    The spare key is a HUGE one. I was on a road trip by myself, found myself on the middle of a trail in Moab Utah when I stepped out of my car to take a picture. The wind closed the car door behind me and had me locked out of my car. Had no cell reception, no one else was in sight. Took me about 30 minutes to remember I had zip tied a spare key to the undercarriage of my car. Key was under there for over two years before I needed it, but man, what a freaking lifesaver.

    i’ve never locked my keys in a vehicle but it sounds like a nightmare if that would happen somewhere with no service 😭 my dad sometimes freaks me out when it comes to keys, one time we drive from baltimore to key west florida and when we would swim he would just tie our only key to the van onto his string on his swim shorts.

    Almost everyone over-packs for a trip. Then they complain about having to pay for the extra baggage,for air travel for example. You need to include things that have multiple uses, or just leave them home. Most things you really need can be washed, bought somewhere on-the-way, or easily replenished as needed. My baggage consists of a medium duffel, and a messenger bag, and the only single-use item is the fire extinguisher..

  • @GeminiDiscover

    @@toml.8210 it's harder to overpack on a roadtrip when you have a whole car at your disposal for storage, lol. But minimal packing is best if it works for you.

    The problem of packing trailmix and nuts is that they are high in calories, sugar and fat... and you spend most of your time sitting in a car. It is a healthier alternative to make real stops and enjoy salads, veggie sandwiches, fruits for example Another important tip is to follow posted speed limits when you drive through small towns: local police loves nothing more than gouging out-of-towners with ridiculous tickets.

  • @GeminiDiscover

    @GeminiDiscover

    3 жыл бұрын

    That's a fair point about trailmix. However, we like having it with us because it doesn't go bad and is a great (and relatively healthy) food backup in case there aren't places to stop and get food. This actually happened to us in Monument Valley, where we ate trailmix because nothing else was open. Also good point about not speeding in smaller towns.

    Most of these I agree with. I love roadtripping and I haven’t done as much lately because I don’t have a spare tire yet. My car came with what is essentially a fix a flat system instead. 😂 I think my one issue with the items listed is the personal safe. Just keep things out of sight. You’d be amazed how many hiding spots are in your car. I was able to stash a snack size Pringles can in my car beside a bin that doesn’t look like it would be removable. Cash stash!

    Great video. I always include spare wiper blades because wipers always break when you need them as well as a tarp to be able to lay down on the ground and check under the car if required. I also include one of those Gardiner kneepads so that I can kneel next to a wheel if I have to change the tire. Finally, I always carry a fire extinguisher and a first-aid kit bigger than what you get in there Emergency Kirk it.

    These are some good tips, I like that you mention car maintenance. I have AAA which has paid for itself many times over. I also drive a Volkswagen that has less common bolts and screws (torx and triple squares), so I always carry a spare set of tools for my car. I may be old school, but I carry a Mapsco and a compass, as I generally know which direction civilization is, and GPS aren't always reliable. I also load up my cooler with stuff to make sandwiches or things like hot dogs that can be cooked at a park or campsite with a grill. If you can boil water, your cooking options while traveling really expand. We freeze our drinks before we leave, and as they melt, they keep the cooler cold. Baby wipes are also great for freshening up, especially when traveling in hot areas. I really want to head to the mountains for a few days to recharge, but this pandemic and lack of very sanitary bathrooms on the road gives me serious anxiety. Thank you again for the tips.

    I used to do auto claims. A chipped Windshield tip. Wipe off the chipped area of the windshield with a DRY rag or paper towel to remove surface dust. Then cover the chipped area with Transparent tape - like Scotch tape or packing tape. It will in most cases prevent it from cracking further. I do practice what I preach as I had 2 rock chip areas covered with Scotch tape for 2 years that never split AND I went through the car wash many times. Remember: Dry windshield as it is moisture within the chip that invites cracking, wipe dust off, adhere tape.

    Hi Nat,in addition to this great advice on the video,also buy gas whenever you can and try to keep a full tank.Many places close early or have closed for COVID.Ive had no gas from Jackson hole until throughout Yellow stone ,until gardener Montana.Be prepared to be amazed with the northern.lights if your lucky,sometimes you only see it for a few moments.You also will see thousands of stars.If your camping,keep your garbage covered multiple times and safe and away from Bears..Also you may be paying reasonable rates for hotels and than see it rise double if it becomes HIGH season when vacations start.Years past I couldn't get a room for many miles all booked up and very high.Can happen in winter to,in the Caribbean I had to overnight pay double for my room in St.Thoma s because it became Dec.15th.Same room twice the not so nice price.Alao learn to check-in at Noon time enjoy the pool eat at the restaurant watch tv sand get some rest and sleep and a hot shower,you will be recharge and can take on a 600 mile trip,if you drive late at night n try to get a hotel they may be closed or you get the worst noisy room and have to check out early,always ask for a late check out.Also check for Priceline express deals or hot wire hot rates really good no hassle prices.If you ever get stuck always pull off to the right of the road as possible to avoid getting hit by a distracted driver.have roadside red triangles and or flares.Get bug spray.In the summer there are now incredible wearable fans that can last for hours.A.Also if you eat oranges or lemon slices if you are exhausted and need to drive they can keep you alert even more than coffee.Also if you see booklets on rest area lobbies that have hotel coupons they are great. They can save you money and have exit maps and can tell you where you can buy gas.Also always get a free State map at rest areas.Learn the speed limits,some states use airplanes,they usually have a big white line sideways at intervals to clock you.Always eat local when travelling,your making memories,you will never look back and say Hey remember when we had Whoppers in Montana?A great 30 second sleeping tent is called the Privacy Pop you can get it with mosquito screens. Also if it rains a Under the weather Pod is awesome. If you river raft Take zip loc bags..Take lots of pics and one day you will have lot of great stories.Montana is real big and ,as with most western states the closer to the Rockies the more scenic.Happy Travels.

    And don't forget to bring your Glock for when traveling. Just be sure to follow state law regarding carrying in your car or keeping locked up depending on the state you are in at the time. Better to have it and not need than need and not have.

    I think you packed everything but what you needed. I think you missed some very important things, such as a jump starter, tire inflation pump, and a common sense one is a jack. I would would add rainx for rain and and for interior fogging of windows but those aren't a must. But I hope you do have safe travels and enjoy your time during these covid crazy times we're living in.

    "The Ranger was acting police officer" Actually in the National Park Service, they are Federal Law Enforcement Officers, with the same training and background and authority as any police officer in a city. No acting about it. Plus going over the speed limit is breaking the law, 5 or 50 miles over.

    I have just gotten back from a roadtrip which I cancelled after driving 250 miles to find the Cincinnati Ohio river bridge on I 75 was closed due to a gas tanker overturning on it. yeah, might want to bring your own road on your road trip:) So I drove 250 more miles to go back home, find out I had forgotten to lock my doors (because I thought I was going back into the house again but didn't)..AND in the shuffle, my neighbor's cat was inside my house with no food, no water and no way to get out, he'd have slowly died a very painful death from no food and no water, and in the process have made lots of urine and feces in my house. I did have a litter box which he used but after days on end, he'd not want to use a box that was full of his waste..plus I'm sure he'd have had a nervous breakdown. I was almost as shocked at seeing the cat inside my house as I was finding my doors un-locked..this is the #1 most idiotic thing I ever did, yes, ever..in my whole 58 years. The cat is very stealthy, that part is not my fault but I should have done a final walk thru. Lesson learned: Maybe arrange for friends or family to visit your empty home to make sure everything is o.k...or have digital cameras inside which you have access to on your smart phone.
