Rina Sawayama - 'Chosen Family' with Elton John
Out Now: rinasawayama.ffm.to/eltonchos...
Lyrics:
Where do I belong?
Tell me your story and I'll tell you mine
I'm all ears, take your time, we got all night
Show me the rivers crossed, the mountains scaled
Show me who made you walk all the way here
Settle down, put your bags down
(Ooh) You're alright now
We don't need to be related to relate
We don't need to share genes or a surname
You are
You are
My chosen
Chosen family
So what if we don't look the same?
We been going through the same thing
You are
You are
My chosen
Chosen family
Hand me a pen and I'll rewrite the pain
When you're ready, we'll turn the page together
Open a bottle, it's time we celebrate
Who you were, who you are
We're one and the same, yeah, yeah
We don't need to be related to relate
We don't need to share genes or a surname
You are
You are
My chosen
Chosen family
So what if we don't look the same?
We been going through the same thing
You are
You are
My chosen
Chosen family
I, I chose you
You chose me
I chose
(Chosen family)
I chose you
You chose me
We're alright now
We don't need to be related to relate
We don't need to share genes or a surname
You are
You are
My chosen
Chosen family
So what if we don't look the same?
We been going through the same thing
You are
You are
My chosen
Chosen family
We don't need to be related to relate
We don't need to share genes or a surname
You are
You are
My chosen
Chosen family
So what if we don't look the same?
We been going through the same thing
You are
You are
My chosen
Chosen family

But actually in japan, gay marriage and couple in law having different surname are not allowed. Moreover lgbtq rights are not respected compared with UK and government don't try to improve this situation at all. I as a japanese felt that was just irony and this song was just comsumed.

This song is absolutely important to us queer people because her talk about the concept of chosen family. We are constantly rejected by our biological families and hearing that we not need share the same blood or the same surname to welcome each other as family save our lives. And the fact of the Rina is who her is brings representative to many groups that are constantly made invisible.

I am gay. I am from a rural area of India and I'm scared to come out to my family till I'm old enough to have a job so that I can be on my own. This song and the people in this comment section gives me hope that if I am rejected by my birth parents I can still belong to someone... somewhere. Sorry for my broken English. Thank you Rina...for everything, for being the beacon, for choosing me to be a part of your family. You are one of the few people I look up to...you are one of the reason I dare to create something,no matter how much miniscule or insignificant. I can't wait to meet you,to touch you,to dance with you! If you can, please add India to your world tour list. Edit: Happy pride month everyone 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🌈🌈 It's the first time I'm wishing anyone...it was also the first time someone wished me! So it's really special to me🤗🤗🤗💐💐💐

..i need to be honest right now. for someone that prides himself on pop culture I never knew this woman existed and randomly I came across this song. and I absolutely lost it. her voice is something special. and the second Elton started singing, I lost it. this woman is incredible. and Elton, you are the epitome of class and the epitome of a hard worker. I've lost 15 loved ones and four short years and seven the last one and a half. two of my best friends are gone. my ex who was only 26 died of COVID. and my best friend here in Chicago was murdered down the block from me. no one understands and I am having the worst day of my life every single day of my life and very rarely will music hit me so hard. this song is incredible. the lyrics scene so beautiful and simple but this is a perfect example of how you can have whatever lyrics you want in a song but these two together are a gift from God. I feel their love I feel their protection and I feel their experience. this woman is absolutely incredible and I cannot wait to hear more of her music. and Elton....you took my breath away. you absolutely took my breath away. also I don't usually read comments but I did for some reason, and it's so good to see so many of you guys being kind because so many people in this world are not and I'm just here to let you all know that you all f****** rock, there's very few that can understand my pain and grief and this entire song and thread changed my day but perhaps it's going to last longer than that. I can't wait to listen to this over and over and I can't wait to go to my two best friends Graves and play them this song. xoxoxo. be safe.💛

My own family was never too kind to me, and were outwardly hostile to the queer community. I thought it would always be like that but then I met my first real friends. One of them specifically was very kind, having run away from home themselves. And they sorted adopted me. I see them as my big sister and they see me as their little sister. And its the first time being called a part of a family has felt good.

This reminds me of her being excluded from the Brit awards, even though she's obviously British... she's come so far in her career. And literally changed the industry!

Why was she excluded from the Brit Awards? She's so talented with an exceptional voice!! And Sir Elton singing with her is so sublime. :-))

@@nonnamadonna A lot of things in Britain are still quite racist and archaic. You can't win certain awards unless you're either born in the UK, or have a UK passport. In Rina's case, she can't get a British Passport because Japan doesn't recognise Dual-Nationality. Therefore she wasn't "British enough" to win a Brit Award or the Mercury Prize. My mother was denied an OBE for the same reason, despite living and working in England for 50 years. She went above and beyond in her service to sports; including volunteering every day, helping disadvantaged people such as those from poverty and with disabilities. It's a bullshit system that needs to change. (So it's a bit ironic that Elton John accepted his award, whilst people like Rina aren't given a fair chance to even get nominated!)

@@skirbyphone7761 I'm so sorry that happened to your mum; she sounds like an amazing woman. At least things are finally starting to change thanks to people like Rina. Hopefully now that people are actually finally talking about racism in this country we can continue to break down these barriers as a country.

that one word change from "we've been going through the same thing" to "we've been going through the same PAIN" speaks volumes. You can tell it was likely Elton John's idea. He knows from years of experience that the thing that bonds us together is understanding each other's traumas. I love how this became a conversation between a reverred member of the community and an up and coming icon our community. It's so meaningful.

I as a gay boy who recently experienced acceptance issues in my biological family, felt very moved and identified extremely with the proposed lyrics in the song.
