I've recently discovered that there are old species of fruits (like old varieties of apples, plums, etc) that are being reintroduced and brought back to consumers at least in Italy/Europe; I wonder if there might be something similar in USA, that could be a cool episode for fruity fruits! P.s. Have you ever tried mulberry?

She probably has. Mulberry trees are extremely common and grow wild in the US. :)

I grew up in the tropics, and usually, we just handled opening a coconut with a machete and a dog who loved ripping off the husks 😂
Ahhh the memories. Growing up we had a couple coconut trees in the backyard so I grew up eating green coconut. Here (Hawaii) the soft meat was referred to as "spoon meat". I remember my dad scooping out a bunch of meat and blending it up with the coconut water then passing it thru cheesecloth to make coconut milk. He'd always use that to make haupia or add it to squid luau. Thanks for the memories!

I was thinking that the yellow one tasted different because it was just a little bit older. Is this correct? Or do different varieties taste different. I spent a few years in the south pacific Islands and don't think I ever tasted 2 young coconuts that tasted exactly the same. I always put it down to age not variety. But I'm sure you have a lot of varieties in Hawaii, so you may know the answer to this question.
My mother in law still makes her own coconut milk for her curries, like she did growing up in Malaysia. She won’t use canned coconut milk. Fortunately, she has two sons who are willing to help scrape coconuts for the payoff of her homemade curry 😂

Does homemade taste different?
@jahbern
8 ай бұрын
@@MaxOakland yes. It’s very much based on what you are used to - I don’t consume much coconut milk, so it doesn’t really matter to me whether it’s fresh or canned. It’s kind of like Mac and cheese for me, to use the whitest possible analogy. You can tell the difference between Kraft and homemade, but people who have only eaten Kraft don’t know what they don’t know. And some even prefer Kraft because it’s what they are used to 😂
I’ve been watching you longer than I like to admit. Your recipe for congee is still one I use to this day! You seem to not have aged at all! I love your fruity fruit series! (…..and who can forget Winston!) ❤
I love fresh coconut! Even though I’m from Brooklyn, New York, I grew up having these a lot in the neighborhood of Crown Heights. The jelly part is so yummy! And yes the coconut vendors do have forearms of steel, they also use machetes (otherwise known as a cutlass) to cut open the coconuts.

This brings back memories of my childhood growing up in Miami. Coconut trees grew everywhere down there. As a child I would always get a coconut and a hammer and screw driver to pop a hole in it and drink the coconut juice.

Love Fruitty Fruits!! Thank you!!
I find it much easier to open with the heel of the cleaver, because it’s more of a hacking motion, rather than a slicing or chopping motion.
Yay!! Fruity fruits! I love the fruity fruits theme song it's so catchy. I love coconuts but I also love the Coquito nuts. They are super tiny and look and taste like coconut. Really hard to find but when I do I snatch them up they're (like you say) so stinkin cute.😊

Yay, fruity fruits! This was fascinating. It would be cool to see the mature, brown ones, too, and to get a sense of how much liquid is in each type by measuring the difference. But thank you very much for piquing my curiosity about one of my favorite fruits!

There's very little to almost no liquid in the brown ones. The liquid is tasteless at that point. The delicious jelly part turns into the hard oily coconut meat you see in stores as shredded coconut.
@debgeisler4568
Жыл бұрын
@@kareny5438 We used to get the brown ones at the grocery store when I was a kid. My Dad was fond of fresh coconut from his time in the navy, so he’d get cravings. (They showed up rarely in a small town grocery store in Ohio in the 1960s.) He always got the liquid out by hammering a Phillips-head screwdriver into two of the three “dots”…then pour the liquid from one while the other let air in…then crack the nut for the meat. Some of the meat would go into savory dishes (esp. with pork or shrimp), and some would get shredded, mixed by Mom with melted chocolate, and turned into OMG haystack candies. I remember the liquid as more flavorful than the stuff we can buy now in cartons - and which comes out of the green coconuts. It is fine - and great for hydrating - but different from the older liquid..in my memory, anyhow. (Mostly, I’m just curious what the liquid losses and changes are. Science!)

I was afeared for you. Glad it all went mostly smoothly dear Emmy!
One of my favorite treats in southeast Texas was young coconut that had been stored in an ice chest before opening! So good!
My parents have a couple coconut trees. We generally let the fruit fully dry before we open it. They are a bit of a pain to open lol when dry. Generally we buy cut fresh coconuts from the street venders and drink then water using a straw. It’s just so much better than packaged stuff.
Awesome Video emmy

I had fresh coconut as a kid. It tasted nothing like a Mounds bar! Excellent vid, as always, Emmy! 🥥🍫😄✌🏻☘️
It was so interesting to see a young coconut being opened. I had no idea there were different varieties, my experience with coconuts has always been the brown hairy ones that are already out of the fruit. I've never tried coconut water, I'll have to try it one day. Great video :)
I, sadly, cannot eat, let alone drink, coconut, but I’m enjoying watching you hack it. Must be very satisfying 😂❤️

Coconuts are incredible my fav fruit/nut.. Interesting enough the bladder in our bodies holds about 2 cups of liquid. 2 cups is about how much water is in a young coconut. Coconut is clearly gods design of the ultimate Gatorade electrolyte drink!! So So amazing I think!!! And theres so much else you can do with the meat shell etc..

Oh Emmy I wish you could try Thai/dwarf coconut- it has a pandan smell and flavor. Also the tree is short so no need to climb 😂
You need a kitchen band saw. Lol. A bolo and a trusting swing is perfect Philippine coconut opener
One of my earliest memories is of the young men ofthe Philipino national guard climbing the coconut palm in our backyard to get some coconuts down for us. They whacked a cross into one end of the coconut and then used a stake with a large nail in it to pry the shell apart. It seemed like everyone had a machete close to hand as they used them for everything.
Cool! I have only ever had the green ones! I didn't know there were yellow ones!
I am absolutely obsessed with the idea you going off to college with a cleaver lol
