this guy is one of the most original guitar players ive ever heard.
Not really sure why people are saying he looks awkward or this is painful. I think he seems humble and genuinely OK to talk about what he plays and why. I really enjoyed this video.

@@NickB-md1oy I can’t remember if it was on Amputechre or The Bedlam in Goliath, but Omar wanted to sit back and direct the album and basically taught John all of the guitar parts to play on the whole album! Very cool. I’m such huge fans of both of them. I still need to listen to their collaboration albums. They did two, I think. On another note, it was John’s playing with Omar and TMV that inspired him to play more solos on his last album with the Chili Peppers.
I can see how Omar Rodriguez and John Frusciante are good friends. They are both talented musical geniuses and very humble dudes... Bless em.

People like Omar spend they're time creating sonic adventure instead of hanging out at a mall with friends following current trends. It's genius. People like Omar make the world interesting. Making original inspired music for no other reason than the music itself. Without an agenda. It's so refreshing.

Used to be able to find some info about his rig when he was running two pedal boards on the floor plus one on a stand as well as a Roland RE:201 Space Echo. He and Juan were pretty much the reason that I got so interested in pedals.
Such a modest guy for being such a great and innovative musician.

I switched to .13-56 gauge strings because of him. Best thing I ever tried. Now I can actually control my playing without notes bending ridiculously out of tune. The strings aren't to hard to bend either, you just have to have a strong grip!

wow, i've never seen omar this open, lively, and just plain happy in an interview. has anyone noticed he and cedric are looking younger these days rather than older? whatever the fuck they are doing, i hope they keep it up.
beautiful simplicity, spirit and hands
9:37 when he says "...plastic ones" the audio is actually decent for like four seconds! :)
i've come to a conclusion some time ago that the music a musician writes projects their personality. most of the time you can hear how nervous and fast omar speaks, trying to get his point across when he has so much in his head that he wants to express. it reflects in most of his music - manic, angular and very long at times! not saying it shows in all his music of course, but it u get what i mean.

Excellent interview! If you can catch Omar with his full setup, that'd be sweet!
I used to have like 5 guitars and 11 pedals but I was inspired by Omar to strip down my setup and it was the smartest decision. I now just use two guitars, two amps and about 4 pedals. I concentrate more on iust the music and performance now.
yea that arion delay pedal he's talking about is fucking awesome. the one i had a couple of years ago broke quickly, but it was completely different from any other delay. goodshit.

I have to disagree with you there, Omar. You are most CERTAINLY a musician and of the very best kind. I believe it's fact. Music is a form of art, and everything they teach people in music theory is how to emulate what music from the soul sounds like. You have accomplished something great, which is playing as closely as possible to what is in your soul. It's honest and it is the most profound and enjoyable sound on earth. the sound of life. God bless you :)
i made a guitar for myself 25 years ago, and the strings go into the body exactly like that, on that curve/angle. i did it so that the varying angles would lend the thinner strings more sustain, and the higher notes of a chord would last as long as the lower notes.
I've waited for this one for a looongg time. FINALLY!
56-13!! That's hardcore. Gonna get myself one of those Ibanez's I reckon after I've seen him in Brighton next week!
rad series thanks so much and congrats
I play .11-58, Earnie Ball Power Slinky and I think those are perfect for me. Not too thin, not as thick as the heavier strings, either. Heavy strings can be more difficult to bend (but not incredibly so), but you have to get used to bending them because it takes more than the lighter gauges.
simple not too over the top set up and he sounds awesome. You look at other bands' monstrous over the top rigs (disturbed, nickelback, etc), and it just puts you off. I like to see a set up that i can understand how it works.
the sound is fantastic
very humble dude I will love to meet this dude.

@CloudsMetallicTaste We believe it is a Seymour Duncan Custom Staggered SSL-5.
"I'm not a musician." Says one of the best musicians out there.
They might have even approached him years ago but when he had that giant pedal board he would cover up all the pedal names and stuff like that with duct tape because if he told everyone what pedals he uses then all these bands would show up with effects EXACTLY like his instead of trying to create their own unique sound.
Why, of all times in his career, did they have to review THIS rig? I would have loved to have seen a detailed rundown of the Deloused, Frances, or Bedlam Rigs....

Hey premier guitar, TMV is going on tour again soon! Plz catch up with Omar again!
What a music nerd.............I'm simply amazed when musicians look all gitty when they talk about music and such (and are actually good).
Oh, I'm not saying people with those massive rigs automatically suck, it's just that it's not necessary to have a massive rig just to play a big gig. A garage rig works just fine, as long as you know how to tweak it, and get the sound you want out of it. For example, if I had to play a massive show with my little rig, with a 2X12 combo amp and 3 pedals, I could do it. It wouldn't be the best option, but it would work. I just feel that people often go overboard with gear because they can.
i like this guy
a humble genius...
That Ibanez wh10 is a GODLY wah. John Frusciante uses it as well. So an awsome freakin pedal. I will never part with mine, even for a couple hundred dollars.
we need a Fredrik Thordendal rig rundown and a Tosin Abasi rig rundown, even though he probably just uses Axe Fx II for his "amp"
Proof you don't need all this fancy tech and a massive rig and racks of guitars to make music, just because you've made it. You see all these rig rundowns that are obviously big rockstar rigs, but his could easily belong to a guy that just jams in the garage with friends, and plays basement gigs.
@axeslinger94 I'm able to do 2 step bends but I also have a very heavy hand. Thus I prefer .13 gauge strings. Packs of strings are only $5-7. Just take a chance like I did. Bending them shouldn't be a problem as long as you practice using them.
I love how Henry is just standing back there like a bodyguard looking like "Don't do anything stupid, eh?"
If you are still not convinced with Omar's work, go listen to Amputechture, which features one of the best guitar works i've ever heard (plus Frusciante plays most of the parts despite being written by Omar)

@DennisDeeYourSavior I know, it just depresses me a great deal. I just felt like Octahedron was a step back rather than a step forward(albeit forward in different directions) like every album prior to it..
so, if you're someone, like me, who does a lot of bends, this is obviously something you'd recommend, right (getting heavier-gauged strings)? also, what about if you like to bend up to pitches 2 notes above (a whole step) often? then what? I have .11 gauges now with the Ernie Ball Cobalt strings that I have (I don't like them as much as the DR Luminescent strings though in look and in sound!), but I have thought about going heavier in the past. What do I do?
Yeah. I hear ya.
