    Went to the calcio 2 years ago, first move of the game as the ball was still in the air from the ref throwing in at the start one fella smacked a fella from the ither team and ko'd him clean! Going back again this year, there's nothing like it, better than any fight Night or football match I was ever at, it's the local passion, the atmosphere is just incredible in an old square in Florence, all the traditional garb they wear, everything about it is just amazing! You can't belive what you're watching, it's like being a spectator at a medieval battle!

    More background info on the whole event would have made this clip more than a vague promo for Florence. Why are there rival districts? Are they differentiated by class? Trades? Origin? What time of year does the event take place? Why? Where do city officials stand on this? How do Could Calcio Storico ever be exported? If so, how? If not, why? Just a few things I’d be curious to see in this type of clip.

  • @KingFuego

    @KingFuego

    The rivalry goes way back in history. Today they just keep the tradition there is no bad blood between them. They are just split in 4 districts because Florence was originally built that way in the past (today there are a lot more but the main ones are these 4). The event takes place in the beginning of June. It goes on for about a week from the first match to the finals. The city officials of course agree to this and actually spectate. I don't know if it can be exported but I am pretty sure there is no copyrights. I'm actually from Florence so I hope I clarified some things for you :)

    And i want to annex another fact. Is very common to see games between districts in the same city here in Italy (run, bow, horses and this sort of things). This comes from our history, from the fact that before the italian State there where dozens of little state-city and inside the city, like now two regions plays football against each other, districts were sport rivals

    I can't believe how many judgmental/narrow minded people are commenting negatively about this. This sport is a celebration of history, tradition, familial honor, bravery, sacrifice, humility. It's brutal and it's violent, but it's beautiful in its own way. If you can't identify with these people and/or respect what they put themselves through, then you are missing out on much of what you as a human have evolved to experience...you're living in a bubble of comfort and self indulgence; you're a wraith, and your life signifies nothing.

    BUONGIORNO! Innanzitutto grazie per questo bel video, molto professionale e chiaro. L'ho usato come materiale didattico in un corso di lingua e cultura italiana per due gruppi di studenti americani e ho sollecitato, come esperimento culturale, le loro reazioni scritte. Sperando di fare cosa gradita, copio le reazioni e i commenti degli studenti: "Ed è per questo che Roma è migliore!" (credo che questo studente fosse in vena di scherzi) "Qualcuno può allenarmi ad essere uno di questi gladiatori per favore?" "Perché indossano parastinchi se poi si colpiscono in faccia tutto il tempo?" Uno studente voleva assolutamente che io partecipassi a una partita di calcio storico ma, da torinese, so di non potere, e me ne rammarico. "Sono molto coraggiosi! È molto difficile per noi provare." (E lo credo bene) "Cosa succede alla mucca cerimoniale?" "Non è troppo lavoro solo per una mucca?" "Sarebbe bello se questo gioco si facesse anche negli USA" "Tutto molto interessante!" "Ammiro moltissimo i giocatori che rischiano la vita per il loro quartiere!" Grazie per il video e per aver letto i commenti dei miei studenti. Da parte mia posso solo presentare questi fenomeni storico-culturali come esempi della nostra ricchezza e varietà. Soprattutto quando non si obbligano animali a combattere o a morire per divertimento. Adulti e consenzienti è sempre, a mio parere, la formula migliore.

    exactly, for a 400lb man but not for this. There are no breaks, played in summer (pretty hot in Italy), in sand plus (more importantly) he is not a fighter. You need fighters or rugby players. Need to be ready to break bones. One of the aims is to injure the opponent so that he leaves the field (no subs, they don't exist in this game). One of them walks out, you have an extra player! There are rules though and some of them now each other...
