The gravel bike is a terrible choice. When your significant other finds out that its good on the road, good off road, takes mudguards in winter... you'll never be able to justify a second (fifth?) bike.

One factor not mentioned: which one allows you to spend less time around cars? Gravel thus wins the fight hands-down. MTBs don't count cause the increased safety of no cars is offset by the 100% guarantee you'll be replacing both collarbones in the first year.

Yes, my sister lost yet another cycling friend last week, the car drivers excuse, he was driving so fast on a single track country lane because he was late to pick up his kids. I had a car overtake me on a blind corner yesterday super fast and yes another car appeared in the opposite direction, luckily I’d already hit the brakes so the idiot didn’t hit me as he swerved to avoid the other car. Had a woman in a big SUV cut the corner at a junction and come at me on the wrong side of the road, in Cambridge last week, I E-stopped, she stopped in front of me on my side of the road, bibbing her horn and f’n and blinding at me! Roads are so lethal these days, so many angry aggressive idiot drivers who have no interest in the safety of others, especially cyclists.

Having a road bike and a (fully equipped) gravel bike, I find that I ride much more on the gravel bike. I use the gravel for daily commute in every weather condition, for going onto tours over several days with attached bags and even do some grocery shopping. Also, I do not have to care about the road condition. If there's a path, it can go there. Gravel bikes are the perfect compromise and they are basically good for everything. The road bike is for nice rides in dry conditions, going on fine roads only. It still is quicker, it feels more agile and on good roads it is more fun. If you are a daily commuter, choose the gravel, if you want to ride on Sundays in nice weather, go for the road bike. If you like both, well, yeah, you could get a second pair of wheels for your gravel bike, but let's be honest. You want more bikes, you should get more bikes.

I got into cycling by buying a gravel bike with a road drivetrain. It is like an SUV of bikes. I am glad that you finally used that comparison in your video. What's even more useful it that you don't even have to buy an additional wheelset. I switch between road tyres for longer summer trips and wider tyres for riding in mud/sand/snow in winter. So for me a more "road plus"-ish gravel bike is a sweetspot. Not everybody realies that a gravel bike is a very wide spectrum of bikes so anybody can choose something for themseves. Again just like SUVs. There are more road oriented models but also some terrain oriented ones.

And now that I'm in the sport I'm beginning to see the point of having a dedicated road bike, but for going to college, have fun at each ride, by going through some strange place normaly forbidden to road bike, I'll definitely recommend a gravel bike to any beginner, which has absolutely no idea exactly what he want to do with it's bike or what surface it will encounter. My last point is the following, look the bike of your friends. As a Swiss, most people have MTB so to be able to follow my friend in some muddy place the holy gravel bike was and still is the better option. (But still waiting to buy a road bike :) )

I think the video at 10:00 of the two riders side by side, the road bike is coasting and the gravel bike rider is peddling, tells a lot about the rolling efficiency of the tires and possibly the aero but they are not going fast enough to make the aero a big deal I believe. Personally, I ride a gravel bike because I do not have the flexibility to ride a true road bike at 72 years of age. Also, the gravel bike does not have the gearing that the road bike has so the top speed, if I were able to reach it, on the road bike is mechanically higher than the gravel. Again, I would be on a road bike if I could but the gravel, and I will be moving to narrower tires in the near future if I could ride it comfortably but I do like my gravel bike. Just my personal issue and solution. Be safe.

I'm riding gravel bikes for three years now and are convinced these bikes can almost do it all when you have two or, in my case, three different wheel sets. With pure road tires it works great on the road and I'm not slower than on my road bike. With mud tires I can keep up with mountainbikes most of the time and I have lots of fun with 650B wheels with WTB Byway tires that are suited for light terrain as well as for the road. Only for a time trial I use my tt bike. Very happy with my choice for a gravel bike. As a comment on this video; would like to see what the differences are when the gravel bike has 700c wheels with the same road tires in it as the road bike.

Bought a Cannondale Caad13 last year. It's clearance is wide enough for a 40mm tire, more than enough for most gravel action. But it's aero, well equipped and handles great on all surfaces. You need 2 sets of tires, or better yet wheels and you're in business. I agree that you're better off to get the geometry of road bike over gravel, and 1x is just rubbish on the road. And on the gravel too come to think about it.

Alex nailed it at 5:30. Gravel bikes are awesome "entry bikes" if you'e not sure which way you want to go. I was a rather casual bike rider but wanted to ride more and have more fun. Got myself a gravel bike 5 years ago (not too expensive), realized quickly what it's strength and weaknesses are on different types of terrain, and then 3 years ago added a road bike to the collection. Nowadays I use the two bikes regularly, depending on where and how far I want to go. I still refer to the gravel bike as my "fun bike", because it's so much fun to ride it (and passed like 100 other cyclists including lots of ebikes on it today. Gravel bikes are not slow. Maybe it's you, but certainly not the bike)

Cool video and top subject ! I went for a gravel bike... It's more versatile and I ride with my mates who are all on road bike, I can keep up, no problem. Just upgraded it with a group 105 and I have tubeless tires... More comfort and less hassle. Let's be honest, I'm not Alaphilippe... I will never be and don't intend to work to that level anyway... So for me, my performance on a road bike or gravel will be roughly the same... And the weight I can gain... Is mainly on my body ! :-( So, if I take part in a competition, I have another set of wheels, with smooth tires and it does the job perfectly! Don't hesitate! Go for gravel !

Just bought the Topstone 1 from Canondale in XL as there was no L available anywhere. We'll see how it fits... In this day and age it kind of is hard to find the bike that you need, instead you are looking for the bike that you get. Still with that specs it seems to be very well equipped to take on the road way faster than my almost 20 year old KogaMiyata Roadie... So I am really looking forward to getting it. Also honestly, the Gravelbike is just the best compromise.

It depends on what kind of riding you like to do. I live in a rainy area and ride a bicycle pretty much everywhere I go, and prefer a gravel bike fitted with road tires for almost all of my riding. It's comfortable, which is important when you're older, but still reasonably fast and fun. More importantly, most gravel bikes have mounts for fenders and racks, and most road bikes don't. If you're riding for reasons other than pure speed, it's nice to be able to stay dry and carry stuff.

IMO, suspension is as important as tire clearance. You can also go with an endurance bike that can fit gravel tires - Specialized Roubaix is what I have, but the Trek Domane can accomodate a slightly wider width. The benefit of an endurance bike is you get a little more snappiness like a road bike. The downside is you don't have flared handlebar drops that provide some nice stability off trail downhill. It would be great to have some handlebars where you can adjust the flare of the drops.

In eastern Idaho we have two seasons. Winter and Road Construction. While we do have brilliantly plumage charming road cyclists, unless you are very careful with your route, any cyclist will be in less than ideal road conditions eventually or on Zwift. A gravel bike is the minimum to be functional on the often gravel and junk covered right side of the road. Most locals pedal mountain bikes.

I’ve found my gravel bike to be quite versatile, taking it on group road rides as well as taking it out to the wooded trails. The tires are more suited to road but have enough tread to go off road, that is, not too knobby at all. I’ve pondered building a road bike but have found myself building another gravel bike on an old Gary Fisher mountain bike frame. It’ll be strictly off road build. As much as I like road bikes, I’m not competitive and I don’t race so the gravel bike is likely where I’ll stay. Plus they look wicked as hell!

I was surprised that you did not mentioned it, but it would seem to me that within an urban area, where roads can be in poor condition, e.g. potholed, the gravel bike would also make for a good commuter bike too. This makes it for an even better entry level, multi purpose bicycle weekday bike. With time, as you decide what type of riding that you like to do, then you can go ahead and buy a dedicated road, or, mountain bike to use for your preferred riding style/sporting and training use. You can keep the gravel bike for commuting and leisurely riding use. This will also help to spread the wear and tear on your equipment and improve their overall longevity.

The only thing that makes me hesitant between the two is the condition of the roads in my city and the biking infrastructure (sometimes got to go on the sidewalk). I'm guessing gravel'd be better at taking the potholes, keeping control and have an easier time going on/off sidewalks. I don't know how common punctures from impacts are (riding hybrid now), but it could be a factor is road bikes are very susceptible to those upon impact. In the end, I think I'll go road, since my current hybrid kind of substitutes the gravel's functions. But the appeal of not getting worried by surfaces kind of obstacles does make me reconsider.

I bought a gravelbike here in Thailand (not easy to get) and had to change the tires within two weeks. The roads are mixed where we drive, partly good surface, partly gravel... that's why I decided for a gravelbike. Besides that, my bicycle buddy uses a mountainbike and it is hard to keep up with me for most of the time, so a pure roadbike is out of the question. The new tires I put on the bike are Schwalbe Marathon Plus (700c-38 mm). I'm happy with it.

I just bought a new gravel bike this spring. In the area where I live, in Northern Ontario, Canada, there are just about as many or more gravel roads as paved. Most rides I do involve having to ride along gravel at some point because there are only two paved road options that I can ride right from my house, and the one road is a very busy highway that I usually avoid. One short ride around the area here could include some gravel sections, paved sections, and even some rough trail sections, so I need a gravel bike to be able to ride all of the roads where I live. I had a mountain bike for many years, but it was too slow on the paved sections.

I live in London, which informs a lack of space for storing multiple bikes, a lot of traffic, and some horrible road surfaces. As it turned out, the cheapest bike that fit my specifications was a gravel bike. I like that it's more sturdy and the higher head position for cycling in London over a pure road bike. I like that it can handle a bit of off roading, so I don't have to worry too much about where the sat nav thinks I should be going. I did a Box Hill run with some new cyclist friends on various much more expensive road bikes, was able to keep in touch on the climbs, and was fastest downhill. Although those might have more to do with me being 20kg heavier than the next heaviest person, and the extra load I had on the bike (on call, so laptop had to come with), as well as a larger wheel diameter overall compared against the road bikes (700c wheels and a higher profile tyre with minimal tread). I think that for most riders the differences in speed and weight can be nullified by a lighter breakfast, and a big dump before riding. Certainly as an only bike, the gravel bike is fantastic.

I had a decision to make last summer and I went for a gravel bike and this year I’ve bought some nice wheels that I can swap in if I want to a ride that is 100% on tarmac. It depends on what your local environment is like. For me, a lot of the best routes involve crossing a mile of treacherous loose stuff but there’s miles of empty country lanes; to get to the same roads via road would involve doing many miles on busy roads which isn’t my idea of fun. Gravel is definitely the answer for me but get a map out and look at your local environment to help work out which is the best for you

I just reduced the bike quiver from three to one. Sold my full suspension xc mtb, my crit racing bike, and by old gravel monster. The bike I purchased to replace all three is a cyclocross bike. The reason for that purchase was simple: the cx bike weighs as little as my crit bike and takes up to 42mm tires but doesn't go too far down the rabbit hole of gravel bikes with 3 to 4 more mounting points and lazy steering. Gravel bike compromise too much in the way of performance ie. with weighing too much or lazy geometry. Just my thoughts...

It's also the geometry and comfort factor. You see these older, larger gentlemen trying to ride a full carbon aero road bike and they just look ridiculous and they can't pick up speed because they're unfit and can't adopt an aero position anyway. They'd be much better suited to a relaxed geometry gravel bike with some 32mm+ road tyres.
