Robben Ford & His Dumble Overdrive Special [He Plays It, We Play It!]

Музыка

Robben tells the story of this genre-defining amp, and we invite some friends over to play it!
Welcome to the show.We are delighted, humbled and quite frankly still in shock to have been able to make this video. Robben Ford joined us in a previous video to discuss his current rig and playing - watch it here: • Robben Ford At TPS! [N... - but he also brought the Dumble Overdrive Special amplifier and 2x12 cabinet that he has used on every major release since Talk To Your Daughter in 1983.
It is an amp of incredible significance not least because of its sheer rarity and the elusive nature of everything surrounding Alexander Dumble, but also because it is the amp that helped shape Robben’s voice on the guitar as we know it today. We’ll leave the rest of the story to Robben in this video and express our utmost gratitude for the opportunity to tell it via That Pedal Show… and indeed letting us play it with a few mates which forms the second half of the show.
Massive thanks to Robben Ford of course, and to Jake Loosemore and Charlie Allen for also being such wonderful humans.
Enjoy the episode!

What kills me the most is the CLEAN channel has infinite sustain AND musical harmonic feedback. The clean channel is doing what most want from a driven channel. I could listen to that clean channel all day. Harmonic, rich and just lively. So very alive. Ridiculous.

Don't think I'll ever be able to play a Dumble amp, but I get the feeling you just described playing through my Soldano. I got it for the famed overdrive channel, but it's the clean channel that's the most addictive. This Dumble sounds bonkers.

  • @jamesemerson4102

It really does and this is one of the reasons why putting the zendrive in front of the amp still sounds amaaazing even though it's "just a pedal" and not the od channel itself. The Clean channel is already doing a lot of the work and all of those harmonics are there. I have a pretty amazing ods clone with old vintage bassman transformers and I find this to be the case with my amp. The overdrive channel is absolute magic though with humbuckers or a P90. The clean channel feeds back! amazing clarity and chime, and dynamics!

Hey, I have had a ‘59 Bassman since forever now that was found outside in the elements. Perhaps it’s sac religion to talk about gutting it’s transformers for Dumble style build but I don’t like that cramped chassis to begin with and the amp has too much breakup for my taste overall. No feedback in that circuit, definitely feedback while still playing clean. Nothing beats a simple short signal path with quality parts which begs the question- what tubes are in that thing ? I have another insane amp for headroom but it’s freaking huge and a boat anchor. The Bassman is much easier to live with if I can stabilize it. I probably had a bad set of rectification bottles because I saw the lightning in power tubes on the Bassman and killed the resistors on the Sunn 1200 using the same rectifier tubes. I parked those amps 18-20 years ago and this video peaks my interest in bringing them back to life. Also remembering my great friend Jim Hanley who helped get these amps running and introducing me to Thiel ported cabinets loaded with EV-M’s wow! 4x12 is cool for metal but for everything else 1x12 is perfect, in stereo of course 😄

Dan, I had a dumble and what I noticed is that it was like a violin made by the old masters. As it aged, it gain a vibrancy and life of its own. It did not amplify a sound, but gave it a breath of life so every note became its own unique life. The cleans had an innocence of achikd whike the overdrive gave you that old wisdom of a person that has lived a full life of adventure. I hope you understand what I'm trying to say. It says a lot about just how good Robben Ford is. When Mick said "play", Robben did just that without any hesitation and sounded great. He doesn't play processed music, but rather something from his core. So nice to hear in the TPS setting. I'm pretty jaded, but these 2 videos where really special. Thanks!

Thank you guys. Like others said I think this is a hugely important film. The closest most will ever get to being in the room with one of these legendary amps. I could listen to Robben talk about his friend all night. It was moving when he visibly got emotional talking about the genius of Alexanda Dumble.

Thank you all again! Big lift of joy to the human spirit, and I'm sure others felt the same way. Blown away again, and haven't smiled this much since the last episode with Robben. 😇 I'm still blown away with that Miles Davis live aid thing with Robben too. Saw it live on tv and var'd it and watched it over and over, and luckily we can still find it on KZread. Thanks again, cheers, and sincerely bless your hearts!

Any video with or about Robben Ford is a must watch! Loved the history of how he eventually ended up with his Dumble. By the way, there are some mighty fine guitar players in that room.

Without watching the entire video yet. That is just perfect. Clean with no boost is just perfect. It’s at that point where you can play anything. Then you have this little button that says “get stuffed” to anybody else that says I’m louder, I’ve got more gain. It’s absolutely magical

Wow 2 Robben Ford videos within a couple of weeks!! I saw Robben Ford live in Adelaide, Australia last year. WHAT A TREAT! He brought his Dumble with him, and played in a fairly small setting, so I was very close up. What incredible playing and tone!! I’m 37 now, but was first introduced to his music in high school by a music mentor, who lent me his ‘Talk To Your Daughter’. This was the first album I heard from Robben Ford and I loved it! These have both been special episodes of That Pedal Show, and now I AGAIN have a hankering to get my hands on a Zen Drive 😂 or perhaps to fire up my Mad Professor Simple pedal (discontinued now) which I understand covers similar territory so it’s now going back on my board to play with and experiment. Thanks Robben! Thanks Dan and Mick!

As expected, it was a delight to hear such great tones but as usual, it was even more of a delight to see your guys reactions, interactions and genuine love for this stuff. You can tell that a lot of thought was put into how to present this video and in typical TPS fashion, you did it in a way that felt totally genuine and real while also maintaining the highest level of quality and in this instance the appropriate amount of respect and reverence that this subject matter deserved. The gear is great but it is always you guys that I enjoy the most about TPS. Bringing in Jake and Charlie for this one was another thoughtful choice and a fun addition that added to this video in a really great way. Thanks so much for the amazing work that you guys do.

Hard to put into words, but his whole approach to playing guitar, as well as his talent and skill plus his Dumble amp really inspire me to play more melodic lines, rather than just blast scales. Great episode, really loved everyone's playing here, very well done indeed!!

What a lovely fella Robben Ford is, as well as such a phenomenal player. I had the pleasure of seeing him play in Sydney a couple of years ago and it was a fantastic concert. He used the one tele for the whole show, may have been the one in this vid, but he didn't have the Dumble as I recall. The Dumble does sound so wonderful even through YT, in the room it must be glorious. I can see why it's a sound so sought after. Hats off to Dan and Mick for this, one of their best yet.

Even in the recording there is something special about this amp. Definitely some of the best recording you have done. I loved the story about Larry Carlton. I’ve had that type of experience myself, plugging in to a great rig, and it just didn’t do it for me. Often times I hear someone demo a piece of gear and really love it, but then when I play it I realize that it might speak to me, but I cannot speak through it. So glad for you all getting this experience!

Brilliant video every way you look at it. It's especially insightful for those of us who have and will never see or hear in person, let alone own a Dumble. And of course it's impossible to virtually get the feel of what it's like in the room, but just seeing that big grin on Robben's face as he plays tells us how good it is. He was clearly having a great time. Thanks for making this available to all of us and for asking the questions that give us a glimpse into that world. Cheers!👍👍

I always praised on how elegant and efficient his left hand was, but watching these 2 shows I suddenly rediscovered his amazing right hand touch, control and feel. About the amp, nothing needs to be said, really, over what you did. It does speak for itself. A piece of art, labour and passion, that delivers tones like no other. Just incredible. I have come to the conclusion that people who say “I don’t get the Dumblething” have never had the luxury of actually playing a Dumble amp. Man was a genius, a tunnel-visioned artist whose art was the procurement of “tone”. Thank you so much for gifting us this.
