Rig Rundown: The Aristocrats' Guthrie Govan & Bryan Beller [2022]

Музыка

The Aristocrats Tour: bit.ly/AristocratsTour
Full Rig Details: bit.ly/TheAristocratsRR
“Supergroup” is a tired, overused term in music. However, when musical aces like guitarist Guthrie Govan, bassist Bryan Beller, and drummer Marco Minnemann jam… they are an unrivaled force of nature.
Each player has a remarkable resume: Govan has worked with Steven Wilson, Hans Zimmer, and Asia; Beller with Satriani, Vai, Dethklok, and Dweezil Zappa; and Minnemann with the Mute Gods, Trey Gunn, H-Blockx, and Mike Keneally-among many others.
What makes a supergroup novel is generally the collective’s previous endeavors and collaborations. The magic with these three cats is that their superpowers combine to become a flashy and fluent highflying act.
Formed unceremoniously for a performance at the 2011 Anaheim NAMM Show, this tremendously talented trio has released nine albums (five studio and four live) in 11 years. The attraction for both the audience and the band is the same: variety. In any given performance, you can hear them shift from Return to Forever to Yes to King Crimson to Vai to Rage to Funkadelic to moments of deranged Zappa.
“We’ve been a pretty strange, eclectic band to begin with, as the music we do tips our hats to a lot of different styles,” notes Govan. “All I’ve ever done over the years I’ve been playing guitar is to just listen to everything around me and absorb the aspects of it that I liked. I’ve never felt an urge to specialize. I’m happy to keep combining whatever flavorings I like and rolling them all together.” The result: These three executive chefs put on a spicy clinic that would even please Gordon Ramsay.
The Aristocrats’ headlining 2022 run landed at Nashville’s City Winery on July 27. Before the musical throwdown commenced, PG’s Chris Kies hosted conversations that covered Beller’s booming setup, including some old favorites and recovered friends (via social-media sleuthing), while Govan focused on detailing the slight-but-crucial changes to his signature Charvel and explaining his live tonal evolution-modernized with an all-encompassing Fractal Audio unit.

... and lay down some of the tastiest fusion you've ever heard! I've been fortunate to have seen them two times prior and a third time coming up next Tuesday. I also spent a fair amount of time hanging out with Guthrie during Petrucci's JPGU2.0 event back in 2018 and I'll never forget it. He's the nicest dude you could ever meet, extremely humble about his own success, and will gladly spend time with his fans given the opportunity. He and I were hanging out with a couple other people until 4 AM one of the nights there, trying to figure out how to get more beer delivered 😂

I’m not the biggest fan of Guthrie because I’m a blues and classic rock guy… but I truly believe IMO is he is the greatest living guitarist and maybe even the GOAT because of his technical ability and versatility to play any style and do it at the highest level. Humble living legend with such a likeable personality

Agreed (although I am a HUGE fan!). The thing nobody really comments about is that 80% of what he plays live is IMPROVISED. They have a start that is planned, and an end goal, but the bit in the middle is almost always made up on the spot. In my opinion he is clearly the best there has ever been. I say that because he can play EVERYTHING the greats played (Hendrix, Page, Clapton, Beck, Gilmour etc. etc.) as well as, if not better than, they did, and on top of that he also has his own style that is so far ahead of today's guitarists. Now that he's discovered "Digital" music, I'm quite scared to see where he goes next!

That saved us so much time & headache, on what was already a very technically complex production for a bunch of Mostly Cosplayers, and the sound guy was v pleased. Ya got some musicians lookin out for y’all - being able to tell them “I only need One DI into the soundboard for my signal” is one of my fav things about gig setup now

Such delightful folks, and incredible players. Guthrie is still the gold standard to which I hold all instrumental players.

It's hard to even imagine a better guitar player than Guthrie. Just an absolute master of the instrument ...and a genuinely nice person.

Great to see someone like Guthrie not eschewing the "MUST BE TOOBS" and talking about using what is right for the gig/situation.

He's one of the rare cases where a modeling rig actually makes more sense. Guthrie can just vibe in any style so fluidly that a rig that can do this much without a fridge full of racks probably makes touring better in every way for him. Most people don't need a fractal and could benefit from committing to the sound of one amp, Guthrie Govan is not most people. A lesser guitarist can get lost with endless possibilities...for Guthrie it's like Goku taking off his weighted clothes 🤣

I went to a workshop with Guthrie. He told a story about working with Hans Zimmer. Guthrie got the music (sheets and recordings), but there was no guitar in it. He called Hans: "what should I play? There is no guitar?". Zimmer responded something like "Well, you will find something". Guthrie was able to find something and add it to the music ... Amazing guitar player (and BIIIIIG Zappa fan :-) )

If a stolen instrument from a famous brilliant musician came in to my hands i would have given it back to him/her for free. Not to every musician, but to Brian Belller in a heart beat. And whit that i would have made the biggest contribution to modern good music witch has become so rare and needs all the support it can get.

Guthrie is so polite and humble that you can feel that in his nodding.
