MMA with Medieval Armor and Blunt Weapons

Спорт

Every year there is a medieval style combat tournament that takes place in a castle in Europe; that means swords, full body armor, and shields. This past year we followed the American team to the event to get a sense of how intense the competition is. We saw major injuries, the kind of patriotic pride you see in the Olympics, and sparks fly - literally.

    @@aeiou1738 its a common belief that swords were rigid, but they were designed to be massively flexible, to the point they would bend quite far without snapping. Combine that with being tempered and hardened and you have a flexible weapon able to withstand impacts and take minimal damage. As the guy above me said, the metal continues from the actual sword edge all the way through to the pommel, and the metal underneath the grip is known as the tang, which allows the weapon to take more impacts without snapping at the hilt. Take a look at some KZread videos that show how swords were created, just ignore the "Damascus" videos and focus on imitation European medieval swordsmiths

    It’s worth noting that the weapons used in BuHurt are significantly heavier and beefier than real historical swords. While BuHurt does have a lot of historical similarities, it’s definitely a lot more on “smash them silly” side of the spectrum since the goal is to get your opponent on their knees, and not legit kill them with with a dagger through an armor gap. HEMA is more based in historical fighting technique, but focuses mostly in in-armored dueling techniques, kind of like Modern Fencing but with more historically accurate swords.

Obviously, these people are in a controlled environment, but it must be so so hot in that armor, and the talk about starting to breath in your own C02 or having sparks fly into your helmet must be crazy, even in this environment. So can you even imagine what that must be like for a soldiers in the medieval period? With arrows raining down on you and people collapsing from the heat and having to smell ozone because sparks keep going off in your helmet while you are simultaneously trying not to die? That shit must have been completely fucking insane, I cant even imagine how horrifying it must have been to be a real medieval soldier.

    One thing that I believe many people are failing to realize is that these fights are not attempting to emulate actual battles or duels, but they are emulating tournaments. Many people commenting say things about footwork, or the lack of thrusts or halfswording, but the point of a tourney is not to kill the opponent, but to beat the everloving shit out of him/her. So really, this is a good deal more accurate than what many people are making it out to be.

  • @ZeldaBeyond

    @ZeldaBeyond

    2 жыл бұрын

    I think many of the inaccuracies stem from a safety point of view. All of the armor is historically accurate, however, they have mixes from different countries and have made slight tweaks like making the armor thicker so that they do not die. But yes an actual medieval tournament often was like this where they were thrown into the ring and they fought to the death. Using any weapons including their hands that they could find sometimes stealing other weapons. Sometimes horses were used but it was pretty rare. Also most combatants didn’t have full gear as that was reserved for nobles and higher class. It essentially was a more modernized version of the Roman gladiators. This is more based on tournament fighting rather than combat fighting, although many people died in tournaments anyway and that’s why they were banned lol.
