Ring Cameras Are EMBARASSING. Watch The Argus PT Ultra DESTROY Them!

Ғылым және технология

This would be funny if it wasn't so sad. See the difference between a PROPER 4K security camera and a Ring Spotlight cam. The Reolink Argus PT Ultra 4K DESTROYS it.
This video is sponsored by Reolink, all opinions are my own.
**UPDATE** Reolink have given me a statement on the Alexa and Google delay as follows... "We just confirmed with our engineers that we will make some updates to reduce the delay in the coming weeks. Please patiently wait for the update."
This video review of the Argus PT Ultra 4K shows side by side testing, for picture quality, notification speed, Spotlight and gives a full overview of the specs. Reolink versus Ring Spotlight versus Eufy solocam.
If you're interested in privacy when it comes to security cameras, then this is one of the first I've ever seen that doesn't require signup before you can add a security camera, Reolink is possibly the most secure camera system on the market.

I have a Reolink doorbell and a E1 Pro PTZ camera and my Google Nest also has a massive delay viewing footage. A car could drive past the front, and it could take up to a minute thereabouts to actually show on my Nest Hub. Sounds like it's either a Reolink playback or something on Google's servers? But hopefully Reolink can do sort something themselves as a blanket fix.

I look forward to seeing an update video on this camera after you've used it a few months. It sounds like something I'd really like to have - but it'd be nice to get it to work in a routine so I could turn my porch light up when someone is approaching the door. I had this in the dark ages using Linux, Wemo motion and a wemo light, but can't seem to get it sorted since switching to a mix of different tech. As always, love your videos and thank you for making this Saturday extra nice by just being your usual goofy self. Loved the treadmill gag on X too!

A bit over a year ago, I was testing and then installing the 1080p versions of these but with 4g SIM cards instead of WiFi. And they were solar powered. They were absolutely amazing for remote CCTV installs and getting footage out of the app was really easy, too. Absolutely blew my mind that we didn't have to have any power on-site for these and they worked so well.

I've recently thrown all 8 of my Ezviz cameras and replaced them with Reolink, and I feel like my life has been a lie all this time. I'm so annoyed that I put up with that absolute trollop for so long when it could have been this better. I actually legit took a hammer to one of my Ezviz cameras as I've been so ffkkkknnn frustrated with it for so many years, it was the release I've been needing. Now got some 811A's up and never had it so good, I can actually see video when I ask instead of spending 20 minutes refreshing a page hoping the link to China is stable enough to show me my garden.

@@paulhibbert I reviewed some of their gear through their PR team for the channel and they seemed great in small doses, but living with them for around 6-7 years it's been a totally different story. They've failed to capture things when needed, the 1 job they had, and on those times that you really need fast on-demand access to your clips it times out frequently and dies. Many of the outdoor cameras have subsequently failed too. I'd sooner employ a dodgy less than trustworthy guard called Winston Jr with a sketchy past to watch out over my house than install Ezviz again. I had everything, their NVR, outdoor, indoor, doorbell, the lot, the doorbell was the worst tbh... it was like trying to communicate with the Mars Rover

One thing that's important to note AND no review seems to mention this: Reolink battery cameras like the PT Ultra do not support pre-recording. What this means is that you will often receive notifications of an event (e.g. Person detected, Car detected, etc.) but the video associated with the event will just be an empty scene (i.e. no Person, Car, etc. within view). By the time the camera wakes up and starts recording, the triggering "thing" has already left the frame which is why you want pre-recording support. While I could see this being a feature for when these cameras are not connected to any power source (solar panel, USB cable, etc.) it doesn't make sense to leave it out when they are connected to a power source (solar panel, USB cable, etc.). As a security device the omission of a pre-recording buffer is highly problematic.

@@BadgerBob Many wireless cameras do not support RTSP because the protocol assumes an always on connection. Not always on power, always on connection. If the camera only sends a video stream when called then it very likely doesn't support RTSP either. If you're using something that needs ONVIF and/or RTSP you need to be careful with your camera selection. I have WansView and EsCam wireless cameras that supports RTSP but I was diligent in finding out if they did so before I bought them. If the camera supports those protocols you can use it in a third party camera server application like Blue Iris. If not you probably can't. BTW, those cameras are the most finicky and least reliable of the 20 or so cameras I have in service. If wired is an option, even if it means pulling cable and setting up drops, it's always the more reliable choice. Sometimes for whatever reason wireless is the only option but there are liabilities that go with that which wired cameras do not suffer from, or at least do not suffer from nearly as much.

Have three Argus 3 Pros and they work great as standalone devices but without POE they're just about useless for HA integration. Since they use solar and battery they can't do constant streaming and using something like Neolink to get the RTSP stream will just drain the battery. Wish Reolink would come up with some kind of workaround so they can be better integrated with Frigate and "wired like" functionality.

Is infrared night vision still a smeary mess with moving objects like all other Reolink cameras are? I know they can look reasonable with still images but moving images are more important given intruders don't tend to stand still for the camera :) Couldn't really tell that well on the short footage you had. I have had delays on other Reolink camera's with Alexa and Google, so I believe this may be an issue with the Reolink integration. I don't have the same delay on Home Assistant with wired cameras. Would have been great to see a real test and see things like the recording results. I have six Reolink cameras two are outdoors and suffer from Battery issues with recording. When I walk past the camera by the time they wake up and start recording I am no longer visible. For me this is an important feature because I want to be able to identify anyone who is checking out things first before coming back later. A 4k recording is useless if the person is not visible on the recording. My powered cameras when they record also have the 10 seconds prior to being triggered, which due to this draining batteries I have not see a good fix for yet on battery Cams.

Does Reolink have an API, and is it local? Seems like some cameras of theirs do, some don't. Does this camera have a local web interface, apparently if it does then it also has a local API. This is why I stay with Foscam because it has a local device side API and web interface. This is important for home assistant, and other custom, integrations. Also did it come with mounting hardware for the wall? I didnt see any in the unboxing area?

The trouble with 4K wifi cameras is that if you have several of them, that's a lot of data being moved around the network and uploaded to the cloud. Its a big drain on bandwidth. I have a couple of Ring indoor 1080P cameras and they are perfectly fine, a lot better image wise than the abysmal quality on your outdoor one.

  • @acts9531
    @acts95318 ай бұрын

The WiFi bandwidth monopolized by a 4K wireless camera is ferocious. While a single 4K camera might be doable if you require multiple cameras with multiple views you're going to experience tremendous network congestion and lag. If all you need is a single camera you'll probably do just fine with this one and get a better picture in the bargain. If you need a couple or a few of these they're going to gum up your wireless network so nothing works well, including the cameras. I have nearly 20 cameras monitoring the acreage I live on and I can't spare the bandwidth for even one or two of these cameras. I always prefer Ethernet wired nodes (including and especially cameras) where possible because I'm an IT pro so I have a very robust WiFi and wired LAN infrastructure. Wired cameras are just a far more preferable option for me but you're not me and your requirements might vary quite a lot. The real deal killer for me with this camera is lack of RTSP and ONVIF support. That means I cannot integrate this camera into my monitoring software/camera server so I wouldn't even consider buying it. At least not until Reolink offers that feature. I do have a place I'd love to put a camera like this but that camera in that place absolutely must be on a wired network and not WiFi. I have Reolink cameras and they are among the most reliable and best detailed viewing I own. I have nothing at all against Reolink, they're good cameras. I just can't and won't use this camera because while it might generate a great picture, that's useless if I can't put that picture where I need it. Where I need it is on my camera server (Blue Iris) program.

  • @paulhibbert

The 2 things are related I guess. No Onvif because too much bandwidth. You could have 100 of these cameras, and they'll only utilise bandwidth whilst they're being viewed.

@@paulhibbert That makes sense and is undoubtedly true. So this camera will not work for someone like me and you make a good point. For the people this camera will work for it won't jam up their WiFi except when the camera is actually being viewed. That's a very valid thing to understand if someone is considering this camera and it was good of you to take the time to point it out. I didn't mean to scare anyone away on the basis of bandwidth so I gladly accept your additional information and clarification. I think in terms of a static camera display that's always on, the full display of all cameras is constantly on a computer monitor and all cameras are available at once via an app or browser. A 4K camera in such a system will gobble *_WiFi_* bandwidth constantly and aggressively. The people who use a camera system where they don't need or desire a constant video display from the cameras 24/7/365 are the target market for this particular camera. Which bums me out a bit because of the lack of hardwired Ethernet access to this camera. If it had an onboard Ethernet connection then the bandwidth would not be an issue. There are several TV's here where I live that might all be playing a 4K stream from a provider platform at the same time. They also happen to be connected by a gigabit or higher physical wire or optical adapter feeding Ethernet in the immediate proximity. My physical network could handle a properly configured 4K camera or two, maybe three, placed where that kind of resolution would do the most good. Sadly because it lacks RTSP and ONVIF support that means this camera is not usable by me. That said, it's good that we discuss this so that people can understand what they're getting into. If they're like me this camera is a hard pass. If they use a camera system like most people (clearly I'm not like most people which makes me odd 😎 ) then this camera should provide excellent service. Reolink makes good, dependable cameras at a fair price point. They're not the cheapest offerings but they're better than the cheapest cameras too. The price and features of Reolink cameras compare well with much more expensive cameras that don't perform significantly better. Reolink also has a configuration app for Windows 10/11 for those cameras that I use exclusively. I have a pretty serious IT system and I hate doing things on a tiny little phone or pad screen that I could more easily do with a desktop. Which is yet another thing that makes me odd. Thanks for all you do, Paul. Information that allows me to decide not to buy is as valuable as information that facilitates the decision to buy. Keep up the good work. *_Illegitimi non carborundum_*

Thanks dude! I’ve not looked at bandwidth issues on WiFi for a while, are you saying that watching 4k streams on more than one Tv at a time could be difficult if doing so via WiFi? There’s only me and Neesha in the house so we’ve never run into this issue as we watch Tv together, but I’m curious if there was another person in the house watching a 4K stream in another room whether I’ll suddenly have an issue! I’ll have to test this theory! We’re using an amplifi hd router and it had never occurred to me the WiFi bandwidth would ever be a bottleneck at 1300Mbps 🤔

@@paulhibbert I don't know how much you know so if I seem pedantic to you, forgive me. You probably won't be the only one reading this. Which means this is going to be pretty 'long winded' for a KZread comment but it is what it is. The incoming stream is directed to the playing device at your perimeter interface (router) via NAT from your public IP to your internal LAN IP. If you're running two 4K TVs playing two different shows (or the same show at different points in the show) that signal is split at your router and directed to the respective device. Your external ISP connection may be able to handle that at Gb/s + speeds just fine. If your local wired LAN is either gigabit Ethernet or better (like optical) then the solid physical connections on your network can take quite a bit of data volume if you have the proper networking gear. Wireless LAN (WiFi) is a different matter. It's still networking and it still uses the same TCP, UDP and other protocols but it's a radio transmission and reception. It's subject to all the same problems as any other radio transmission. Theoretically if you had two 100 watt beam antennas facing each other across an empty room it would behave exactly like your wired network does. Up to the limit of its carrying capacity including networking overhead. Of course you do not have two 100 watt beam antennas facing each other across an empty room. You have walls with plumbing and wiring in them, furniture, appliances, and lights. Appliances like microwave ovens and fluorescent lights are extremely "radio noisy". You have moving resistors packed with electrolytes called human beings and those are often moving a fairly significant radio source of their own around with them in the form of cell phones, Bluetooth or other wireless devices. External to your home you have things like aircraft and police radar that work on bands that are either close or overlap with your internal WiFi bands. Unlike your wired or optical network components the wireless environment is constantly in flux. On a physical connection you get a clean full capacity signal from end to end unless you did something drastically wrong setting it up. Like running an Ethernet cable in the wall directly behind a microwave oven or laid over the top of a fluorescent light fixture in a drop ceiling. You pretty much never get that quality of signal with WiFi, our modern world is just too noisy in the radio bands and radio signals have issues with obstacles between transmitter and receiver. Density of the obstacles is also important. A radio signal will pass through a wall much more readily if it's hitting that wall at a flat 90 degree angle. As the angle becomes shallower the effective density increases. I.E. at a direct perpendicular angle it will pass between studs in the wall, at a shallow angle it has to pass through a greater span of wall material and even possibly several wall studs. These things all act to attenuate a radio signal. What that all boils down to is that your wireless networking has to adjust to the environment to work properly. Being digital and not like analog radio, wireless POTS phones and analog TV the data flow has to be as near as perfect as possible to work. It does this in two ways. The first is reduction in speed . Your WiFi will drop to a lower speed when the connection isn't perfect. It may search on its own for a cleaner channel or in the case of newer WiFi RFCs it will try multiple broader parallel channels. Neither of which is guaranteed to be successful and usually amounts to a compromise. Which reduces speed too. The second is re-sending failed packets. If the receiving device cannot decode a digital packet perfectly it requests that the packet be resent. Basically while this happens very quickly everything stops until it gets a good packet and is ready for the next one. This also happens in wired networking but not anywhere near as much as in wireless networking. It's a relatively rare thing with wired networks and a comparatively common thing with wireless networks. This also has the effect of reducing speed. What happens is that all these things add up to wireless network saturation long before the same amount of data would saturate a wired network. So the more data that is traversing your wireless network the sooner this saturation occurs. Your wireless network can only carry so much data no matter what and that maximum is reached well before it would be on a wired network. Sorry for the 'long winded' explanation but it's important to know these things in order to understand what's happening in a WiFi network and to answer your question thoroughly. Back to you and Neesha and watching 4K TV via wireless networking ... If you only have one 4K video stream active being fed by one wireless device like a wireless router in a relatively proximal placement you're probably not going to have any problem. As you add more 4K devices to the mix you're going to more closely approach network saturation with every additional device. It has to be so, you're increasing the data flow with every device. That network saturation is dependent on a lot of variables, you might get more available bandwidth in your house than a house across the street with identical networking gear and configuration. Or vise-verse. 4K is a significantly higher data flow than lesser resolutions, more information makes the picture more detailed and clearer and more information means increased data flow which is higher bandwidth consumption. You can offset this to a degree by hard wiring any 4K device that it's possible to do so. On my network I avoid WiFi like the plague, or at least as much as is possible. And I have a pretty robust network both wired and wireless. You could run more 4K TVs (or cameras, or etc.) by hard wiring them all than you could by using nothing but wireless. You can compromise a bit by only running hard wiring to some devices and freeing up WiFi bandwidth for those devices where hard connections are impractical or impossible. I.E. if you had a TV in the same room as your wireless router, plug an Ethernet cable into the back of the router and to the back of the TV and leave the WiFi networking to drive the TV in the next room. It's also very helpful to use WAPs (Wireless Access Points) that are hard wired into the network on the back end. Then set those WAPs up to use different channels and allow device roaming on both the WAP and the devices. If you can get that all balanced out well you can avoid saturating any particular segment of your WiFi because everything will connect to the nearest (strongest signal) WAP which then connects to your hard wired network. If something is interfering with the strongest signal the device will drop back to the next strongest to get a cleaner signal. Etc. This gives you a bunch (depending on the number of WAPS, I have 8 and that barely does the job for me. I really need more.) of wireless network nodes each with it's own saturation limit and none depending on a single WiFi coverage umbrella. Everything in digital networking has an upper limit and that limit is hard and immutable, set by the equipment and configuration you're using to establish your network. When you reach that limit things stop working well. Exceed it by too much and they don't work at all. With the case of video streaming signal(s) in the former case you'll start seeing buffering and transient pixelation, or a temporarily blank screen. in the latter you'll get a "No Internet Connection" error message. With "smart home" stuff you'll start seeing failures to respond from the smart home gear. When your network is saturated, it's saturated. Smart home stuff will start having problems whether it's driven locally by something like Home Assistant or in "the cloud". I hate that "in the cloud" phrase BTW. Finally, why is this important? Because as our demand for interconnectedness goes up, this is something that will be encountered sooner rather than later. I have over 160 nodes on my network and every one of those things is using bandwidth. IOT and smart home stuff might not use a lot of bandwidth but it all adds up cumulatively. The fewer nodes and the less bandwidth those nodes use, the less likely you are to encounter problems. I started having problems a few years ago so I had to spend money, buy gear and take steps to remedy them. Now I can run 4+ 4K TVs and a bunch of other stuff all at once and my ISP feed can handle that. If I were to replace all my (20 or so) cameras with always connected 4K cameras I'd start having problems with everything again. And with the current state-of-the-art gear and 40 years of experience in IT I just might not be able to solve those problems anyway. Pushing the accelerator in your car to the floor does not mean unlimited speed, the car will only go so fast. The same applies to networking and any other machine devised by man. If something seems to have infinite capacity it's just because you 're not using its full capability.
