I wish the guy had spoken less and there has been subtitles to what the priestess was saying. The ritual was beautiful and it's a shame it couldn't be fully appreciated by non Greek speakers such as myself. As ever though, well done Greece for a lovely ceremony.

Well it wasn't that surprising since he is the undisputed champion in the Rings. Probably why he was chosen to be the first torch carrier as well.

You are in need of lesson in Greek geography. Mount Olympus situated to the North of Greece (in the region Thessaly) is the traditional residence of the Greek Gods such as Zeus and Poseidon. Olympia which is a sanctuary is located in the south of Greece (in the region o Peloponnese) and is the place where the Olympic games were held every four years since 776 before the modern era. There are temples of the gods at Ancient Olympia (there is modern Olympia also) such as the one for Zeus, Hera etc. Woman were guarding the ancient temples in the ancient times and this is why woman light the Olympic torch to this day.

The reason Olympic can continue is because a different county hold it every-time, just one country won't be able to afford doing it every 2 years, especially not Greece which is struggling financially

basically the money aspect is covered because we already have the olympic property built. maintenance is cheap in comparison of the money it took to build them. plus our heavy industry is tourism. every 4 years if we had the olympics we would be able to recover financially... I have done a thorough study about that...

A very lovely piece of playacting.

It didn't like the fact that the translation (when there was one) during the speeches and especially during that beautiful, highly lyrical greek poem about the Olympics wasn't very accurate and a sometimes there were lines that were being said in Greek, but not translated. Other than that I enjoyed it. But as another commented, I enjoyed it more because I'm a Greek speaker and could understand what was being said.

It will need money. And the ruin doesn't have much left, so it's difficult as the may not know how it looked like exactly. But maybe in the future when there is more money or better technology they can rebuild or the temples

That's literally why it's called a pagan cult. It is not mainstream, the number of worshippers is low, and the predominance is regional in nature rather than multiregional or transnational. Before the 1950's, tibetan Buddhism was a cult. When the Chinese invaded, Tibetan Diaspora brought it to other regions and thus made it one of the leading forms of Buddhism. The term Cult, as it is actually defined, does not carry negative connotations. Christianity, for example, too was a Judaistic cult. But with time it spread and became dominant.

Just wish the commentator would shut up!! You don’t have to run through everything - let us enjoy the beauty without your grating voice
