Most of the time I was sailing the southern ocean in my Chatham 33', steel, cutter it was cold and overcast, and of course, the wind and seas so it was nice to have a pilothouse to keep me out of the weather and a bullet proof windvane (Sailomat) for steering. It allowed me to spend very little time on deck. I also used mostly just a poled out staysail or if the wind let up a little, I'd unfurled some jib. It was an awesome sailing challenge especially since I was singlehanded and had no long range communication equipment. I didn't see any other boats during the passage from Saldana, S. Africa to Tonga until I was north of New Zealand.
