Riverdale Mega Homes • The Bronx, NY • 8/20/2023

When people think of The Bronx, they probably don’t imagine Tudor mansions, neo-colonial estates and castles up on hills with tree lined streets. The borough is known for its rougher and grittier areas, but truth be told there are some really nice neighborhoods up their too. Riverdale probably being the nicest and most affluent. This impressive area is situated on the Hudson River, on the extreme west side of the borough and the very northwest tip of NYC itself. Route 9A aka Henry Hudson Parkway cuts through it and on the west side of that parkway you have a bunch of very old homes mostly surrounded by hedges, walls and fences for privacy, so they’re not easily viewed. I was surprised how bad some of the super narrow streets were there. Tons of potholes! Maybe to discourage people passing through? I know it annoyed me a great deal haha! They'd be better off just being gravel roads. Still the neighborhood was really nice architecturally and quite historic. Plus, the Metro-North train station was there also.
On the east side of Route 9A, the tour really begins because you can see all the beautiful houses much better and wow, what a great collection! Especially in the Fieldston Historic District section. It was awesome to see some of them looking like castles with towers up on a hill or something out of England. Some others were Colonial, Tudor, Medieval and Mediterranean Revival style houses and a few were very modern. A really nice variety of designs all in one area. I had to drive through slowly for most of it, since it’s another private neighborhood and I didn’t want to risk getting a ticket or even worse, have my wheel booted by parking and walking off. Regardless, the video still shows exactly what you’d see if you were there and captured the feel of the place.
Early in its residential development, Riverdale was a 19th-century estate district where many of Manhattan's moguls built their country estates; for example, in northern Riverdale, what is now Fieldston, was part of the estate of Major Joseph Delafield, who purchased 250 acres in 1829, and named it after his family's estate in England. At the turn of the century, the new popularity of railroad commute enabled wealthy businessmen to make Riverdale their year-round residence. Fieldston, owned by a private association, is a particularly intact example of a turn-of-the-century upper-class suburb. The Hudson Hill neighborhood retains many of its historic mansions. Riverdale's elite private schools and historic churches also reflect this past. Development of the neighborhood began in the latter half of the 19th century once the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad came through. The tracks originally crossed Spuyten Duyvil Creek and into Manhattan on the west side, but Cornelius Vanderbilt wanted to consolidate his railroad operations into one terminal. He had tracks laid along the north side of the Harlem River so that trains coming south from Albany could join with the Harlem and New Haven lines and come into Manhattan down the Park Avenue main line, along modern-day Park Avenue, into his new Grand Central Depot. This is the route still used by the Metro-North Railroads Hudson Line.
Hope you enjoy the tour!

Certain sections just outside the Bronx like Mnt Vernon, Bronxville, Ardsley, white Plains, Van Courtland, and Yonkers have very expensive homes.

Yea, it's surprising, but based on how old the homes are and the history of the area it makes some sense. It definitely isn't what you think of when The Bronx is mentioned!

The South Bronx gets all the headlines, but the North Bronx is the real star of the show! Much of it is clean, quiet, and safe in a way you wouldn't expect from anywhere in NYC, let alone the Bronx.

Another exceptional tour Paul. The historic district was awesome, I agree there are some mansions there that are repeat of old English estates. i have watched all the episodes of the British mystery show "Midsomer Murders" just so I could see all the gorgeous old English villages. A great series too. Can hardly wait for your nest one.

Thanks Lorna! This area is great. I love the Historic District too. Everything is well preserved and very stately. You’d never think you were still in The Bronx. Not far down Route 9A is a bridge that takes you right into upper Manhattan.

The pond is named Indian Pond I grew up in North Riverdale (Skyview On The Hudson) we used to ice skate on the pond & play hockey. Fieldston was almost unreal for us kids from all over the city whose parents made the decision to leave the “hood” so we could grow up someplace different.

I found this video very interesting because it showed the bedrock and different elevation of the the homes built there, as opposed to Manhattan , Queens and Long Island, which are almost flat. The homes were grand turrets and Tudors. Thanks for the tour.

It's one of the reasons I prefer Riverdale over Forest Hills. Both are gorgeous, but Riverdale feels more "upstate-ish" with it's hills and rocky terrains, and mountain like surroundings.

Just curious to know how old are some of these older homes? They sure don't build them like that anymore. And no one landscapes like this either, more or less restoring the natural environment. Lovely. My parents grew up in the Bronx but not in this area regretfully.
