River Surfing the Eisbach in Munich | Made in Europe

For surfers, Europe has always been a destination that offers promise of something more than simply wave riding. The remnants of eras long past often stand right at the water’s edge, defying the ocean’s penchant for constant, radical change. Not surprising, such an environment is always inspiring unique approaches to the act and art of surfing.
Like… river surfing. For the second installment of our Made In Europe Series, Southern California-based filmmaker Matt Payne turns his back to the ocean altogether and heads hundreds of miles inland, to a reliable little wedge in Munich, Germany. Payne catches up with local Quirin Rohleder, who got hooked on surfing as a kid, after discovering the very rippable standing wave of the Eisbach-or “ice brook”.

Munich is really blessed with this part of the river. You can literally surf every single day living in a big city.

Had the Eisbach all to myself during the Oktober Fest back in '82. What a trip!

Watching the action with your own eyes must have been amazing
Coming from Oz, I was blessed to live in Munich for many years. Its amazing place that I love so much . Just a short walk from here you'll see the boys from the Munich Cricket Club in action during the summer months. Best place, best beer.
I'm sure there would be a couple of German engineers that could create more surfing spots in Munich. They just need to get the council on board. Maybe brand these surf spots as cultural enrichment. I heard they are into that sort of stuff.

Where are you from? In Germany everything is regulated and regulated. Being allowed to change the course of a stream is very difficult

I did not know that... looks like Germany will have an Olympic team for Japan as well. *Red Bull,* could you check in on these other countries that don't have access to the ocean, but have surfers that could be part of their respective Olympic teams.

couldn't they make a new wave by dropping large stones into the river?
@Aint1S
8 жыл бұрын
That's what I was thinking, channel that river through half of the available access and pour concrete to build up the ramp in more than one location... one half at a time. A steeper shoulder on one side and lower on the other too really feel like your on one.

@@Aint1S This is Germany, here you are not allowed to change anything on a river without long approvals
now go learn how to paddle and duckdive 10 set waves in a row.
I wonder how think that wetsuit is
