Finnish Mythology: Forest Gods and Goddesses

Sharing my knowledge (and artworks) about Finnish forest gods and goddesses.
Subtitles available in Finnish and English.
Tapio, god of hunt, animals, trees and forest
Mielikki, goddess of forest, nature and animals, Tapio's wife, sometimes also referred as the mistress of the forest. People asked her a permission to enter the forest
Tapiola is an old Finnish word for forest

There has been more growing interest towards it recently which is great. Egyptian, Greek and Norse often over shadow all else (though I like them as well).

Wonderful video! I love how you talked about the ancient Finnish peoples' connection to forests and all the natural magic that comes with them. I love Lord of the Rings and its so cool to learn about where Tolkien got his Elven language idea from. Oh my goodness this was such great insight into the Finnish gods and goddesses and you have inspired me to do some research on them! Thank you=)p.s wonderful illustration!

I believe all Finns now and in the past are products of the forest (all people are products of nature) and for many the connection is still unconscious but more and more people are getting aware of it. Thank you for watching. I just subscribed to your channel. Many blessings

Yeah U.K. buy the Christmas trees from Finland..it takes about 10-15 years for spruce to grow 2 meters, only 2 meters! And the spruce can live over 300 years. But no..let's just cut it after 6-7 years and sell it.. imagine the consciousness of 300 years old tree!!?? But no..let's just cut them off..

My family has had the same plastic Christmas tree for 20 years. I like the real trees to stay in the forest.

Great video, keep them coming. It is great some one makes these in english too, it is interesting history and not everyone speaks finnish. I am thou originally finn, but it is nice to show these to my other nationality friends. I was some years ago trying to find book or info of new years tin.... da daa... did not find any. These "of-course" traditions are in danger of disappearing since we don't speak of them enough. Recommendations of books on old believes ..before the time of Kalevala would be nice. Or books written about those in finnish or english would be interesting? New in your channel will check later on your other videos.

In the Kalevala, didn't Tapio and Mielikki have a son - Nyrikki, a daughter - Tellervo and a "bastard" son Kuulervo?

Ok, first of all: I loved this video. Now I would like to ask, because I THINK you haven't mentioned (I sometimes struggle with your accent, which is cool but yay, I'm not native to English so I struggle with foreign accents), about Ajattara. I remember the band (it was Amorphis' ex-singer's band, in case you didn't know) saying Ajattara is a Finnish forest goddess or spirit. Also, I think you should write the names somewhere for those of us who have no idea about Finnish language. As a curiosity, my goddess Ataecina, according to the unverified personal gnosis of our Arestala (chiefstain), who is a big devotee of Ataecina, Ataecina never leaves the Underworld as she does in other reconstructed myths, but she moves throgh different levels of the Underworld. So according to our Arestala she can't contact through meditation with Ataecine because she goes deeper into her realm to rest during winter, and that's the reason vegetation doesn't grow, cause she's not right under the soil to "push life upwards". It's not like going to sleep but it's the most similar I gound and I really trust her about this, many others are too keen to make up stories and nymph-like interpretations of Her, while she doesn't. Anyway, great video, keep going!

+Corvus Bruxo Nemeton Thank you my friend! That was very interesting about Ataecina. I should do more research about Ajattara before making a video. Astrid Lingren wrote about them in Ronja the Robbers daughter. Ajattaras being spirits close to the myth of Greek sirens. I have all god and goddess names written to my blog texts www.fairychamber.blogspot.co.uk but maybe you are right I could also write them to the videos :)

According to my DNA results I have some Finnish heritage, though I cannot find any surnames of Finnish origin. A friend suggested it may come from England through Danes somehow. I don’t know, but this is all interesting. I embrace the old gods of Northern Europe.

Minä tuosta Kaarle Krohnin kirjasta Suomalaisten runojen uskonto joku aika sitten luin, että Mielikki näyttäytyy ihmisille vanhan naisen muodossa ja Tapion naava turkki päällänsä.
