One thing I love about road trips is watching the scenery change before your eyes. We live in a beautiful country with such diverse landscape. Flying can't do it justice.

John Stone, the way I handle problems with others is I don't take them along. I always go alone, then share it all when I return home. I even did that back in '84 when I drove solo to Alaska from northern Illinois, returning through Jasper, Banff and Glacier--9244 miles in 31 days. What a wonderful month!!!

Suggestion.... Did a road trip with 2 adults and 4 teenagers from Montreal, Qc to Cocoa Beach, Fl! It was fantastic!! Ok so we did have a big, tricked out Econoline with integrated dvd player, etc. But the only rule i had was everytime we stop we take out anything we need to throw out. This way the truck stayed clean the whole way! My favorite way to travel is a road trip!

Great video Mark! I love your videos and you inspired me to travel abroad. I have been to London and Paris last year. I went to Amsterdam just last month and of course I saw you 5 things to love and hate about Amsterdam before going. A road trip definitely looks like something I need to put on my bucket list. Thanks for your hard work! Happy 4th of July to you and yours. :)

TIPS: Bring a portable garbage bag for your car to put trash in (empty it regularly), and a cooler with ice and ice packs to store healthy food and drinks in. Bring reusable water bottles too. You can fill those at rest stops. Bring bonine and plastic bags for car sickness.

well said. Took my sons on a couple road trips when they were pre-teens. one to Georgia to see my brother and one to Philadelphia to see my cousins..We had a cooler that we packed, and had picnics. We visited Mom & Pop places and tried to find those kitchy things like 'biggest ball of twine'. Paid for a bus tour/hotel thing in Niagra Falls Canada..and the tour guide mentioned to us a great little Mom & Pop diner. The best breakfast I had had in 20 yr. As for the "are we there yet?" moments. When I was a kid, I always asked for a map to look at and follow..and doled out a treat when we got to a certain city or mile marker.

I remember playing the license plate game as a kid, as well as my younger brother always being asleep, and me looking out the window all the time. I was totally fascinated by the passing scenery. I know--weird kid! I was a kid before Ronald McDonald was born, so we, honestly, never ate junk food on trips, and I don't eat it watching TV or at movies today. All you need to experience this is to be old like me. Totally agree with Love #2. If you return to eastern Canada, try driving around the Gaspe Peninsula of Quebec, plus Nova Scotia. Beautiful!

You brought back some memories about road trips from when I was younger. We made the trip to my grandparents/aunts place 1400 miles away from where we lived. Back then (1970s) we did not have any of the things you suggest to bring for kids like tablets and mini-game consoles. We had a backseat full of books, crayons, colorbooks, small toys and other things. We did not have to use a seatbelt like they have to now and the seat laid down so me and my sis had some room to stretch out in. We did though, look out the windows all the time with the ever changing scenes around us. Mom packed us food to eat on the road for the first day. I can remeber eating egg salad sandwiches for breakfast!!! We did not have the money for fast food and the only messes in the car were from our toys and melted crayons. So when it was my turn to do road trips with my kids, we still did not have the electronics but we did have a CD player so I brought our favorite music and also books on CD to listen to. I did not have a DVD player because they were expensive and (my kids took a road trip or two with their dad and step family members and they had the DVD player because the step siblings could not stand to be in the car long) so the kids would look out the window for hours. As for "are we there yet?" I quickly nipped that in the bud so to speak when I told them to do that with their dad. So they would ask me where we were instead. I would stop at grocery stores and get things there vs fast food.

Great video as always! If you ever get a chance, you should take your family out to western South Dakota, (I'm from the eastern part) and go see all that the Black Hills have to offer. I can vividly remember 6 years ago as a 6th grader nearly having our backs against the wall going from the White Mtns in AZ taking a backway in NM back home to Tucson. First, we were having engine knocking issues in our '93 Sub, then a cop was hunting us down for speeding but thankfully he pulled back to the shoulder and we were never stopped, then on top of the that the fuel gauge was pegged at the E and I could only imagine what running dry in the middle of the desert in JUNE would be like. 😨 We made it just fine thank goodness, but overall fantastic video woltersworld !

I notice you didn't stop in Boston on your trip. Too bad. There is so much history in this city. You could have also, taken a drive down to Plymouth to see Plymouth Plantation and Plymouth Rock. From there you could have gone down the Cape or as people not from New England call it, Cape Cod. After the Cape, how about a visit to Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket? You missed a lot.

Hello, Mark. Firstly, happy fourth of July. Did you ever end up getting to Iceland? I just got back after being there for a week and it was amazing. It's great how many day trips you can take from the capital to other areas of the island, each being different, but awesome in their own way with all the different types of landscapes. A question for you, kind of a broad one. What do you think the future will being for travel? Is it something that is going to get increasingly more difficult and expensive in terms of areas of the world being off limits and airline tickets getting more and more pricey? Do you think there will be a revolution of sorts making international travel much easier for everyone, with possibly new methods or means of travel? Will the type of vacations continue to change? Over the past ten years or so we've seen things like hostels and Air BNB growing rapidly, previously off limits areas of thew world opening up for tourist revenue, and the idea of a vacation not being as straight froward as it used to be, with more active and exotic things to do. I'm curious to hear what you think traveling will be like ten years or so from now. As always, great videos.

Americans can probably figure out a cross country trip accross the USA. But how about a good itinerary for cross country Canada. I don't see one good video of this. I asked some Canadians and they mostly say there are going to be many boring long country/forest lengths. I've drove cross-country in the U.S. many times, and have many hours of driving in Mexico, but I have only crossed in to Canada, I hate their customs officers! But I'd like to do a cross-country drive there, but I don't see much info on that. I can only think about go during the warm months, and stop at the bigger cities.
