Thank you. I started reading the instructions and I decided I needed more visual instructions because the instructions assumed I knew how to take the back off. Now that I see it I understand but this was my first ring doorbell. Seems silly that I didn't understand y but if you don't want to break it you don't want to just start taking things apart.

Do you have to somehow disconnect the battery before hardwiring the doorbell or do you just connect the wires to the 2 screws on the back?

You can just connect wires to two screws on the back while following my video instruction to turn of main braker.

I saw that you connected power to the 2 screws, but did you then leave the internal Battery isolated or did you remove the transit plastic pull piece to power up the battery also?

How do you charge it? Do you have take the wires off and the screws that are put on from the bottom so no one steals the ring??

You don't have to take wires off and charge it. Only if you don't have wires to connect to, you will have to charge it sometimes. As for screws on the bottom, they are security screws to prevent theft. Keep them on and wrench handy in case you need it. I did not take my Ring off since I installed it and don't have any issues. We ended up exchanging this model for the slimmer version kzread.infoUgkx0jZ_lGlDVJhDnmagEU8gn47cmfPNlLQU because it was too wide for the only door trim area that made sense to mount it on. However, we should have just noted the dimensions prior to purchasing. Otherwise, we love the doorbell. It works perfectly, and the video is very clear, even at night.

Some of the other KZread videos show a jumper on the original doorbell chime. I don't see that on your video. Did I miss that? I also didn't see the voltage requirements for the doorbell on your video. Another KZread video shows turning off the power to the doorbell chime before staring this project. Not sure if that is necessary because it looks like the doorbell requires low voltage AC power. Which appears to be the common wiring for an older wired doorbell. However, there has to be a transformer somewhere to convert the house power (120 volts) to the lower voltage. IF you have to do anything with that transformer you should cut off the power to that before you do any work on that. From what I have seen on the other videos about this I don't think you can use your original doorbell chime with the wired Rind doorbell. Looks like you have to buy the ring chime unit that plugs into a wall outlet.

I did not need jumper because of my existing doorbell chime, but had to replace my transformer to 16V 30VA. I could turn of braker before I took of my old door bell, but I forgot. It is recommended to turn of braker when installing Ring. You are right, I can't use my original chime sound, only through Alexa. Thank you for watching and comments.

As for transformer, I called ring support and learned that I need higher voltage than I had on existing doorbell. You could measure voltage, or it should state on transformer what voltage you have.

what voltage was your existing doorbell wire? do you need to charge manually each time after wire installation?

My existing transformer was 10V and I had to change it to 16V 30VA in order to work.

My current doorbell has a chime but not sure if it has any resisters. What happens if I install Ring hardwired and no resisters on chime? Will it still work?

I mentioned in my video that because I had existing chime doorbell, I was fine to install it. Per Ring customer service guy only thing I needed to replace was Transformer with more volts. In your case I think you can try it and see does it work, as I believe that you won't damage anything. Good luck.

I just installed my first one for a friend yesterday, with an existing mechanical chime and hardwired, and after reading numerous community posts and other things, my conclusion is that the resistors are necessary as a substitute for a chime if there isn’t one. Or possibly if there’s an electronic one since they don’t use the same amount of power as a mechanical one.

If I understand correctly your question that you did not have purchased chime with Ring door bell but you purchased one to hardwire to existing door bell ( old style) than yes you can still wire it to door bell outside. Follow instruction that came with Ring and watch my video for more details. Let me know if you have more questions. Good luck.

You can use your existing chime or purchase door chime from Ring. I connected my to Alexa.

Yes, you have to have a doorbell already installed so you can use existing wires, or you have to run new wires for you Ring, which requires a bit of different skills and money to do it yourself. Or you can hire an electrician for the job.

If you connect to existing doorbell, then you have power to charge it. If you don't have existing doorbell wires than you can still use it, but you will need to charge it from time to time by taking it of your location and charge it using charging cable provided. I hope this helps.

You’re really supposed to switch off power to doorbell before removing switch at 2:25 to prevent possible short.

However, yesterday while installing one for first time for a friend who wasn’t able to do it, I realized another easy solution to the power issue: I first simply disconnected the wire to the bell on the chime itself, thus insuring an fully open connection at the bell. Trying to find the right breaker in his house would have been a challenge! And possibly knocked out other items/lights they/I needed. So then just reconnected bell line on chime as final item. Worked out fine! But took me 3+ hours because I didn’t have a couple of tools that would have made it easier. And it was on quite old concrete block wall with his drill that wasn’t the best, even using supplied bit. I had to knock out a little tiny trench/groove for the wire so that we could move the switch up about an inch and a half to the correct 48 inches and run the wire behind the plate to the center opening of the plate.

No. Initial charging is just for setup.

Mine just isnt working when hardwired cant understand why, ive got 14 volts of power going to it. Any suggestions? My doorbell sound is a classic ding dong btw

Did your doorbell work prior Ring installation. Check wires for damage which could happen when working around it. I had to call ring support once. They can help.

I couldn't do it because the admin account holder wasn't at my address but I figured it out. Good evening.I made the installation yesterday..In the ring application when I checked battery yesterday was written hardwired 100%.Today is written simple battery(not hardwired)and it is 95%.It shows that it does not charge and uses his original charged battery.Please tell me what else can I do.

Possibly. Reading a reply from RING to a similar question on a different video from someone asking why their battery needed to be charged when hardwired, the RING rep stated the hardwiring only provides a trickle charge to the battery.... " Wiring your Ring Video Doorbell 2nd Generation will charge the battery at a trickle of approximately 10% charge per day..." Cold weather and lots of motion activity can, in fact, drain the battery to where the doorbell (gen 2 - internal, non-removable battery) needs to be removed and charged.

If your existing doorbell was working, then your cables are good. You also can use multimeter to check resistance, if you know how to do it.

@@Lukas-rk4wx I can't guarantee it will work with every bell. I give you my opinion about knowing are cables good or not. You will have to make sure that you have what is needed per your instructions. One more thing that I needed is to replace my bell transformer to increase voltage in order for Ring to work. See what power your transformer is and what is required and do you need to do anything about it. My existing transformer was 10V and I had to change it to 16V 30VA in order to work.

Is 2nd. Generation the same as Ring Doorbell 2020....as I have 2020 version and it looks and package contents are exactly the same..... REAL question is...can the battery be replaced.....?

I believe it is the same. Battery can't be detached, and you need to take complete device in house to charge it. That is reason I hardwired it.

I don't remember the exact time needed to fully charge the battery, but if you are hardwiring the Ring, then you only need to charge it enough to set it up. After that, Ring will be charged through the wires.

What I wanted to see was connecting the chime wires to the ring. Very small screws, stiff wires, and not much space. What is the trick?

Patient and being careful, 🙂. I understand what you are saying, that was my concern too. With small needle nose pliers, I made loop while trying to not brake wire and made both wires same length. Connecting it to screws was not so hard, with loop I hooked them up to the screws and then tightened them.

What drill bit size did you use?

Honestly, I don't remember size of the drill bit, but use just slightly smaller size for pilot holes for easier assembly. Start with smaller size first if you not sure.

I don't remember the exact time needed to fully charge the battery, but if you are hardwiring the Ring, then you only need to charge it enough to set it up. After that, Ring will be charged through the wires. I hope this helps.

i have a question this will be tough to understand, i hope somebody can help me. we had a ring doorbell pro that was hard wired to a mechanical doorbell, the mechanical doorbell was old and not working. so the guy that installed the ring doorbell removed the old doorbell and we had 4 wires hanging on the wall. the guy put 2 wires together and the other 2 wires he attached the "pro power kit" to each wire, meaning the " pro power kit " has also have to wires. the ring doorbell pro was removed but they forgot to remove the pro power kit . i bought a ring doorbell 2nd generation and if i hard wired it i will not be needing the pro power kit that is attached to the 2 wires that's hanging on the wall. my question is if i remove the pro power kit , should i put the 2 wires together or have it separated from each other? i think i can put those 2 wires together because the pro power kit has 2 wires also which is acting like a bridge for the 2 wires that is hanging on the wall. good luck understanding my question🙄

Well, it is hard to understand it without seeing it. I don't understand why there is four wires and will be good if you can trace all wires to the source. Trace the wires to transformer, ussualy two wires, and connect it to ring. See my other video if you need upgrade transformer. I hope this helps. I bought the exact same one and a year later, and after hard wiring, when it died I find out that “hard wiring doesn’t actually charge the internal battery” I also find out, after ordering 2 new batteries and a dual charger, that these won’t work on this 2nd generation doorbell because you can’t even get to the battery. I am out $100.00+ because these items were suggested accessories to my product by Ring. The Ring products line’s Wi-Fi bandwidth strength is so low it struggles to stay connected and Chime is of no real help to any of it, it’s just annoying. In addition, while my ring device is disconnected and sitting on the kitchen countertop -slowly recharging, my doorbell wires are hanging out exposed, and I have turned off the power so the porch lights aren’t working either. This system for security is lacking in so many areas.

And therefore, if you don't have wires run to front of your house you won't be able to do wired installation. You can go with battery only and recharge it when needed.

If your Ring is not hardwired, yes, you can get spare battery, but if is hardwired than you don't need replace battery unless you have reason to replace battery due to damage or bad battery. So, yes you can.

I don't remember exact size and I can't measure it now, but I picked a bit smaller than screw just by looking at it to make a "pilot hole" You don't want to make too big of a hole for screw to be tight.

Go to settings and enable notifications. There is a settings icon above your screen when you open Ring app. Click on it, and you will see different options. Turns on motion notification that you desire.

Check your plastic back plate that you installed on wall and make sure that is not twisted. If it is aligned correctly, you should be able to screw security screws easy. Check the holes where screws go for any foreign objects. Good luck.

I never charge mine. Regardless of hardwired or not you should not need to charge every week. I called Ring support once and they helpd me with transformer issue. I would sugest you do the same. They can help troubleshoot. Good luck.

If you know that you have option to hard wire Ring I am surprised Ring support told you to recharge it every time instead to guide you to hardwire it. What I know is you have to have right transformer ( I had to by 16v) and wire that works which you could test with doorbell, if you had one connected. After that you have to connect it to wi-fi and that will be it.
