River Smallies Crushing A Plopper

On this adventure, I used the Mach Bait Patroller 90 for the first time. Despite losing some really big fish, I had a blast on the river catching some big smallmouth bass and northern pike.

Amazing footage, good job getting all that on video. Don't sweat losing fish. It's just part of chasing river smallies. Personally I've gone to mono type co-polymer fishing line for all my treble hooked lures, just a bigger margin for error with a more forgiving line. I also find your moderate fast type rods not your fast to ex-fast rods with more flex in the mid part of the rod better for keeping smallies hooked. I also prefer your regular premium (Gamakatsu or Owner ST-36, etc.) round bend type hooks on topwaters, especially the rear treble. Save your short shank, wide gap, and heavy hooks for cranks or largemouth fishing. No need for special hooks that actually work against you with topwaters. I think if you try the combination of mono type line, mod-fast rod, and premium round bend hooks you will land a lot higher percentage of good smallies. Can't believe you only have 389 subscribers, keep putting out great videos and that won't last long. Keep it up.

I would run mono but most of the rivers I fish contain musky and big northern pike so I’m left with a heavier setup. I’ll definitely consider it if I dabble in non toothy rivers. Thanks for watching and for the suggestions!

Great vid! I would replace the hooks. I usually put a red one on front and a single hook on back. Most get the front hook.
