He's tuned to E flat, so they're similar to 11's in E. I use 12's tuned to D, which are almost dead on to 10.5 sets. If your playing style is really hard and you beat a guitar (like me) they work great. Otherwise light strings sound horrible when you beat them hard. But....every one plays what woks for them....no two are alike.

No doubt I'll swap those pickups out for Dimarzio's.. Dimarzio Tone Zone (bridge) and Air Norton (neck).. I was kinked into using an original Tom Scholtz Rockman, tiny little thing, a switch for CH. Or rev , ...hated it. Fizzy, thin, noisy & 'unmusical'. No separation, a mushy sound. Altogether quite disappointing. And yet, the next person may love the thing, get great results. This is why I love what we do...

guitar rig 4 nice i like to use it too even though i got valve amps, pedals and mics and everything, but its just so easy with guitar rig 4 just record and you can tune your sound even after you have recorded.

He seems cool. When he talked about the sustainer, I couldn't help but think of Spinal Tap. The sustain. Just listen to it. Can you hear it? ahhhhhhh.

Most all these rig rundown vids I noticed something. 3 big rigs stuffed with equipment. Signal goes through 14 miles of wiring, hundreds if not thousands of circuits, filters,eq after eq,compressed, echoed, reverbed ,flanged, split, boosted, preamped and then ran through a flux capacitor and toaster oven for good measure. Then the artist talks about how they like keeping their "tone" simple.Ha. I like when he talks about the weathered guitar tone sounds better than the others. You think that signal coming out that jack and through all the above gives a rats ass.

On stage they have to imitate their old records' sounds, that's where the millions of electronics come in. Have you heard his modern stuff? Or when he writes at home? That's what he's referring to. Playing the hits from the 80's and making it sound like the albums everyone knows is anything but simple.

Aiming Wanderously I am not ragging on the guy. I have been collecting effects pedals since the early 80s and have enough to open a small store. In my man cave I run stereo to a Marshall YJM and a Mesa. I have "thinned" down my pedalboard and now down to,lets see 12! Mostly overdrives and vintage Electro Harmonix pedals all running through a bypass looper cause I like that clean straight to the amp tone also! I probably have about 50 feet of cable.

Phil has great tone. Hard to duplicate the Rockman sound that he used on Hysteria without actually using one live though. Best clean sound ever, even better than a Roland Jazz Chorus, is a Rockman. Just listen to Hysteria.
