RIP Wild Hearts, Will Miss you

Ойындар

I don't often talk about my feelings or thoughts about stuff, but with the obvious end to Wild Hearts, I wanted to reflect on where it began and where it ended up...which isn't in the greatest position either way.
I enjoyed all my time with Wild Hearts, but even if the rumor isn't true, I think I've had my fill of the game anyway.

I was hoping that Wild Heart would improve its performance somehow at least to Wo Long's standard and for Wo Long to improve its netcode to Wild Heart's standard. I liked both games when I played them but the issues are frustrating. I guess the development of either games are isolated from the other, even though the development teams are divisions of Koei Tecmo and uses the same Katana Engine.

Okay, I don't want to defend EA because EA sucks, but in this case it's not really on EA. This game was published by EA under the EA Originals programs. Essentially the way this program works is that a small or indie studio comes to EA, and EA gives them as much money and time as they say they need, and take care of marketting with the promise that all profits will go to EA until the funding has been made back, at which point all profits will go towards the studio. What happened here was more on the dev studio than on EA. They released the game too early, likely missed the break-even by a huge margin, and can't pay EA back. Continuing to take money to fix the game would mean just more they need to pay back, and it's likely the studio determined they just can't pay it back at this point. Do I think EA should support it anyway? Probably? It definitely has the money to, but in this game it's the devs that screwed themselves and screwed EA, rather than EA screwing itself and punishing the devs.

@godqueensadie I'm still blaming EA. The game released Feb. 16, 2023 and the only real problems with the game were performance issues. You can blame EA Originals, but performance is not the downfall of Wild Hearts. Even through the performance issues, a lot of people still played it. Most of them were patched up long before the decision to scrap the game. Timing does not matter since, there would never be a right time. There are too many heavy-hitting titles in Rotation this year and next. For numbers, what do you expect? It's a Monster Hunter game. It's a small community to begin with. It's even smaller in the states compared to overseas. EA just did not care if the game succeeded or not. All they saw were profit. It didn't, so instead of putting money into the game, pushing to really fix it, and actually advertising it, they chose to scrap it and put the money into other games they cared more about.

@@jeslucas2515 im sorry btu at least half of that is mostly wrong, performance issues in a hunter game that for some made it literally unplayable lost it nearly half its player base. half of a relatively small community already. considering it wasnt even able to have 15% of its main "competitors" community play it (going by steam peak players it was 12.3 percent of the peak players for MH rise) and with each update it has been consistently losing players instead of retention and gain, its a hemorageing cost. like cyberpunk 2077 it doesnt matter much when the game takes months to get to what was supposed to be the launch quality. the fact the serves are still running with 6 months of less than 800 concurrent players says a lot. unless ea wants to make a really good anime the games revival inst going to happen and itll need to wait untill it somehow gets wild hearts 2 to try and make a comeback.

It makes them the most money, and they seem to kill studios left and right, when they don't meet up to their greedy standards. @@bopqw1055 I've seen the numbers for Cyberpunk and Wild Hearts on PC respectively. The numbers on PC for Wild Hearts are abysmal, but the numbers on console give it a fair shot. The copies sold for Wild Hearts is not "officially" released by Koei Tecmo, but various sources say the game sold around 200K copies on Steam. In 2022, the game profited $230.5 mil and in 2023, the game profited $584.3 mil. How is that hemorrhaging? Let me rephrase because you're right as far as: if performance-related issues cause players to not play a game, then performance is a reason for a game's downfall. What I'm saying is that performance is not the sole factor for the game's player drop. Most players who play the game agree it's a great game overall. Most of the players who don't play it but want to, are just waiting on a big patch to fix all the issues or for the prices to drop. Wild Hearts was on its way there. The game had WAY too much potential and EA did not give it the attention it deserved. Period. It is criminal to compare a game like Cyberpunk 2077 to Wild Hearts. Cyberpunk 2077 had WAY more hype to it, WAY more players who were interested in it, and it's a cyberpunk genre. It even got an anime despite the game having hella bugs still. Wild Hearts was overshadowed by God of War and Elden Ring, and was a new game altogether with no prior following or prequels. The game never released itself with the purpose of competing against Monster Hunter. Y'all said that. It's its own game that is just heavily influenced by Monster Hunter. Monster Hunter is also a terrible game to compare numbers to. Let alone use it as a reference. It's the biggest title for its genre. Hell, it's of the biggest games in Japan alongside Pokemon. It's even in various animes. Monster Hunter had so many titles to get things right and so many years to amass a following. When Rise came out, they already had most of everything they needed. All it is, is EA wanted profit; the game didn't show numbers, and EA dropped it instead of helping it reach those numbers. I'm telling you, it could have reached those numbers in due time.

I just can't help but imagining a world where this game came out 6 months to a year later with no performance issues. There was no competition to pressure them to release the game when they did in it's current state. Ironically, the only competition they had was themselves because they released Wo Long 2 weeks later. It's so tragic considering the gameplay and combat was electric when the game was at it's best.

MH has never really been known for its strong story and writing but instead the quality of its gameplay and fights along with a beautifuly rich lore and world. All WH would have had to have done was grip that more narrative element and lean into these insane fights and possibly turn their version of elder dragons into these insane complex fights they could have done with the building and Kukuri system but they didn't. The performance issues though just spelled their demise. The game didnt drop that long after MH rise if I remember correctly so they not only had to contend with a competitor but also obviously be seen as the inferior one as they were the new dog with performance issues right off the bat.

Agree with every point, other than the prelaunch ones because I honestly didn't hear about Wild Hearts before we got review codes lol. It is incredibly tragic how Wild Hearts ended up. It had so many interesting ideas that significantly changed up the classic Hunting Game formula. It had such interesting takes on classic weapons with each having a very unique identity. And the map karakuri was so incredibly satisfying because of how much agency and ownership it gave you over the pathing and design of your maps. I wanted to make soooo many videos about WH: the optimized build paths, optimal combos and rotations, mindsets to approach different weapons, build pathing optimization, etc. But ultimately I ran into the same wall everyone else did: my 2080 couldn't run enough frames to make good looking footage for videos. So did all of the speedrunners I talked to during it's pre-launch and launch. The game was incredibly fun and deep, but they couldn't run it well enough for professional looking footage. I wish Wild Hearts could have been a game that ran well. I wish that more people had given it a chance, although I understand many could barely even run the game. I wish that it wasn't ruined by the technical limitations and timeline issues. But ultimately it was. I have never mourned a game with such potential as much as I have Wild Hearts. It would have been an incredible series. Sadboi Saturday a few Drinks Soliloquy over. Thank you for making the video that I couldn't.

As a someone who played monster hunter since MHFU, this game had real potential to be it's own thing with more iterations. Fights against more challenging monsters like Golden Tempest with people who actually knows what to do is so so satisfying, well timed walls/traps/canons/heals means it becomes a fun challenge to work together with your teammates to not waste karakuri blocks. By the end the game performance is somewhat ok most of the time, but when it dips, it dips hard. Wouldn't mind playing a sequel.

This game was made under the EA Original program. Basic summary is that a dev goes to EA with an idea, EA gives them funding and handles marketing with the deal being that EA takes all profits until funding has been paid back, then the devs get everything beyond that. Devs failed, game failed, no money to pay back EA, and continuing to try to fix the game would just mean they owe EA more money.

i think a big thing for me as a avid monster hunter fan and also a thing i think both dauntless and wild hearts miss the mark on is that the monster designs they use dont ever enforce why they are able to do things. in monster hunter one of the reasons monsters work for me is that apart from a lot of elder dragons there is a clear design motive in why a creature can or can not do certain things like having bigger fore limbs for climbing or digging explains their ecology and habitat as in there is always a design reason for why a monster looks the way they do 90% of the time with some outliers, but with wild hearts and also dauntless im just told the monster can produce flames with magic and thats as far as things go. in mosnter hunter seresgios as a exampel has zygodactyl feet this enforces they way that it fights with its expertise being in using its feet as a primary option of attack but it also goes into how it lives and and eats. every part of the monster has a reason for it and also involves both its ecology habitat and even mating and nesting habits. i dont feel any interest in why ragetail has a ball on its tail it does for gameplay reasons and thats about it im not saying thats a bad thing but when i have to compare a game like wilde hearts to monster hunter the one that put a lot of effort and time into design and also the history and ecology of monster into all the designs i cant help but feel like the monsters feel a bit lack luster and uninteresting sure they look cool but when most of youre time is gonna be used on staring at these monsters for hours on end and i cant really tell how or why the monster is able to do certian things out of the blue when nothing about its design explains to me why onyxshard should be able to pull rocks out of the ground like magic at that point i dont feel like i really understand the fundamental backtory of this world or how it really works. same goes for dauntless.

That’s the thing though, Monster Hunter’s designers spent a TON of time figuring out how their monsters were a part of the world. Diablos was given blunt claws because it is a burrowing creature, Rajang’s feet are designed the way they are because it’s not a tree-dwelling species, as opposed to Kechawacha and Bishaten that are, monsters have organs that allow them to use fire breath and whatnot. And so on. It’s all tied to the world, and about as grounded as a game about hunting dragons can be. Wild Hearts doesn’t do that at all. They’re designed to be vaguely plant-based and look cool, and that’s pretty much it. Are they part of the world? How do they fit into the ecosystem? How do they do the things they do? The answers to those questions, of course, are as follows: Yes, they’re environmental pushback against human expansion. The ecosystem fits into them, but we don’t know what that entails either. It’s magic, now shut up and go kill a few of them. That irks the shit out of me, because I’m a sucker for good world building, it helps me immerse myself into a setting.

If you have not played Dauntless recently, the last like 2-3 behemoths have been great in terms of design and combat, but they still feel a bit off. As a Monster hunter fan, and a Dauntless player who has spent a thousand hours there too, Dauntless feels like everything that made MH great just got heavily watered down. The behemoths in Dauntless will often do the same kinds of attacks, and rarely very unique ones. A lot of attacks are AOE attacks with different visuals, like a big swipe, or a slam into the ground that creates a shockwave that can damage you, or maybe it tries doing a sliding attack, like 4 or 5 other behemoths can do. There are so few behemoths that are truly unique, instead most behemoths share the same few moves with some twists. That was the case in Monster hunter too, but we had more in depth monster design behind the moves. And as the series progressed, the monsters sharing the same movesets got more distinct and unique. Like Deviljho for example. In MH3 and 4, he is slow, but very powerful. And he's got lots of big swiping attacks and a stunning attack too. In World though, he really started jumping and rolling around, and use his entire dang body to deal with us as best he could. That made me feel like not only was I facing a glutton, like he was described in older games, I felt I was facing a hungry beast willing to sacrifice any and all dignity to get another mouthful of meat. His savage form will even start using his dragon clouds to hide behind for some surprise attacks, easily carting you the first couple times you meet him. MH tries to surprise you in different ways, while still trying to stay believable. Also, another reason why Dauntless feels so watered down, all enemies are designed for every weapon. What do I mean by that? All of the weakspots are always easily accessible, so that no matter the weapon it is easy to get to the head or another part of the behemoth. Monster hunter has been going down this route a bit too, but the older games had a lot of much more unique monster designs and weakspots. Diablos was really annoying to hunt with hammer unless you knew where to hit it before, since you would always bounce off the head. Instead, you were supposed to hit the stomack. Barroth's weakspot is his arms, so any attacks on the head do relatively little damage. This made different weapons have a lot more weight in older games, while now it matters less. It is great for those who only wants to stick to one particular weapon, but I really liked the feeling of having a kind of "rock, paper, scissors" with the monsters, where sometimes you would destroy the monster due to your main pick, and sometimes you would feel quite outmatched even though you should have been in a rather good spot. IRL we do have our weaknesses and strengths, and that is something that I feel MH should have too, not just try to make every weapon able to do everything (looking at you Rise/Sunbreak)

@@crishughes9152 Eh, it's a sins of the father situations, the player characters are just people doing their day job clearing trade routes, protecting villages, foraging items for clients... Back in the worlds history, yeah, Humans and Wyvernians were pretty horrible, with hyper advanced tech, mistreating the wyverns of the world, to the point that the Elder Dragons, including Fatalis rose up and basically led a revolt against them, with Fatalis using flames hot enough to literally melt ancient hunters to their scales to make them stronger and stronger. Humanity and the Wyvernians survived, barely, but were reduced back to a pre industrial state, salvaging what they can from the ruins of their past greatness, though with a lot of methods of production lost to time and destruction, it's unlikely they'll ever reach such a state again. Such relics of that old civilization are the Dragonator weapons, which have been reproduced, but at much smaller sizes, and with a far more inefficient power supply. It's likely that by the time the first game takes place, any humans or wyvernians who were alive during the Dragon War have since perished, and with them, the desire to enslave the wyverns and elder dragons for their own use.

This highlights another weird issue which is that a lot of these devs obviously and sometimes vocally want to just make their own game like Monster Hunter- Maybe the director has things they wish Capcom would do so they're taking it upon themselves to make a game so they can do those things instead (one of the purest and noblest motives for making games imo) so they got some funding (and fiscal compromises, inevitably) and a team and went for it, or maybe they see the success of MH (especially World) and just think "wow that's profitable"- but they always pick strange things _not_ to rip off that are actually core to MH's charm. Monster designs are certainly one part of that (though not the only one). Dauntless's monsters in a vacuum at least look like animals, but all their abilities are just explained by magic from the ground. Not even in the abstracted logical sense of "Deviljho has dragon breath because it sometimes eats bugs that drink dragon blood" that makes Deviljho feel like this crazy freak of nature _because_ we take it for granted that everything that isn't an elder dragon itself follows straightforward logic in MH, but literally just everything comes directly from cracks in the ground that magic energy comes out of. Toukiden and especially God Eater are way worse. Part of why Generations felt less like Monster Hunter and more like a Monster Hunter ripoff was the prominence of bad designs like Glavenus and Valstrax (which unfortunately seem to now be series mainstays, but at least aren't in the spotlight). Another huge factor is weapon combos and mechanics. The clones and even recent mainline MH entries usually stop at the "hook," at the thing even someone who hasn't even played the game yet to understand its genius thinks is cool: Gunlance pokes stuff then explodes, Hunting Horn lets you slam monsters in the face with a big instrument then rock out to buff your team, Great Sword is a gigantic sword that is so huge you have to build up strength to swing it at full power. None of this captures the nuance of each weapon. An easy example for even somebody without deep experience with the series is that in "hook" concept form, DBs are the fastest weapon, dealing several fast hits per second, making them light and agile; In reality, they are a high-commitment weapon, and apart from their weakest attacks, pressing a button generally locks you into place (or into a particular motion) for longer than an average weapon's attack, and that's still just the surface level of the weapon's mechanics; even putting aside "gimmicks" like gauges and stamina drain, each attack in the moveset has a purpose and has to be executed differently, not by just mashing one button until you do the attack. The aesthetics of the weapon are just aesthetics to get people who haven't played yet to go "whoa, this game's awesome!" and the actual nuance of the weapon is much more thought-out and engaging. The intricate weapon mechanics are why the core MH audience measures their play time in thousands of hours and not tens or hundreds like most games' core audiences, and while plenty of MH clones have _cool_ weapons, I've yet to see one that had _engaging_ weapons like MH. Other things are a world that feels alive and interconnected; Monster behaviour that inspires lore speculation; Armour and weapon mechanics and models that inspire self-expression and pride; and so on. On the last point, I recently finally caved in and double-dipped on Rise+Sunbreak so I could play it on PC; Playing through low rank and high rank was miserable not only because the few weapons I enjoy in Rise I only enjoy with the switch skills unlocked at the start of G rank, but also because with that in mind I just wanted to speed through to G, but the best way to do that is with the guardian gear, which is ugly and has boring skills; but as soon as I made a set of hermitaur armour and the hornetaur lance in G rank and saw my hunter's silhouette as I started a hunt I finally felt excited to play, even though I was just hunting a tetranodon or something. It's actually pretty incredible how much that simple thing affects the experience of MH and Dauntless especially was unappealing to me in that regard (so was high rank World- though this was definitely a strength of GU, which had some of the best-looking armour options and the greatest variety of viable weapons per weapon class in the entire series). Meanwhile apart from a world where each piece feels like it fits in, this is the one thing I think Dark Souls took from the MH formula that it actually did really well.

Something I noticed with my gameplay was that when I was on the wifi still in single player the framerate tanks and when im off the wifi it runs 20 frames smoother. My theory is that the EA data collector is interfering with the engine causing it to stutter that or the EA launcher is lagging the game too much

When they said they would patch performance asap, I was optimistic. Then the first patch came where they said they fixed performance. Spoilers they didn't and it almost never got better. I got a buddy the game and he could never play cause he got motion sick from the shit framerate being all over the place. I played a good while, but lost my shit at the final boss. Beat it, but my issue stems from how long the fight was with all the different forms, and the extra final boss which was some human thing that would fit more in dark souls than a monster hunter type game. And then the endgame was transmog as most games are, but farming for orbs was hella frustrating because you couldn't pick what monster you wanted to fight, it's a CHANCE that you get the required orb for layerwear. And the fact that you need multiple orbs. It wasn't worth it.

One of the things that *really* sold me on Monster Hunter several years before it released on PC was the creative monster design, often using elements from real animals and ecology to create fantastical yet grounded creatures. The monsters of Wild Hearts was just.. rat. But big. Oh, what about a chicken? But big! No, no, I got it! A boar! But... big!

  • @Neoxin2388

Idk man I love me some Monster Hunter but we have like 10 monsters within a species that are just reskins for element's sake. What if we had this same monster you just fought, but now it's blue/white with ice! Or this wyvern, but pink! Let's not act like MH is immune from having low-effort monsters. There's tons of 'em, at least half of the variants.

@@Neoxin2388, absolutely, I agree, variants are definitely low effort for the most part, although I do appreciate them. It's still a way of seeing how the creatures interact with their natural environment. Wild Hearts also had reskins, which puts the roster at 60% animal *but big* and 40% animal *but big* reskin. It was always my biggest issue with the game throughout.

  • @strombo530

    @strombo530

    7 ай бұрын

@@Neoxin2388 Though some of the reskins behaved a little differently. Like the pukei-pukei for example. One would create clouds of poison or shoot them in a stream, whereas the other variation would only shoot a stream of water, and you never found yourself in a "cloud of water" like you would with the poison variation. And the Palamao! One creates a cloud that can put you to sleep and can even spread this cloud or suck them back underneath it, while the original variation didn't do anything like this. Though I will concede that there were also reskins that didn't have different/extra behaviors like these two examples like with the rathalos/rathian/diablos.

  • @Yoshihara72

    @Yoshihara72

    7 ай бұрын

@@Neoxin2388 Disagree on that one. First of all, having reskins in the game doesn't invalidate the excelent design they are initially based on, nor the countless of unique monster designs. Granted, we still have some fairly simple designs that won't blow your mind, such as Jagras or Jyuratodus, but those usually are low rank monsters. As for the subspecies: yes, they usually do take the same model and share a lot of the same moveset, yet most of the time, they add enough stuff to make them different to fight. A fighting a regular Pukei-Pukei just doesn't feel the same than a Coral-Pukei-Pukei. Though I absolutely agree that this is now always the case: I still don't know the actual differences between a normal Rakna Kadaki and a Pyre Rakna-Kadaki, for example. And if you take into account HOW subspecies are implemented into the game, I can't really blame them for that. First of all, making completely new monsters is expensive and time consuming. It's much much cheaper/faster/easier to just take an existing monster and alter it in a way to give it it's own personality. And with the amount of detail and precision the Monster Hunter team works, this is not something you can just ignore. They put A LOT of effort into designing the monsters. But even without considering the developement issues of making only brand new/unique monsters, subspecies usually are only added into the game for MASTER RANK. So they only appear in the latter half of the game, and only if you decide to invest even more than the base game. That means, the amount of subspecies in the game is limited by default. Imo, as long as the number of subspecies in a game isn't too high (compared to regular monsters) and they are unique enough to feel different, I'm totally fine with having them. In fact, some of them I absolutely love and might like even more than the regular variant, such as Stygian Zinogre.

Admittedly, I didn't suffer through any performance issues except for one crash on my PS5 and my only other complaint was having to build in tight windows, but that's really part of the challenge of the fights. I didn't really think much about chasing monsters down since eventually with all the traversal katakuri, it would just be trivial. But I think I knew ultimately that it wouldn't meet everyone's expectations because there wasn't enough to bring people in, performance issues, and unfortunate bad first impressions just because of the building mechanics. A mix of they should've given themselves more time to polish, give demos/play tests/gameplay trailers that are good, and people make inaccurate comparisons to MH. MH has had years to really have their formula down where there's little chance of failure while newer games would struggle to meet the standards set by the series. You need to have a lot to offer from the get go and info for future stuff and more to keep from fast failure. Here's to hoping for Wild Hearts 2 or something by some miracle. In a year with A LOT of very good games, Wild Hearts sits among them for me. I put in around 330 hours in a pretty short time, having stopped playing just after the Alpha Sapscourge release. After the initial slow-motion glitches (for me on PS5) stopped, I rarely had anymore issues playing with the homie on the opposite coast, and the game became a blast to play. I feel like an idiot because I got my first 120 kills with the katana, and I would come to find out it's the most boring weapon in the game. The wagasa, hand cannon, and big sword all were a ton of fun, while the bow, staff and maul were just weapons I hadn't got to yet (while still having a max'd loadout for each because the grinds would earn enough to at least make them). What a fun fucking game. Real shame it didn't have the fixes and lasting support it showed in the first few months (for PC players mostly, idk the xbox experiences). Is it being taken offline? I should go fight the newest amaterasu before it's too late XD

It was honestly pretty close to being an actually interesting Monster Hunter ripoff but it feels like they kinda just skimped on the most important part which is the monster themselves. Almost all the monsters feel so slapdash and made without deeper though to accentuating the base animal’s form and way it could fight like they just threw stuff into a randomizer and went without it spat out first. Thing about the Monster Hunter games is the monsters are often really well thought out in terms of their looks and what you might expect them to do. Like a Nargacuga looks like a sleek bat-tiger thing and it fights exactly like you think it would. In Wild Hearts you just get a weird big rodent with a club tail plant thing going on and I just don’t think the brute force nature of a club tail really fits a rat. They could have done something sleeker and more crafty and clever since rats are surprisingly smart. Maybe give it the capability to lay down traps of its own or pull off more fake-out moves.

That being said, the game tried a lot of cool new things, and it was arguably more fun than MonHun when the game actually felt like working. It also determined your damage type (slashing, impact, piercing) by the individual weapon rather than the weapon class which is something I've been telling people MonHun should add for well over 10 years.

Good concept, the crafting killed it for me. The aspect of learning the monster and learning your weapons being dwarfed by creating random structures to remove or bypass mechanics was a terrible decision to me. The monsters also played like MMO bosses rather than living creatures that made the environment their own weapon. You walked into their turf, you have to play by their rules, and being infected/altered was awesome because those abilities were strengthened. The fact you could trivialize it killed my hype.

I loved this game so much, I wanted it to be successful so maybe it could spark the flourish of the "Monster Hunter Like" games for the future. I put those graphics Settings to minimum to get consistent 30fps at least, and boy, I give it 300+ hours of my life, analysing the Pros and Cons and how this new competitor could enrich the formula of hunting games alongside Monster Hunter (my favorite game ever). Sadly, the performance issues were never well addressed and so the game developed infamy, and the 70$ US also didn't help, the EA red flag was there, but I hoped anyway. If the Hunting game genre (MH like) could have the same push as the Souls Like genre, I would play them all with a happy face.

I was one of the people who never got a chance to actually enjoy the game. I was really looking forward to it too because the only games I ever get invested enough into are monster hunter games and I had been looking for another game like the series to come out. Upon release after attempting to play it, framerate and stutters were so terrible, even after making many adjustments in the settings, most of my playtime was me waiting for the game to unfreeze or having to relaunch after a crash. How some people could play it still baffles me because of people I know that had no issues, many had even worst specs than my own pc such as what you mentioned in the video. I have a Ryzen 7 3700x and a RTX 3090 Ti. NVME drives and 16gb ram. Game was mostly unplayable for me so I refunded it in case the performance issues were never fixed and wanted to wait. Shame this is how it ended because I really did want to eventually give it a try again but now I know I definitely won't.

I'm with ya. I loved Wild Hearts, and it killed me seeing the game die off. Since the maps, building, and gameplay loop are a ton of fun. Hopefully next time KoeiTecmo will self-publish, instead of ever teaming up with EA again. So they're not forced into releasing, when the product still needs a little more time in the oven.

I didn’t even pick up the game though I was immediately interested and wanted it to succeed. I love the MH style of games but alas I am a fashion hunter. The reason I didn’t decide to purchase the game was the lack of focus of the promotional media on armor sets and building in that regard. I saw very like about it and that’s my favorite part of MH. Creating weapons and armors out of the monsters you slay that mimic their characteristics.

And the thought of building something while dodging attacks and AoEs, hoping my construct won't get destroyed in the process just doesn't soound like a fun concept to me.

This was my favorite game from these devs. I played a couple of their dynasty warriors games that have Nintendo skins, and I found those between mid and a snoozefest. The botw one felt the best, and the Three Houses one I genuinely couldn’t finish because I just couldn’t stomach fighting all these uninspired soliders.

I was hyped as hell for wild hearts, I pre-ordered it for myself and one of my friends. I was more than majorly disappointed by the quality of the game on release. My pc isn't anything amazing, its probably on the modern lower-end side of things, but it was able to run most games that come out to this day at a little under 60 fps slightly unstable. Wild Hearts is the exception. The only way I could get the game to run at a reasonably stable 25-30 fps was playing in a horrendous 4:3 480p on lowest possible settings, still I pressed on. After having to do the tutorial like 5 or so times, I enjoyed most of the gameplay, the monster zone movement issue was definitely a frustration, but I could look past it. I played somewhere around 30 or so hours into the game, I hit my limit when I learned the most recent monster I fought was the last unique monster, with everything else in base game prior to any updates that were to show up were going to be literally just color reskins. I kept on for about 3 weeks, first 2 "performance" patches dropped, not even a frame difference for me. On the third week, the update was a new "reskin" monster. That was my nail. The game was almost unplayable even on my friend's higher end pc, and mine was only playable out of sheer willpower. The frustrations hit their peak when I patiently waited for the updates that never came with what was promised. And when I learned the only new monsters I was going to fight was pig but ice and monkey D. Monster but blue, I was done. I respect the grind, and I have loved the bones, but the meat never came in the time I allotted the game.

WH had a lot of good idea. I liked the weapons, the monsters, the building and the story wasn't bad. I liked being able to personalize the maps and moving around like we could. The performance issues were there, and played some roll in the games downside. I did not like how the maps were needlessly maze like and looked like they were put together by an armature. Areas over lapping, muddy textures, "paths" being unclear, and the overall flow of how maps worked just wasn't there. A lot of the monsters were fun to fight but it seemed like just a few got highlighted in the story and the others you only would end up fighting a few times. And lastly the guessing game of how to unlock katakuri was just a pain. I think it would be better to have them presets you could quick build after learning it rather than a full build setup everytime. There are like you said a lot of good solid bones in Wild Hearts as a game but I needs a better game engine, clearly ideas of a story and game flow, and overall better marketing.

My 2 cents about thisd game was always, it is good but performace brings it down a lot and the building system would be better if it was just the complete builds and you had to choose which ones to bring and the ones you will leave out. That will bring more strategy to the game and reward smart proactive play instead of reactive play.
