The thing is $4.5 million missing all at once? Or in small increments of $500,000 a month here and there. If $5 was quietly removed from my checking account that currently has $15,000 in it, I wouldn't notice it right away too. Hell, my kid had Spotify withdraw $15 a month every month for more than a year after she said she cancelled the service. She hasn't used it for that time period and didn't even know. Had Spotify withdrawn $150 at once for the year, you bet she'd be livid. But, $15 a month at a time, and most people won't even question it. Not sure why it's hard to believe Ohtani's story. Dude doubled down and if it backfires, this would be bad for him.

@@Tiredofcasuals you're being fair, but if you look at the totality of all Rob's comments about Ohtani, and when he picks and chooses to talk about him, and what he chooses to talk about (never praise, only critiques), you start to realize he's biased. And yes, when you look at the facts that we have, you can easily make an argument one way or another. But if you're objective about it, you realize the arguments against Ohtani are all relatively easily dispelled, while the arguments for him are much stronger. If you're biased, you won't care about weighing the facts though, you'll just fall towards one side and bury your head in the sand

I'm Japanese, but I want Americans to know about this new translator. I feel like he only translates about 80% of what's said. For starters, he uses "obviously" a lot, but Shohei never says "obviously" in Japanese. I think a real professional translator should have done this. Shohei's explanation in Japanese was perfect and left no room for doubt. Shohei's explanation in Japanese clearly and concisely shows that Shohei has nothing to do with gambling and that Ippei was telling a huge lie to everyone around him at the beginning.

Just about all translators never really translate 100% correctly I’m fluently in Spanish and English and I heard Spanish translators they never translate correctly sometimes they have to throw words and mixed up specially when they translating nothing controversial.

He said もちろん quite a bit, and I think rather than the usual "of course," the translator used "obviously." It's subtle, but I don't think he took anything of substance away from what Ohtani said. He conveyed what was said, at one point clarified with him to ensure he fully understood what was being said, and didn't extrapolate or add meaning (a much more common and worse mistake translators make imo)

Whether he likes him or not is subjective. But nothing he said was off base and makes total sense. * Did he bet on baseball? That's the illegal activity, so you need to get him on the record for that. * Were his account hacked? If so, did the police get involved? If the police didn't get involved, then things are sketchy. * If his account(s) weren't hacked, then the question is a very obvious one: how did an interpreter have access to his account? * How did neither Ohtani nor his financial advisor not notice millions of dollars leaving his account. Sure, aI get it, he has a $700 million contract. but he doesn't get all $700 million on day one and I think his contract is back loaded. If the guy can't speak english how do you expect him to read and write in English? Obviously he was his best friend, he was with him all the time, probably had to help him read and write, shop for groceries and other online shopping. Got access to his bank account, and stole his money.

This interpreter needed to correctly translate Ohtani's words. The interpreter said, "Up until a couple of days ago, I didn't know what was happening." But Ohtani said, "I didn't know what Ippei had done, such as gambling or depth, until a couple of days ago." I believe the Interpreter should have clearly translated to avoid further confusion. I have seen people who are at a certain level of status give their assistant access to their banking account to make payments for expenses on their behalf, even without power of attorney. Because of the "trust". I believe Ippei went beyond.

It's not hard to believe at all because it's how most financial fraud is perpetrated. The person making payments forwards falsified account information (bank/brokerage statements). Unless you access your records personally or speak to a bank rep, you never know funds are missing until you try to withdraw them.

This is the problem when oversight/audit is not separate from the person conducting the activity. Very common financial fraud. DO NOT entrust all of your finances to one person. No matter how much you trust the person, regular monitoring and checks are critical.

I could not even open an account if I lived in Japan and had to open a bank account and deal with all bank activities in other languages. I could not even check account information in Japanese. People who tried to blame him, could not imagine how hard it could be to live in another country. I understand he had to leave all to Ippei or other Shohei team members. Agree 100%! I'm an executive Operations Accountant (Controller) even with all the access I have, there are still others above me that I must answer to, who verify my receipts and entries. Anyone with this much money has several accountants, CPA's Brokers, investors and financial advisors WATCHING every penny! Daily transactions are closely looked at and a reconciliation is done at the end of every month! The minute this story broke, I said the exact same thing and I stand by it with my 30 years of expert accounting, auditing and banking experience... THERE ARE MORE INVOLVED in this entire scandal, watch and see. This is bigger than just the interpreter and until all charges are filed upon all investigations, speculation is all you have, HOWEVER there is no way a bookie gives or allows $4.5 million to rack up from a guy that only makes $300k a year and there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY $500k transfers can be made without Ohtani, CPA and financial advisers having knowledge - with funds that high, there are multiple approvals and a paper trail a mile long! It'll all come out!

Despite this huge scandal, he is happily chatting with his former teammates at the stadium and playing with ease. It seems as if there are no political conflicts, wars, or discrimination around him. And that's what I originally had.

In his statements what he said is that he didn't know about the transfers TO THE BOOKIE nor did he know of the gambling debt. If you don’t know Japanese people in the culture, they are very very trusting people especially with other Japanese so I can understand why he would be deceived by his translator. My wife also is a translator from Japan and she has information of all the people that she works with that come from Japan over the USshe helps enroll their children into school. She helps pay their bills so she has all their financial information. Like I said it’s hard to believe but they don’t think like we do the western culture very trusting and very pure people.

Only people who doesn’t know about Ohtani think he was guilty.

I think there is a lot more to this. Best friends don't steal from each other. Plus, Ohtani's name was on all the transfers. Either the translator hacked his account or Ohtani knew about it.

I find it interesting that everyone is ready to give the guy the benefit of the doubt but don't do the same for American players, especially black players in the past

I can imagine that it's difficult for the Americans who do not know Ohtani's history and upbringing in Japan, including how he was even at the Angels to believe fully what Ohtani explained is believable and truth. But as a Japanese who have followed him in Japan and as he moved to MLB, I can attest that what he said is 100% believable. Ohtani since he was a young boy was very focused with specific goals set and worked diligently on the path to achieving them. His parents and especially his mother was instrumental in providing the support he needed so that he can focus 100% on his tasks (the baseball). This is why if you are a baseball fan in Japan, and this is a very well known story in Japan, everyone knows that Ohtani's mother took 100% control of his money (income and expenses) and the set up was simple for Ohtani in that she gave him monthly allowance of very little money. Ohtani used team dormitory and team meals 100% to focus on baseball. This is how he lived in Japan as a NPB player era. Ohtani is known to be frugal and does not spend money like normal pro athletes do. He is not interested in fashion, clothing, shoes, cars, basically not interested in tangible material stuff. Again, this is very well known in Japan about him. Ippei Mizuhara was smart in that he put himself in the position with Ohtani to take care of all of his personal duties out side of baseball so that Ohtani can just focus on baseball as he did in Japan. The identical set up that he had with his mother. Ippei was a perfect man for it and Ohtani trusted him 100%. So in this context, it is very plausible and most likely the case that Ippei had this role (similar to the role Ohtani's mother had in Japan) for Ohtani since he became MLB player. Ippei is not just a translator for Ohtani. Ippei was essentially Ohtani's personal caretaker, personal assistant, consultant, butler, driver, shopper who took care of all Ohtani's needs to live in USA. He therefore had access to Ohtani's bank accounts and was probably helping him on setting up the payables, bills for his expenses etc etc. Don't forget, Ohtani has no experience managing his own money in the past, he is also oblivious to all the living expenses especially in the USA. Ippei was the perfect friend and paid worker for him to do these tasks. In this set up, Ippei can easily transfer Ohtani's money, even 4.5 million without Ohtani knowing (again, Ohtani has been very naive, trusting and indifferent about money matters, except that he knows that he has been getting 50 to 75 million per year on endorsement and baseball contracts even in the past years, so 4.5 million may not be so significant in this light and could not be noticeable if he was trusting Ippei to manage). Agent is there to deal with the baseball contracts and he is not Japanese so he would not have known his personal contents. This is why Ippei is said to have been paid upwards of $400,000 per year to work for Ohtani, where as a regular personal translator working 9 to 5 is paid $150,000ish for a pro-athlete. So you guys take a rest on speculating and jumping to conclusion about Ohtani in this situation. Eventually the investigation will shed a better light on what I am talking about.

Smart people get scammed all the time. He just is too busy and he designates everything to others. If he is guilty of one thing, it is being naive and trusting.

I believe the first story. He was helping his friend. Ohtani knew but didnt know it was illegal until his lawyers told him it was illegal to know.

Gambling isn't technically legal in California, but it's still really easy to gamble. You can still use an offshore book like Bovada. Idk why you'd feel the need to go to some bookmaker.

Shohei is only interested in baseball but not in money. When he was in Japan, his parents managed his money, and he didn't know how much he had in his bank account. In the U.S., Ippei was taking care of Shohei like a baby. Ohtani is not interested in money, and that's why he gave up his high income in Japan and went to the States to play baseball at a higher level. Besides, his English is not good enough to understand anything complicated, although he can handle simple daily

People have suggested Ippei was entrusted with certain Ohtani accounts such as charitable donations. It’s very bad of shohei to not do business practices such as AP reconciliation but it’s very possible shohei just didn’t care much for these accounts entrusted to Ippei as the caretaker.

One of the most irritating things about the "noise" surrounding this scandal is witnessing people's inability to see beyond their own myopic experiences to answer questions they raise along with a condemning eyebrow. 1:31 "Either Ohtani is not telling the truth or has the worst: best friend, interpreter, accountant, manager, agent, bank in history." According to the current narrative, let's say he got the first part about the best friend/interpreter right (albeit hyperbolically). Put yourself in all their shoes. You're Shohei's accountant. Maybe you have a functionally bilingual interpreter in your employ that communicates directly with Shohei. When you notice questionable activity occurring in his account, do you ask this bilingual assistant of yours to contact Shohei directly with specific instructions that Ippei not be present? Not unless you suspected his trusty sidekick of something. You likely leave a message for Shohei to contact you ... which he does, alongside Ippei to help prevents things lost in translation from slipping between the cracks. Let's say you're his manager. What the f*ck would you know about any of this? And if he was privy to such things, that'd be a red flag. What about his agent? Same damn thing. What about his bank? Unless the money was being wired to "Illegal bookie guy," what would they do? [See Shohei's accountant above.] Now put yourself in Shohei's shoes. Picture yourself in a foreign country where you don't speak the language. Put yourself in the meetings he's had to attend, including the initial ones with his bank and his financial team. Picture every single publication given to you then and those that are regularly mailed to you over a series of years to be in that foreign language. Do you try to read everything or ask someone who'd know if it were important? Picture yourself wanting to wire money for the first time... in this foreign country... through this foreign banking system... through an app in that foreign language. Do you trust yourself (and Google translate) with your first attempt at a big money transfer? Maybe you impose upon that financial institution of yours and you have them put on their Japanese interpreter. What about the 2nd time when you're unsure and perhaps embarrassed about having to have someone walk you through it again. What do you do? Well, if you have a trusty "best friend/interpreter," you could always ask them "hey, am I doing this right?" And if said "best friend/interpreter" is the worst in history, voila, he has knowledge of how to access the bank account... w/o having to be some gifted hacker. If you've ever spent time in a foreign country where EVERYTHING was new, the language, the culture, the technical procedures, oh, and your tax status, how would you handle day-to-day things and major calls from folks speaking this foreign language? Who would trust or rely on? Well, if you're "fortunate" enough to have someone who spoke the language, knew the culture, had been living in that country for decades, AND was your boy, well...

Isnt $950 + of stolen money a felony? And he's not even charged for an alleged + $4 million! So then No filed charges so no crime or investigation!? But also no possible self incrimination either too??

I worked in the Treasury department at an international investment firm. I sent massive wires.. sometimes over $300M each. Believe me, other people knew. You don't send that kind of money without lots of people knowing, employer and Bank

For those of you who don’t know anything about Ohtani, he’s been donating a lot (millions of dollars) for earthquake victims in Japan, donated for 100 Japanese kids’ study abroad program in the US, donated millions to send baseball gloves throughout elementary schools. All he does is sleep 12 hours or more, train for baseball, he doesn’t go out to drink with buddies (this is a known story from WBC teammates) etc. people trying to say that he’s a gambler is such a loser and don’t know why you want him to be guilty so badly

hope they gave him better interpreter and hope that othani can open a bank account on his own without an interpreter! how can somebody answer a question if he knows nothing about it???

people don’t get how Ohtani is generous human being. As I understand Japanese language, the way he talk and the way he conduct himself is beyond excellence. Shohei is a kind of the guy that he dedicates so much into baseball that he doesn’t care about the money, his bank account and even gambling. Baseball is the hardest sports that you have to dedicate so much, thinking about, and live it. I understand that because I also experienced it when I almost drafted by MLB. In order to produce the outcome that Shohei has been putting over the course of his career. He has to eliminate distraction and focus on one thing That is baseball. He was born to play baseball. So I hate all media, and whoever saying he is lies. You don’t know how dedicate one thing not achieving anything. What a sad life your living. Only missable people talk.

There were some relevant questions which weren’t addressed number one of which is has a criminal complaint been filed? No? Why not? It’s ludicrous to take his statement at face value. It’s a transparent lie.

Because instead of a press conference you’d have his legal team filing a criminal complaint and if the bank allowed a third party to make illicit transfers from his an account a major lawsuit to recover his funds plus damages to his reputation. None of that is happening because his actions can’t stand the scrutiny. Look I know Ohtani isn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer but since you’re only paying him $2 million a year as part of tax scam contract if he was robbed he’d be proactive about recovering it. He isn’t so he’s lying

So, obviously these guys didn’t listen to the press release.

The only and real victim is Ohtani in all of this, it's sad but alot of wealthy people get robbed from their employer's clients and workers, it happens all the time. Especially when a person is desperate and is in debt from grambling like Ippei, will betray his friendship and steal money (I know my own brother was addicted to grambling and would steal from my wallet and then from our parents bank account by forging their signature)

Its incredibly hard to believe he knew nothing.Give him a polygraph and he will fail miserably.

Might not be a state crime to make a bet, but if there were bets made by phone or money transfers, there are potential federal crimes. Remember, Mike Vick didn't go to prison for dog fighting (that wasn't a criminal offense in Virginia); he went down for the federal crime of transporting animal fighting devices across state lines.

How do we expect a foreign national like Shohei to know? In any case, he said he had absolutely no knowledge, nor did he ever make any payments for Ippei. This looks like much ado about nothing. You played just a snippet of the conference to align with your guess of what transpired. Shohei's statement explained the changing stories from Ippei the con-artist. Time will tell. Kind of ballsy if Shohei is lying to have his lawyers file charges of thief. That in itself would be a crime.

I have to agree with Rob here. So many things have to be true to not have some doubts that Ohtani had no clue. First, this is not only his interpreter but a best friend and you don’t know that your best friend has a gambling problem? If you know that information alone you wouldnt trust him anywhere near your bank information. Thats like leaving candy on the counter and telling your child not to eat any. Second, even if he some how hacked your account that’s multiple withdrawals of not 20 bucks more like 500k. My bank calls me to confirm 300 dollar home depot purchases imagine 500k transfers. Third, many of these guys have financial account who monitor this stuff wouldn’t they have red flagged it? Fourth, he is married for heavens. My wife asks me about buying a bag chips let alone 500k. So his wife said nothing? I hope he is telling the truth. Im mean he would t be the first celebrity to lose a bunch money being led astray. I mean many rich people lost their shirt to Bernie Madoff so even wealthy people are not always watching everything. I guess you must be blessed if you make so much money that a 500k transfer doesn’t concern you.

I don't know if pro sports did a deep dive SWOT analysis of gambling and bringing it into the bosom of North American sports, but the risks are there. I wonder if they just figure the Millennials and Gen Z will accept some impropriety and keep gambling and thus watching.
