For something that could be the best fantasy series ever, Amazon's Rings of Power looks a little underpromising. This video introduces improved designs for the characters of Galadriel and Disa, some of the key heroes of the first season.

    I do wonder why this extremely expensive piece of media is set out to look so fake. An issue further exacerbated by the fact that it stands next to the Jackson trilogy, which is visually incredible, and still surpasses numerous modern movies. I guess care and passion take you a lot further than cash.

    Can't help but wonder where all that money went if they couldn't make it look better than a mediocre Netflix show. Even if we didn't compare it to the Jackson films with (one of if not THE) most extensive pre-production phases in the history of cinema, it just looks so... unimpressive.

    My main issue with Disa, as my other issues with "diverse races" is that it makes no sense in the context. Humans have different skin types because we lived apart for thousands of years. Black, white and asian people, along with any other group, only exists today because there hasn't been that much interbreeding. It's true that dwarfs make a lot of sense being pale, living underground - but the main problem lies in the genetics. And of course, the lack of a beard. In order for truly black dwarfs to exist - they have to have a whole, completely seperate, society of only black dwarfs. If she is just a black dwarf among a whole society of pale dwarfs.. Where did she come from? I hope that they explain this by having a whole society of "dark" dwarfs, like in Warhammer. Same goes for the elves. I won't mind it if they showcase a whole race of darker elves. Or they might have a special genetic variation. Kind of reverse albinism. Which would be cool too. About Galadriel: I don't mind her not wearing a helmet there. Helmets are for combat, or ceremonial. In the scene you're showing she's neither. But still, in the fellowship of the Ring, Lord Elrond fought without a helmet. And you criticize her armor for allowing mobility - yeah but she's an elf. They weigh almost nothing and are able to do things humans can't. You can't compare it to a regular plate armor. Elven armor is lighter, stronger and obviously made for elves.

  • @Anttimation

    @Anttimation

    Жыл бұрын

    I hope too that there is some explanation, be it that she is from another society of dwarves, or something else. Otherwise it doesn't make any sense. Their idea of the show reflecting the modern world is dumb, as the Lord of the Rings is a depiction of an ancient, mythical world. Re: helmets & armor - I criticize the lack of helmets for all characters in battle armor, including Elrond in the Fellowship. Give them proper, good looking helmets! Like the Rohirrim. Re: the mobility, with a proper plate armour she'd be better able to pull of all of the elvish stunts that she'd struggle with that painted cardboard/plastic they gave her.

  • @Jonathan-bu7iv

    @Jonathan-bu7iv

    @@Anttimation You really hit the nail on that statement: "Their idea of the show reflecting the modern world is dumb" Because it's not our modern society. It's a world created, that we love. It doesn't need modern politics involved. That's a fair criticism. But if he had a helmet most would miss the fact that it's him, it was the first time we saw Elrond in a movie and they wanted us to see that it was that guy later on. But still! She's in armor, in a non combat situation. Even in history people only wore helmets when they needed to. Or for ceremonial purposes. I don't think it looks too plastic. I think it looks fine, but that's subjective. I don't argue about the looks though, it's just because you said that "the front barely extends to allow her badass acrobatics", which isn't a direct quote but you get me. Elves, in all of the depictions, wear armor that is alien to us. But they're elves, in this world their blacksmiths and technology goes way beyond the regular man. But in the end I like your video and the work you put into it. And thank you for your response!

  • @Anttimation

    @Anttimation

    @@Jonathan-bu7iv I'm sure everyone interested in the show has by now heard the quotes about the PJ trilogy not injecting any of their political views into it vs Rings of Power wanting it to reflect our modern world. I really liked the elven armour of the Last Alliance as seen in the Fellowship of the Ring. Beautiful aesthetic that screamed elvish (not man-mande) and was very distinct. I do have some criticism about details in that, too, but that's another subject. Galadriel's Rings of Power armour looks like something the humans in the show could also have made, unlike the elvish armour in the PJ films.

    I hadn't even thought about the dwarves having to be pale because they lived under ground. Everyone is pointing out that Tolkiens work was focused on European mythology so it would make sense for native characters to be white. Good thing to point out though. Even with torches and other small forms of light I'd figure that the dwarves would be almost albino. I have caves near me with some life in them, fish and spiders and things, and they often are pure white.

  • @Anttimation

    @Anttimation

    And if they wanted dark-skinned dwarves, that's fine, but there has to be some logic behind it. As Tolkien's dwarves were created by carving them out of the rock by their creator, they could take the colour of the rock. But having random very different looking individuals in a closed society doesn't make sense in the context of that world.

    @@Anttimation Absolutely agree. No one I listen to cares in the slightest that the characters are black except for, just as you've stated, it makes no sense in these circumstances. Even if they tried to claim this was a Dwarven race from a distant land that Middle Earth hadn't seen before. This would open them up to make all kinds of changes without crossing the line too far. They could create the culture and explanations for appearance differences while still granting Tolkiens Middle Earth its original lore. They should have just created a new concept that's original to then. Then they could take as many liberties as they want
