Rise Of American-Style Trucks On Aussie Roads

Aussies love a good ute, but American-style monster-sized trucks are gaining popularity, and it may have massive implications on our roads.

AND NO, they are NOT utes. A genuine "ute" (correct name coupe utility) is a direct derivative of a family sedan from the same manufacturer.

Why should owners of previously classed light trucks be penalised when these newer vehicles are just the same if not bigger, heavier, tow more etc and not ordered to pay truck prices.

Parking spots must be smaller in Australia. I guess I can find parking lots here in the US where my massive (yes, I won't argue that they are HUGE vehicles) Ram 2500 is difficult to navigate in, but I've never been forced to park it somewhere it won't fit in the spot.

Just give them their own GVM weight class license like the progression for Car to Truck as these are essentially light trucks and some models even have 5th wheels

They do in the US. The 150/1500s are class 2B (6,601 to 8,500 lbs GVWR). Class 2B is 250/2500 and class 3 is 350/3500.

USA does not make RHD vehicles. These are all expensive local conversions. Cost too much for utilitarian purposes (like on a farm) so they pull big RVs or treated as "Urban Cowboy Dream Machines".

Anything that doesn't fit in an Australian Standard parking space, including a margin (for space between vehicles) should be rego'd and licenced as an oversize vehicle. They are not cars, and a car licence is not sufficient for all the safety and manoeuvrability reasons in the video. A motorbike needs a special licence, do does a truck. These are not cars and should not be treated as cars.

They really should have massive disincentives on these. Double the road Taxes. Taking up more road space Heavier and being more destructive on road surfaces Double the Insurance for easily having the potential to double the carnage on an accident and often abusing the law because they can (going over median strips, not slowing down on speed humps etc).

I drive Trucks and am able to find parking when going to the shop for lunch. The car parking spaces are too small for Australian cars. Make the spaces bigger and normal car drivers will benefit by having reasonable sized car bays to park in.
