I'll keep my bike low profile, low power and slow. It already gets me where I want to in far better times with far less effort and I can tackle routes and terrains I used to push or carry the bike on my shoulders. I can still put it on my shoulders or pedal it with the pack flat. I modded the controllers to be more legal than most off the shelf bikes. On road I actually peaks at 250W and 25km/h. Off the beaten path, 1350w are about enough. Not digging trenches on the mountain paths, not throwing dirt at others faces. ~100km with a 100kg AUW (me, bike, luggage/cargo) getting 21km/h averages. But, most importantly, I'm free. Free from taxes even if EVs are exempt (for now!) free from the hassle and bureaucracy. Long time ago I was considering buying a tiny (500kg) local car and convert it. Quitted the thought when I understood the legal hassle. But I do want to see you getting your plates! I want to see more bikes, ebikes, other efficient EVs and less cars on the roads.

Fantastic Andy !! I can’t wait for your how to follow up video, I also have a great mid drive bike ( 1000w - 48v -20ah) which I bought a couple of years ago without genuinely knowing anything about all the rules and regulations. I ran the bike for a year or so every weekend trying to get some fitness back as I’m over 65 and really enjoyed it until I was sadly informed by a bike shop of the current e-bike law . My bike has been stuck in the garage for the past year without turning a wheel and I have gone to the extent of adding proper wing mirrors turn signals and brake lights in hope that some day someone would come along and explain the procedures to get me back on the road again ! I did try a 250w bike as a demo and could not believe how pathetic the performance was . I’m 6ft 2 - 15 stone old rugby guy . Apologies for the long winded email, however I’m sure you understand my frustration.. Thanks again for such wonderful videos....

The speed limit is 16mph or 15.5mph 250w, but 350w is permitted in use with a quick boost. As long as you're pedalling, and no going stupid fast - like over 20mph, you should be fine.

One of the best ways to help decarbonize society is to relax ebike laws and get ICE vehicles off the roads. People will save a fortune and also get fitter. This is how you know if the government are serious about tackling the climate emergency. Naturally, the fossil fuel industry doesn't approve and won't go down without a fight, so they will lobby hard against it. They cannot be allowed to win.

  • @danieltabrizian

I get where you come from, but imagine this: They relax the laws and require you to for example only send in fotos of the bike you are trying to get road certified. Some crackhead will one day make a yanky ass brake system and get it road certified. Few months go by and this guy hits a pedestrian, not only landing himself but also someone else in hospital. The ambulance was called and tried its best to get to them asap burning allot of fuel in the process. After getting them to the hospital the amount of electricty packinging logistics involved in caring for them both will massivly offset the impact the ebike had on carbon emissions by long shot

The last bike I had, a Rocky Mountain Hammer, you weren't going to get much above 50 km/h...but with a properly sized road bike, the years of strength training resulted in some fun. Some of the bikes I've seen are eye opening performance wise, although learning how much turns my eyes towards a proper electric Motorcycle. After the GROM, that is.

Brilliant Andy... I know you are well into the e-science and speed thing, hence your view on the 250-watt which comes across as negative, which in my mind, are in fact fantastic assistance motors for a pushbike.. not a replacement of. My Bafang 250 does just that.. it allows me to ride even without power as a normal bike because it is still very light, plus assist me up those steeper hills or against the wind... I, like others, apart from an age thing may have other medical problems, in my case, I cannot put pressure on the chest, but this extra E-power acts as my disablement buggy (but on two wheels) allowing me the freedom to roam again... So love all e-bike classes...Horses for courses! The 250-500 watt range is fantastic for my group of rider and their needs being assistance for normal pushbike commuters... The jelly legged people., plus allow a bit of light off-roading too. Yes, boring for other e-groups who wish to turn their cycle's into E-motorbikes, say above the 500-watt range with bigger batties making them to heavy to ride as a cycle or just impractical, which is where I feel the limit before a 'motorbike' classification ends and starts. hence love what you are doing, and the info!

Yeah I do agree with you, 250W ebikes can be ok, it’s not so much the power output I’ve got an issue with because in a geared drivetrain a 250W motor can be very useful as you are finding out, it’s mainly the 15.5mph limit where the motor cuts out, most people can pedal way faster...even if it was raised to 25mph it would make these ebikes a whole lot more useful for commuting. What you find is most 250W ebike riders chip their ebikes to unlock the top speed anyway. This mostly goes unnoticed.

@@andykirby Thks for a reply Andy, I found the drag after the limit is reached an issue on the commercial bikes. a right pain in the Aspidextruse But on the Bafang mid-motor, the limiter is in the settings and can easily be altered, and Yes again, I can peddle faster on the downs and flats, that is true, in these cases I turn the assist to 0 and just peddle as a normal bike... No problems!

Test cost £85, you also need to apply for a VIN number, if you could get VIN numbers put on your frames then that would save a bit of time. Other than that all e marked lights, a good stand, reflectors on the pedals. There’s a 250 page manual on the subject if you want a bit of bedtime reading 😅

The problem with the rules is they are limiting the wrong thing. You could just have a law that says it is legal to do X speed at X location. As in say 15.5mph on a public footpath or cyclepath but 30mph on the road but only when driven on the road not on an adjacent path. If they did this ALL cyclists would actually ride more slowly on paths and they'd be safer on the road.

Yeah things need to change. The speed restriction here in the states is so confusing. In CT they are restricted to 750w and 19mph. Anything faster and you have to get it tested to be road legal but other than lights, mirrors, signals, and a 30mph speed cap they don't tell you much else on the dot website.

The mot is pretty straightforward and all new imported vehicles or manufactured vehicles must have an certificate of worthiness the manufacturer usually does this and that's why new vehicles are exempt...in short you don't even need an power source to pass an mot you could literally be engine less so long as your brakes shock absorbing systems and lighting all operate within the regulations with the only engine test being exhaust emissions for petrol or diesel engines...I have had hundreds of mot's passed being an mechanic and it's really the construction and use act to which an self manufactured vehicle is exposed too during the test. .

My electric bike (that I had back in 2007) done 22mph on the flat and that was 250 watt motor. Shame it had 2 SLA batteries running at 24 volts. Not lithium batteries back then. Everyone in the house used it. Kids as well. But I did check with the police in between ordering and waiting for delivery and the police were stumped at first because as you say Andy. There is guidance up to 250 watt rating but limited to 15mph. I told the police the bike could do up to 22 mph but they said ‘if it’s on a cycle track, were not bothered’. There were plenty of cycle tracks where I used to live. I only brought the bike to go to and from work as it was local to me. Result. The police said they have more important things to do than nick someone on an electric bike. My daughter did get stopped on it once (on a cycle track) and when the copper asked what cc engine it was, she said ‘it’s electric’ and the copper said ‘oh shit. Ok off you go’. Ha ha We clocked up 600 miles on it before it had a slight accident and the frame got bent.

Well see this is the thing back then they where so few and so people and police had no clue, however now people are well aware of high power bikes heck I had an old guy stop me as I was parking it up at a shop asking about it and saying it looks like one of them 1000w motors and the guy must have been in his 80s, the police are not so blind to them also anymore due to the select few fools that zip through traffic and on paths at 40mph, however even the police do not seem to know the laws and I have been stopped by police twice in the last 6 months while going to work, the first cop was more interested in the bike and I was honest and told him it was restricted to 250w and 15.5mph to comply with the EPAC law and he called it in and everyone was fine and I was sent on my way, the second cop however clocked me doing 25 down a hill and under the law that is perfectly fine however he was like ebikes must not go faster than 15.5mph and I was like no that is incorrect and I told him that under the EPAC law the electric motor must only assist up to a speed of 15.5mph but that a ebike that complies with the EPAC is basically a bicycle that does not have a max speed limit other than the one imposed by the road you are on so long as it is your legs or gravity that propel you you can go as fast as you like, 20 min later I was still there and he was threatening to confiscate the bike, eventually I had him call in to check and the other person was like no he is correct and you shoulda seen the cops face he was not happy lol. But any way its what eventually made me swap back to the proper 250w motor as the large 1000w motors do stand out and ere becoming magnets to police and public.
