They seem to have substituted the crystal clear water in the river hull for something resembling liquid mud to cover up the shopping trolleys and old mattresses.

Not sure when you've ever seen clear water in the River Hull, not this far down anyway....

It is the most northern chalk stream system in the uk. In the upper reaches its that clear you can clearly see the chalk. All the muddy looking bit is tidal.
