As the viewer numbers release about the full Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power series are released and show that the numbers decreased every single week, why are the media so obsessed with trying to convince themselves that it's a huge hit? Why can't they just be happy that they enjoyed it, instead we have to try and convince everyone else it is too. But with Jennifer Salke saying Rings of Power reflects the heartbeat of Amazon, and they can't even compete with House of the Dragon when you take relative budgets into account, this doesn't seem to be a good sign. Is that why the cast decided to attack the fans again? While talking about how it's so important that they HAVE to be in works of Tolkien? Seems like cope to me. But what are your thoughts? Let me know down below and as always, thanks for watching :)

Severely underrated comment. This isn't just (or even mainly) a "personal" fault of the team behind RoP, but it's a symptom of the malpractice of the entertainment industry that has become the norm ever since. One can see even the Hobbit started to fall ill to some of it. RoP isn't about Tolkien, it's using Tolkien to tell its story with a bit of cheap fan service thrown in... But we can see through it all. LotR had its faults but it also set the bar (pretty high) for everything else to come after - this means everything else can only be made better, otherwise it won't pass through scrutiny unscathed. Peter Jackson himself couldn't. RoP certainly wouldn't, from the get go

Further comparisons: J R R Tolkien: Tolkien could read by the age of four and could write fluently soon afterwards. When J. R. R. Tolkien was 12, his mother died of acute diabetes at the young age of thirty-four. In his early teens he invented a language called Naffari. Tolkien began studying at Exeter College, Oxford. He initially read classics but changed his course in 1913 to English language and literature, graduating in 1915 with first-class honours. Tolkien served in World War one and was invalided home in 1916. In 1920, he took up a post as reader in English language at the University of Leeds, becoming the youngest member of the academic staff there. In 1925 he obtained the post of Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon. In 1945 obtained the post of Merton Professor of English Language and Literature until his retirement. The lord of the rings book sales are estimated to be approximately 2.2 billion. J D Payne & Patrick McKay The two are originally from McLean, Virginia, where they met on their high school debate team, and directed a short play that J. D. wrote for their school's festival. Payne attended Yale University and studied English Literature, graduating with honors. McKay attended Stonehill College and studied Theater Arts, and the American University, where he received an MFA in Creative Writing.

"It was born out of love and passion," says Jennifer Salke. You know who didn't need to tell me that? Peter Jackson and his cast and crew for The Lord of the Rings. You see it in the high-quality production and how they used every trick in the book to create movie magic. You see it in the attention to detail. You see it in all the work that went into giving this story a suitably epic scale. You see it in the performances. You see it in their dedication (even if not perfect) to the source material. When I look at this show, I see lackluster production (like inconsistent lighting, printed armor, or armor that looks unfinished like that ceremonial armor in episode 1). I see embarrassingly small scales of action and setting for the most expensive show ever made. I see performances that are generally bad or unremarkable (with a few exceptions like Durin IV's actor). I see no dedication to the canon, and the number and severity of divergences are on another level even from Jackson's Hobbit films, despite having less material to work with for the Second Age. And I see writers that are terrible at storytelling, plot development, characterization, cause and effect (including without relying upon contrivances), setup and payoff, worldbuilding, dialogue, consistency across multiple fronts, keeping timelines straight and sensible, spatial awareness (in terms of being clear on where things are located, how far apart they are, and how long it takes to traverse distances), pacing, and so on. Where is the love?

@@timonsolus Despite the myth that provides the etymological root of the word, only one subtype of narcissist actually loves themselves and thinks of themselves as superior to others. Those are grandiose narcissists. Most of these cultural Marxist vandals (like Salke) fall under are the "vulnerable" subset of narcissism. Their superiority complex is actually just a neurotic defense mechanism they use to conceal true feelings of inferiority. In other words, their superiority complex is a mask for their inferiority complex. Their arrogance is thus fake, and motivated almost entirely by their envious hatred of people to whom they feel inferior. Vulnerable narcissism is a typical trait of extreme leftists. The most common personality disorder that accompanies vulnerable narcissism is histrionic personality disorder, which is characterized by hyper-emotional and melodramatic behavior, hypersexual behavior, a delusional lack of self-doubt, an inability to delay gratification, extreme tolerance to the abnormal, and highly exploitative behavior. It's common for people with this disorder to wear flamboyant clothing, dye their hair, modify their bodies in different ways, and come up with fake medical conditions in an attempt to draw other's attention. I unironically love the hobbit trilogy though, they had to make it as long as it was by the studio, and so the team was forced to add more details and flesh out events, but the kicker is they were all logical additions like actually showing Gandalf's mission away from the Dwarves or the conflict between Legolas and Thranduil and where his mother was or how come Thranduil seems so petty for the Elven jewels, or the best aspect to me which is the fleshed out relationships between Bilbo and the Dwarves. The movies tried to improve on the source material, they changed practically nothing they just added more to try and strengthen it and of course make it longer to fit the given goal. And no political messages as far as the eye can see, just the base wholesome moral questions and characters you can love, the only downside being in execution that the legolas scenes took way too much time and cgi was used more recklessly. And that cause of the longer runtime and less deaths cause the hobbit was children oriented meant that the main characters are pretty plot armored sometimes until the battle where most are supposed to die. I would gladly rewatch and praise the hobbit movies again and again.

The shrinking viewers is based on “minutes watched” data reported by Nielsen. That number reveals a lot more than just the raw number. If the minutes viewed goes down from week 3-4 for example, this means that either lots of existing viewers stopped watching, or there were no new viewers. If a new viewer starts watching in week 4, then they will watch first 3 episodes to catch up. That’s why shows like Squid Game and GoT had such long legs and were on the Nielsen charts long after the season finales - word of mouth creates new viewers who then binge all the episodes in a short period of time and bump up the “minutes watched” data.

But my teacher told me I couldnt read it because it was .05 points above my "accelerated reading level" (some stupid program my school took great pride in) Apparently the way to make a child love reading is to tell them that they aren't allowed to read what interests them, instead to read something totally different. To this day I hate reading. Throughout school I was forced to read boring crap that I had no interest in. Finally in senior year we were told to read the Fellowship of the ring book. It was amazing. & also my orchestra ended up playing the LOTR soundtrack at our last concert senior year. I got to play the violin solo for "shortcut to mushroom" & "The breaking of the fellowship". It was one of the most memorable moments of my life. I played the music by heart because I had it memorized from years of watching the PJ films. It was perfect. I think back on that memory fondly.

Big difference I noticed in the articles I was presented about RoP and HoD, is that most HoD articles I've seen were giving context based on the books, formulating/presenting theories or showing possible different iterations of the scenes we were about to see (Based on the book where different versions of the story are presented). Same thing with the few interviews of producers and co, they mostly explained choice based on what was written. All the actor interviews I've seen we're talking about their work, their cast members, reacting to the last episode by giving some context on for example improvised scenes. At no point are they pretending to make history, change the world or whatever: they're artisans presenting their craft. All the RoP articles I've seen were focussed on glorifying the show or the actors and emphasizing how good the show is. And when it wasnt good, it was trying to give excuses for the show, saying its going to be good (And that all season long, leaving me wondering where the good was supposed to be) The actors in their interviews were focussed on how they were making history (Morfydd Clark talking about her audition, as if she was the chosen of a prophecy to save the world was hilarious) and, as Disparu says, on themselves mainly. Rop is that person who boasts how good they are at something, tries to do it, fails and blames the other. HoD is the quiet perdon who just arrives, performs and then sits back. So yeah, quality speaks for itself. So when a dying men walking to his chair is more epic than an entire season of a show based in the fantasy world who's the foundation of modern fantasy, there is no amount of copium, disinformation and fake racism to hide the truth.

When I heard that there was going to be a new Tolkien series I was extremely excited! I remember always looking forward to it. We order pizza once a week and planned to watch an episode every pizza day, my dad and I. However things got in the way and it didn't end up happening, and the entire season had already been released and I hadn't seen it yet. I asked my dad if he had seen it and he told me he watched it and he loved it and its great. I was surprised because I had seen a lot of videos like this one talking about how terrible it was. Over the next week I continued to ask if he is sure it was good because more and more negative things were said online. He was adamant it was a great show and that I have to watch it. I watched the first two episodes and went to talk to him about it and he seemed confused. My poor Dad, bless his soul, had confused House of the Dragon for Rings of Power this whole time and was actually praising HotD instead of RoP! What a twist. We both laughed then agreed that RoP sucked and neither of us have seen past the first 2 episodes. I speak for myself alone but I have to say something about this because trying to watch the show actually makes me angry. Tolkien was a great author of timeless fiction that’s been read by millions. I have no idea what the people making this show were trying to do. This show apparently cost 60 million an episode. If that number is true, someone is using this production cost to launder money because it doesn’t show up on screen at all. Jeff Bezos should fire everybody working on adapting this material. The only relation between this show and previous Lord of the Rings based productions would be a similar font of lettering. Aside from the mindless direction, less professional than local community theatre acting, pointless plotting and totally absent story continuity, the pseudo profound and pitiful writing, the most nonsensical illogical battle strategy, the least believable fight choreography ever, clearly visible plastic armor on some fighters, and the use of cgi to pad out crowd sizes instead of just simply using extras, this show is a masterpiece.

Just like JCVD (van damme have quite good and very bad movies), Steven Seagal (have only bad movies) movies... They are aiming for other things that normal mortal like us does not understand.... Remember "Crank 2"? those kind of craziness and laziness in Seagal's movies needs a special kind of talent tho😅

Me and a coworker are very big Tolkien fans so we decided to give the show a chance. They could only watch the first two episodes and quit. I continued and gave them a tl;dr version of each episode. Even on very, very brief synopsis they were not trilled. While watching I couldn't help but think about every simple but yet amazing thing in LOTR. At one point I had to pause an episode, because I started to wander if another streaming platform had the extended editions and had to check. This has not happened to me in some time and my explanation is simple - I don't like what they did to the characters. I know their names, I know who they are, but I don't recognise these people. The modern interpretations of some characters are baffling. Tolkien knew what he was writing and what he meant to say. His works don't need setting update. Changing one too many things and you are losing the original message.

My son and I watched the series together! Because of his excitement I didn't got bored in the beginning, but I absolutely couldn't connect with Galadriel! Or any other one of the characters, even Elrond was strange. Who are those others? What was the Numenors Leaders name? Or the Hobbits.... I had my map of the LoR besides me and couldn't find any of the places they were. Needed to Google them. Then realizing they magically almost beemed to the places 😂, on top of it the ridiculous conversations they had. "We need to stop, bc it's so cold!" something like that. It's like watching those murder cases, were the off voice tells the same 3 things over and over again, in case you might forget them within 3 minutes . 🤣 How on earth would anyone expect this to be successful? And what did they do with this huge amount of money? Oh let's burn it in fire, we don't need it, because we have plastic painted Armours and there will be swords who look good from a far, no need to make them so nice like in the movies. We don't want to make merchandise, so no good looking cloth or jewelry, so let's just do CGI for the places instead of actually build them. We don't need them for more then 5 season 😜

Indeed. There are single events they could have lasered in on and spent seasons on by themselves. For example, when Numenor decided that they don't like being kept out of 'heaven' and so decide to take it by force. Now THAT's a story just THINKING about it. It could basically be like the Iliad. What they gave us instead will never be a classic anything except a classic embarrassment.

I rarely ever watch English language TV anymore, particularly any of the garbage that comes out of Hollywood. If you want to see great television then just watch My Mister, It's OK Not To Be OK, or Flower of Evil. Koreans, do a lot of good serious drama but anything outside of that is generally trash (if well produced). Anything light-hearted or slightly comedic results in the worst acting ever (hammy and overdone) and this is almost universal. It is a cultural acting style they seam to like (also present in Japanese programs of a similar vein) but for me it ruins what could otherwise be actual good shows; at the same time the US content quality is so inconsistent recently, so it makes sense people are branching out into different genre/markets.

It would have been interesting to see the entire 3400 + years of the 2nd age over 5 or 6 seasons. The Numenorian, Dwarf and Lesser men cast changing every season while the Elves and Aniur spirits remaining the same. A focus on the Numenor from the first king Elros to the 25th Ar-Pharazôn. Going from a pround race of men blessed with lifespans 4 times that of lesser men with good relations with the Valar to a egotistical, paranoid empire, fearful of mortality and jealously towards the elves. Though Saurons trickery they believe aging is a curse and invading the undying lands would make them immortal. But we can't have that cause that would be following Tolkien and Tolkien was a racist, sexist Christian. No we need to reimagine it for a modern audience to better reflect our modern perfect society.

My idea was each season focus on the fall of each group. They all fell. The Elves due to Celebrimbor's desire to out shine his ancestor, The Black Numenorens who chose to follow Melkor in their desire to be immortal, the Dwarves to their greed. Ending with the last battle of Elves and men that saw Sauron lose the One Ring. Each could start with Sauron gifting them the rings, except the Elves would be them making them. Edit: Unfortunately the showrunners want to retell the Fellowship which isn't what the 2nd Age is about at all. They've already destroyed enough of the canon that Lord of the Rings wouldn't have happened.

I think a lot of it comes down to one central difference that you put your finger on: according to Tolkien, Iluvatar is the one character who is silently present on every page. He is neither absent nor indifferent, but is actually influencing events constantly so that the most 'unlikely' things happen to benefit the heroes. Gandalf points it out once even in the story. But the showrunners don't want a divine presence, let alone a benevolent one. The only powers they want to admit into their world is a Sauron who can apparently mind-control people without them being aware of it and girl-power. In Tolkien, Galadriel was tutored by one of the gods directly and immediately saw through Sauron's disguise as the 'giver of gifts' and mistrusted him. But here there are no gods and Sauron easily tricks her. There is no alternative to his machinations other than different evil machinations.

I mean, Tolkien probably was a racist and sexist (kinda normal at the time). All the dark people in LOTR are bad easterlings and southerners, and outside of Eowyn and Galadriel, the females are basically ancillary characters. This isn't a secret. But, if you're uncomfortable with making something set in that already established world, then you probably shouldn't. Personally, I still found some enjoyment in the thing, but it's fully just fan fiction at this point, and will never be considered canon unless some significant stuff changes. Another note. I didn't realize the size of the budget until this video. THAT, more than anything, is quite alarming and disappointing. How, with that budget, are we not seeing an epic, generations spanning saga about the wars with Morgoth?

Just in episode 7 I think it was I brought up like 10 points that were like major plotholes/oversights on the side of the writers, yet somehow I got a friend backing em up on that silly shit. His main point was that they 'mainly filled in things not specifically mentioned in lore', to which I replied 'it's better to have mystery then to have bad answers'. Then I mentioned how house of the dragon (that one intense episode had just dropped) had some things intentionally left mysterious, because there's depth and only limited screen time. A billion dollars worth of CGI does not a Tolkien masterpiece make. The acting goes from bad to worse, granted they are working with some of the most godawful dialogue ever created. Every aspect of this series is bad. The writing is high school level drama club, the directing does not come from a desire to tell the Second Age as Tolkien wrote it rather, to tell a politically correct and woke version that reflects "the world we live in today", full of the modern day allegory that Tolkien despised. We knew "Meteor Man" was Gandalf and "Halbrand" was Sauron as soon as they were introduced which made the "great reveal" at the end of season one so laughable. The acting, in particular the "Mary Sue Guyladriel" character, is shockingly bad. She has but two facial expressions with which to work, her twitchy half-snarl and whatever the hell she was trying to express while riding the horse on the beach....cringeworthy! Most of the CGI scenes were impressive but for what they were spending per episode they should have been! Timeline compression, apparent time schisms that allow thousands of miles of open sea to be crossed by boat in 2 days.....🙄. So many mistakes and just bad choices made by the "showrunners" that keep saying "when in doubt go back to the books, go back to the books!" What books are they talking about? Certainly not the ones where Tolkien described the Second Age and the characters in it. This show is a mega-corporation's attempt to buy cultural relevance and stroke Bezos' ego. It was obvious that he and the showrunners knew nothing about the Middle Earth Legendarium nor cared about respecting the lore and canon. Rings of Power is a not-so-cheap knockoff of a masterpiece of fantasy fiction. The only reason Bezos bought the rights he did was to give the show the legitimacy and popularity of The Lord of the Rings branding to get people thinking they could expect an accurate re-telling of Tolkien's Second Age of Middle Earth. Instead we get this billion dollar dumpster fire for which IMDb (owned by Amazon) and Rotten Tomatoes had to "fix" the audience ratings by deleting negative reviews to prop the show up as it's viewership steadily declined. This show is an abomination of Tolkien's masterpiece that should not continue into season two. We have a couple of years so it's possible Bezos will pull the plug on this disaster and it will fade into anonymity. Talent, or a lack thereof, is inherent. While it can be honed with education and experience the fact is, if you don't possess it at birth then you shall not possess it at death. Payne and McKay misrepresented themselves when they claimed they would keep the show "as close to Tolkien as we can get".......what a load of dung! There is no hope for this show because, unlike Tolkien and even Jackson's trilogy, no one on this show in any high level position has any love of the lore or respect for the canon and it shows. This disaster is the direct result of untalented, uninspired and unsuccessful Hollywood hacks using a beloved masterpiece of fantasy fiction to promote their lack of skills, spread "THE MESSAGE" of political correctness and wokeness, and attack the fanbase. Tolkien fans aren't upset with the idea of diversity because the original HAS diversity where it makes sense. Isolated small villages in England and Northern Europe would not have had Africans, Asians or Arabs counted among them! That's a lack of understanding how the world works in actual history or fantasy pre-history, my god how clueless are these people? There was no "Mary Sue Guyladriel" warrior princess in the Second Age as she was already a couple of thousand years old, not the arrogant, pain-in-the-ass, snarly bitch that everyone hates! These characters stray so far from the lore as to not be recognizable in their roles without their names to identify them. We love the Tolkien Legendarium because he wrote it with such expertise, depth and love that we became immersed in his amazing world of Middle Earth. There is no such love or immersion for this abomination, with the exception of the Amazon shills, because this show has to "reflect the world we live in today"......😖. Fantasy fiction is written so that we can "escape the world we live in today" leaving all the pc and woke agendas behind and simply enjoying the telling of a good tale. Something Hollywood will never understand. Payne and McKay laughingly believe they are writers who can improve on Tolkien's Legendarium even though he was a major scholar of the English language, specializing in Old and Middle English. Twice Professor of Anglo-Saxon (Old English) at the University of Oxford and they are not. They have all the pedigree of a flea-bitten, mangy mongrel! The unmitigated gaul of these two Hollywood hacks is unforgivable. "All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us." ~J.R.R. Tolkien. I have decided to fight for Tolkien and Middle Earth at every bend in the road to the destruction of this wretched re-telling. I will take no prisoners and accept no compromise. The Rings of Power is a billion dollar dumpster fire.

RoP and HoD have a lot of similarities... -Altered source material -Diversified cast -Slower first season to set up the next Seems like those things can be done right and can be done wrong because HoD is actually entertaining

If it wasn't for my obvious bias I might have actually watched HotD because of everyone's positive breakdowns. As a book reader that has gone from hopeful to pissed off at Martin these last ~25 freaking years I just can't do it.

@@johnolism Cyberpunk is a whole series of games. They released one bad Vidya. Don't let that cause you to dismiss other media in the franchise. Many popular game series have bad movies.
