Koskenkorva Valhalla: A Finnish Mythology Makeover

#finnishmythology #koskenkorva
What happens when you design a product supposedly "inspired by Nordic legends" without a clue about said Nordic legends? Valhalla by Koskenkorva is what happens.
Here I take a look at the ridiculous design of the product and replace it with a fitting design based on Finnish mythology. Introducing Koskenkorva Tuonela, a herb liqueur from the Finnish underworld!

New drinking game idea: Keep drinking Tuonela until you actually start to see the skeleton dude on the bottle in your living room.

I think it's a shame that Finnish mythology gets so little attention. It's a double shame because it just needs a slight reframing to become immediately appealing to modern audiences. Enter our hero, Big V, the baddest rap-wizard in the land. He's racing around in his tricked out sled, doing donuts an' shit, when a youngblood Slick J-Hizzy rolls up. Slick J-Hizzy is an up and coming rap-wizard who's decided that the easiest way to make a name for himself is to crash Big V's sled and defeat him in a magical rap battle. Things do not go to plan though, as Big V is simply too powerful and raps J-Hizzy into quicksand. Big V dabs on the young rapper until J-Hizzy promises his sister to be Big V's girlfriend. I dunno how to make the Sampo modern though, so just leave it as is, complete with evil bees, boats, and cow milk-turned-iron.

Don't think I'd be the target audience for that adaptation but otherwise agree 100%!

No wonder my Finnish partner goes on tirades against anything Scandinavian... I hate how when people think Finland, they think 'Scandinavian' because its 'easier' and more popular in the 'North region'. Finland's culture imo was more unique than Germanic because it maintained its Asiatic roots. I love how Finns meme, especially with 'Finngolia'.

I don't even drink, but I'd still buy this if it were on a bottle. A shame though that, despite being a Finnish company, they go for the more ̶e̶x̶p̶l̶o̶i̶t̶e̶d̶ ̶marketable Norse inspired design and name.

Yeah. Although I think the mother company is Norwegian. But still, why not do justice to the Finnish lore with their Finnish brand.

Maybe something from Pohjolan pidot as well? Or Ukon Vakat? Unlike the Valhalla party, Tuonela is not known for anything good to drink.

As a Finn from the Kainuu region that has little to none Scandinavian heritage this makes my blood boil. What the hell are they trying to do? Tuonela, Tuoni, Tuonetar, Kalmisto... all of these could've made an amazing brand name, but no. You had to go with the well known Norse stuff. It's like they're denying that we were from the far east in the first place. I was bullied for looking Sami/Asian looking anyway even if my family came mostly from Kainuu and Lapland region. Be proud of your roots. Cherish them and teach others about the culture with kindness.

Precisely! I've talked about this specific label with quite a few people now and many are of the mind that "general Scandinavian" sells better and we should embrace it. No! Why not draw inspiration from our own roots and make our stories better known. Saatana.

i would buy and drink the doubleamount of tuonela-juice, just to be better prepared for what i will be facing there. (i also just decided to take a sword into the coffin... and i am now googling the shit out of the information kraken - struggling to find a legal way to get a pagan burial in finland.. i am not sure there is.)

Finland was heavily infected of Wiking culture for many years. All the costal regions and the trade-ways to Novgorod and so on. I think that not wrong to put liquor with that name. And I think that it will sell better with that name instead of Tuonela.

En tiedä, minkä verran tätä myydään Suomen ulkopuolella, mutta Valhalla-brändi vaikuttaa epämääräiseltä "yleispohjoismaalaiselta" viikinkirahastukselta, joka toimii oikein hyvin - näin mulle huomautettiin LinkedInissä. Olisivat silti voineet edes laittaa viikinkiajalta peräisin olevan symbolin, eikä 1800-luvun vegvisiriä.

Valhalla is known worldwide and probably sells better than some unknown Finnish stuff. I like to drink Valhalla, taste good, has a name easy to get interested enough to buy first time you see it. If named some saunajuice that interested only someone hardcore into finnish stuff, it wouldnt sell as good. Think thats why they choose Valhalla, to be a true norse mythological drink it need more than just a mixtuter of alcohol and herbs, it needs a mixture of some magical illegal mushrooms as well, like Flein sopp- (norwegian)
