a couple of hours or a natural abundance 13C-15N correlation spectrum acquired overnight!

Gary Martin Oh, it's intimidating to think what he would "think" of modern spectroscopy capabilities. Toward the end of his life, Woodward was beginning to build a solid bridge between organic chemistry and biochemistry; most of his syntheses were of biologically important molecules and it seemed he had developed a special interest in the chemistry of the biologically living. Had he lived longer, he would have most certainly accelerated the usage of novel spectroscopy to elucidate this branch, and - due to his unusual intelligence - he probably would have exploited the sophistication of today's instruments to produce mountains of data every week.

I would guess sometime in the mid to late 1970's . Woodward died in 1979.

Camels or benson and hedges?--too bad society norms glorified smoking at the time. Had he lived longer to further apply his inspiring genius, Woodward would have met his match contributing to the study of morphogenetic regulation of the cell. I'll bet he would have been great pals with that guy at Janelia, yeah that nobel laureate. What a great honor and responsibility for those who were graduate students of Woodward.
