KingTone’s The Duellist is currently Ariel Posen’s most-used pedal. One side of the dual drive (the Bluesbreaker voicing) is always on. But there’s another duality at play when Posen plugs in-the balance between songwriter and guitarist.
“These days, I like listening to songs and the story and the total package,” Posen told PG back in 2019, when talking about his solo debut, How Long, after departing from his sideman slot for the Bros. Landreth. “Obviously, I’m known as a guitar player, but my music and the music I write is not guitar music. It’s songs, and it goes back to the Beatles. I love songs, and I love story and melody and singing, and there was a lot of detail and attention put into the guitar sound and the playing and the parts-almost more than I’ve ever done.”
And in 2021, he found himself equally expressing his yin-and-yang artistry by releasing two albums that represented both sides of his musicality. First, Headway continued the sultry sizzle of songwriting featured on How Long. Then he surprised everyone, especially guitarists, by dropping Mile End, which is a 6-string buffet of solo dishes with nothing but Ariel and his instrument of choice.
But what should fans expect when they see him perform live? “I just trust my gut. I can reach more people by playing songs, and I get moved more by a story and lyrics and harmony, so that’s where I naturally go. The live show is a lot more guitar centric. If you want to hear me stretch out on some solos, come see a show. I want the record and the live show to be two separate things.”
The afternoon ahead of Posen’s headlining performance at Nashville’s Basement East, the guitar-playing musical force invited PG’s Chris Kies on stage for a robust chat about gear. The 30-minute conversation covers Posen’s potent pair of moody blue bombshells-a hollow, metal-bodied Mule Resophonic and a Fender Custom Shop Jazzmaster-and why any Two-Rock is his go-to amp. He also shares his reasoning behind avoiding effects loops and volume pedals.

Love Ariel and his playing. When players demo their set up and are immediately “in it”, is great. Marcus King’s rundown was similar in that he’d start playing and was ready to let the tone carry him off.
Ariel is a monster player. Every time I hear him play I'm inspired
Ariel seems like such a good dude. Love his songwriting and genuine approach to music.
Love Ariel, seems like a down to earth guy who loves what he does. Hope to see him live someday!
Ariel Posen is just a next big thing in guitar world, what a superb dynamics and fretboard mastery he has and plays so melodic all the time.....

he's also a fantastic vocalist. the real deal talent
Maybe it was just the moody Monday but this is my favorite rundown Chris has done. Good work.
I love how he mentions Jeff beck, specially after today 😢
That dude is such an amazing player…
Wow what a trip seeing a Winnipeg cat on PG's Rig Rundown! Fuck yeah dude!
Incredible talent. Saw his trio in a small room last spring. One of the best shows I’ve ever seen.
I absolutely love Ariel's playing; and who knew (I didn't b4 I watched ... thx PG!) also his approach to using gadgets (pedals, effects loops, et al) especially out-of-the-box amp sounds. And he is such a nice person too (met him at NAMM a few years back he is so generous with his time talking with fans).
Watching this shortly after hearing the bad news about Jeff Beck, r.I.p. 😢We need more guitar heroes, I feel we have a contender here❤
Was able to see him that night at Basement East and he killed it as per usual.
I could listen to Ariel playing anything with a string on it.. such talent and so tasty playing!
Such great tone!
He's not just a very fine guitarist, he is a very inspired musician and that's makes the real difference...👍🏼👍🏼💪🏼💪🏼
Whtta great player and rundown. Our boy Chris does it again! 👍🎸👍🎸👍

Rock on!
It's great hearing some melodic harmonic playing, rather than the normal blues, rock sounds.
Such an amazing musician.
Awesome to have Ariel on guys! he is a class act and such a great player!!! Great rig rundown! Thank you

Our pleasure!
I don't personally like all his stuff, BUT, he gets it. Creating his own sound that is almost instantly identifiable instead of trying to recreate others sounds that have been done before and done better.
Did not expect to hear Saginaw Michigan this morning lol. Never knew that’s where they were built.
Love the warmth in Ariel’s approach to tone.
Awesome tones from Ariel

BRUTAL SOUND
Totally agree with the round tip slide comments.
19:35 RIP
That was beautifully put... "I want to hear how the guitar speaks with your hands on it."
This interviewer is very knowledgeable attentive and reserved! Know what question to ask, know how to ask the question, and shut the hell up! Masterclass in interviews here..... Pay attention guys!
Love Ariel, one of my faves. But I cried a little tear when he mentioned Jeff Beck…
Ariel always has an amazing rig. Interesting that he’s not using his signature Hudson drive.
Mule!!! Matt is the man!
I've seen Ariel interviewed and/or just talking about his gear quite a few times now. He always comes over as very laid back and friendly no matter who he's dealing with. He has an interesting approach to making music which either works really well for me or bores me witless depending on the song. Definitely an artist worth watching live for those moments of magic where he stretches out and finds those notes you're not expecting.
I agree completely.
I believe E to B is down a 5th going from B to the E would be up a fourth. But I’m a drummer.
Black fountain! Yeah!
String Gauge at 5:40
Love the Keeley Hydra!
Fitting that Ariel would mention Jeff Beck......RIP 💗🤘🏻💗🤘🏻💗

I am the same way with volume knob or volume pedal. I am more used to the Volume knobs. To me, I seem to have more control. I imagine if I worked with the pedal more I could get used to it, but I am more comfortable with the way it is.
RIP Jeff Beck
.a.true.inspiration.
A lot of times Chris has to keep the conversation about gear moving, this time all he did was set him in motion and Ariel just ran with it. Great rundown.
Love the tip of the hat to Bill Nash! S63 faithful
💕💕💕
For the Mayer heads who heard the Slow Dancing harmony at 0:47 and that ongoing turn into the second 6-4-1 run, I believe he’s playing a C diminished arpeggio (flat VI dim) to lead into the c#min (vi). It’s a beautiful note choice.
Chris, dont worry about the comments! You do a hell of a job.
11:31 anyone know what brand Ariel’s coat/shirt is? I really like it and want one like this. Thanks!
Sounds like me, I don't know the technical terminology for the gear, just how I'm manipulating the equipment an why 😂 cool video
Robert keeley needs to release more Posen hydras…I missed them twice!
Reminds me of Bill Frisell
Super random but does anyone know what type of jacket Ariel is wearing? I love it 😂 and what an amazing video! Thanks for sharing!
Chris Kies is the man 🙌
Ok...But when is Foals rig rundown going to be posted?

if you haven't heard him on the scary pockets "levitating" cover, you should cio
Ariel is a super nice guy in person as well. Let's normalize people feeling comfortable putting their tuner wherever they feel in their chain! Mine is at the end 😜
what power supply does he use?
wait i'm confused, does color have anything to do with it?
Please ask you camera or audio tech disable compression when showing amps and audio effects!!!

StringJoy! That’s a huge part of the sound. They don’t sound like regular guitar string! They sound like you think a string should sound!
Kinda weird that his signature pedal isn’t on his board. Makes a person think it was just an economic endeavour, not an artistic one. Especially since he’s now shilling for the V2- why should we buy a more expensive version when he stopped using the first one?
Ariel and The Tallest Man On Earth have such tasty tones
I only watch the bolinger ones 😅
Did I misunderstood something or is he really running his fuzz at the end? Or did he start from the end?

Tone knob on teles are important people tend to not use the tone knob.

The Jeff Beck reference 😢
Mentions Jeff Beck...
Ironic he mentioned Jeff Beck who we just lost
I keep reacting to stuff he says and plays like John Bohlinger would. The interviewer's reaction at 26:03 haha zzz
P90....yeppers.
Ariel is so 🆒
@justin jeske that you d00d??
His bit about effects loops made no sense at all to me. Each to their own of course.
Wished the interviewer would take his hands out from his pockets. He’s so shut off
Watching this because I’m the only human apparently who didn’t enjoy “possibly the worlds greatest guitar solo” and thought it was super boring - gotta see why everyone liked this guy cuz idg it
