Rimsky-Korsakov's not well enough known masterpiece. I loved it many years ago when I was a young man until today (50-plus years later).

This is a young man from Russia without the same advantages as we have in the States. I think the young man did a great job. And I am happy for him that he was lucky enough to procure a Shires trombone.

Pra quem não sabe, o Korsakov era um marinheiro. Passou muitos anos no mar.

I have to agree with the other musicians on this one. The soloist was good and his phrasing was excellent with a dark solid sound. But the ensemble ! I hope those clarinetists keep their day jobs .

I just LOVE this piece. Yes, I commented before, but I wanted to make the point that I was a viola major and a bassoon minor, and the brass instrument I played mainly was the French Horn. I did play the trombone, although just a little. I have to say this piece is so well-written and so well-played that I don't miss the strings at all. And that's a LOT for a violist to say... :)

Is apt that a Russian Navy band performed the piece, as NRK was a Russian Navy officer. Thought the ensemble was surprisingly inadequate. But, the conductor and soloist were very clearly a match for the piece's considerable challenges.

New contemporary music for trombone is available online at MusicaNeo. (Search for "Schottenbauer" and "Trombone" to find solos, duets, and a trombone octet.) I wrote and performed these and other pieces in the 1990's, and have been putting them online for the first time in 2013.

Probably just an attempt to get a better balance for that particular piece. We did it once at a WOSIS band weekend. I can't remember what piece it was, but shifting the band about seemed to make it sound a tonne better.

I'm not commenting on US policy, rather I'm referring to their ignorance of anything and everything beyond their shores, their sense of entitlement and behaviour abroad. I'm also uniquely qualified to comment on this as a dual US / UK citizen, having spent my life between the two places.

Arguing means that people are using their ability to reason critically, which is part of the intellect; brain food. Art should not just be an activity that causes pleasure, it must inspire and encourage the use of the powers of reason and judgment, not encourage turning off the brain.

It's remarks like that that make us (US citizens) disliked world-over, thinking that we have it better than everywhere else. You're talking down about the country that invented / discovered lasers, the electric arc, 3D holography and nuclear fusion. Did you know that in 2012 15.1% of Americans lived below the poverty threshold, while in the same year, 13.7% of Russians lived below the national threshold? If we all stopped condescending to other countries perhaps more people would like Americans!
