@@rafaelpires4362 Rise of Nations is a master piece IMO, hundreds of hours well invested.

The first set of differences are difficult to judge between because one of them is a woodland map, and the other is a tropical map - the trees are different, and all the grass is different, but they're in both games.

Is it possible to play t&P mods in extended edition ? I want to try out my Napoleonic mod there.

is there any way to have the mini map centralized on the steam version?

I only ply the Extended Edition for the animations, they are a lot more smoother.

There's not really any differences as far as I can tell. All they did in terms of "HD" is smooth out the animations and made them a little prettier. The older version looks better in my opinion

XD even in 720p it's barely any difference. The waves and stuff look pretty, and the textures are prettier. But it is still the same look, while I guess is a good thing, keeps the nostalgia alive XD

OfficialMaiconi For me what they did is to get the game to a more modern resolution. The interface is smaller than before and thats quite a good improvement.. but thats about it! I already bought it but i have to admit i waited until it got a discount.

Dario Camacho Actually. One of the main reaseons I won't buy this game is because I already own the first edition along with the expansion pack. So I don't really see any reason to spend another 25 bucks or so

Dario Camacho Rise of Nations already supported modern resolutions. If you open the config file in notepad, you can put in 1920x1080 and it will scale everything *nearly* perfectly. Theres some minor hiccups with some squares turning slightly rectangular, but most of it comes out really nice.

It's just, beautiful!

For some reason, the new graphics give me eye strain. I'm going back to the old graphics.

I bought the gold edition, loved it. I bought the Extended edition, loved it. I love this game. Its my favourite RTS ever. Rise of Legends is brillaint too BTW.

@@flyingpie1089 but it also has a dlc along with the main game. Extended edition includes that dlc too Gold = original + dlc Extended = gold + improved graphics

You know, I still like the original over the improved ones. Graphics is the only different, while the gameplay stays the same.

I couldn;'t see which was the HD version and then guessed it was teh right one and thought it looked worse...

Nothing in vanilla can beat Azangara's Flora and Fauna mod for Rise of Nations :(

Dave Strider Does it still work with online? On the original one you could play a modified game with friends as long as everyone had the same modified data files. This is critical for me because I like to slow down the tech research speed to make the game longer and more fun.

Yep I was able to modify the population from 200 to 500

its a shame all these games are not made with the graphics seen in War game series that would be truly epic

The only good thing of extended is smooth movements of 3d models and animations. The optimization process cuts off original textures quality. Antialiasing, anisotropic filter, this is a 2d game, don't even requires those. Original still the best!

So which one is extended edition?

The right one

right lads, just an idea but what if they are both the same version of the game, but one is on the lowest settings, and the other on the highest. This may not be the case, but i compared it directly to my copy of extended edition, and it honestly looks ten times better than both of the comparisons.

Here we can see how in Edinburg live better house painters than in Richmond.

I thought the graphical improvement would be better than this, really there is no improvement it looks exactly the same or perhaps worse. I used to play this ages ago and was contemplating buying it since there is a steam sale again. I can't play the old version though since it's on CD/DVD whatever, haven't had a DVD drive in quite a few years.

the one on the left is way better for battle effects.

the original rise of nations was on a 2d/3d model but in Rise of nations extended they maked it fully 3d but in terms of multipayer ill go for the original RON bringback old lobby!!!

difference: extended edition: More Colorful and smooth animations with brighter textures and enhanced shadows normal edition:Less Colorful and choppy/laggy animations with darker textures and good shadows

Hmmm. Then why didn't they name it enhanced edition instead of extended edition? With the current name i was expecting extra nations or longer or additional future time periods. Oh well.

The newer one basicly only remaster the unit movement and almost no Difference

Man, some parts of the new version actually look WORSE than the original. If you go into the text files and up the resolution to 1920x1080, RoN Gold Edition looks beautiful, especially for its age. I'll take my non-Steam edition.

The textures do look sharper in the original version for some odd reason, but I'll take the Extended Edition's massively improved animations over the original's awful choppy ones any day of the week. After all, I can deal with less sharp textures when my units no longer animate as though they fell out of an old-timey stop motion film. Just look at the difference in smoothness during the battle scene at around 0:17 -- it's huge! The water looks much better in the Extended Edition as well, plus it features anti-aliasing which smooths out those nasty jaggies and makes the units and buildings look nicer overall. Something else I noticed aside from all those things is that the colors in the Extended Edition are more vibrant. The original game looks washed out in comparison. The lighting is more realistic in the Extended Edition, too -- it's especially noticeable when you compare the buildings. At this point, however, I'm just nitpicking. ;-)

beractually the graphics of those bombers in the extended edition looks just like garbage and personally the water looks better to me in the original I own a copy of the gold edition anyway so I have all this stuff just in a "less beautiful" game(the bombers do look more realistic and the water does too and I'll admit the grass looks more alive in the remake but I don't know why I prefer the original's grass and graphics)

I think rise of nation must new update, new version, or new remastered games

Kinda sad they didn't just remake the game with new textures and graphics. Owell atleast they made sure it works on modern windows but without any 4k support..

This game is good, but I've always wondered why it's one of the worst sounding games. Low quality, some units stop producing sound sometimes, lack of sound in units (such as farmers), among others.

so, not worth any more than a couple bucks at most. Don't reward companies for money grabs like this.

Ter seems to be only a minor difference except for the water every other stuff in extended edition is the same.microsoft is milking it's master pieces just a cheap money grab I had the vanilla rise of nations then I brought the gold edition but I will stick with gold edition.. They did the same with aoe2 but that was good but this makes no sense I will gladly stick with gold edition for the rest of my life

They just add one 35% orange transparent layer as filter up on the graphics...nothing change with any pixel...just one layer, like in photoshop.

@Saujana Two Original version, I bought the thrones and patriots pack for about £2 brand new on Amazon years ago. And then years later the Steam version. Original one is still the best to me though.

extended edition is far superior. I love the better animations and smoothed out graphics. great game.

Microsoft milking their games. Please dont support this. 20€ for some changed HD textures, thank you! The normal game can look even better btw if you use mods.

even without mods the original looks better in my opinion besides if we own it already what's the point of buying a newer version that only affects graphics

2020 Here ! The Extended Edition looks so unnatural and forced! You expect to play an old game but instead you get a sharper image with high graphics! Older looks better cause new one looks chunky and it doesnt help with immersion!

everything looks better except the nukes. they way overdid it on the white bloom effect.

What a pathetic remaster. Both sides look like garbage.
