1974 "Krasner, Norman: Beloved Husband of Irma" 1979 "Welcome Back, Norman" 1984 "Normal Checks In" 1989 "Norman Gives a Speech" Douglas P MacIntosh's wonderful portrayal of Norman Krasner, whose life is the virtual embodiment of Murphy's Law. Whether battling the slings and arrows of a public restroom, an airport, a hotel room, or a business conference, Norman holds on to his existential notion of "success" under the gaze of the unending suffering of that which we call "life," getting beaten down again and again. And yet he persists. He perseveres, always moving forward, if not always in a straight line. And while we laugh, it's not truly at him but more with him, because in Norman we see our battles against our outrageous fortunes. We recognize in his struggles our own struggles, and rather than pity we feel affinity with him. His success isn't the glamorous "everything goes perfectly" type, but the more mundane "I won because I didn't give up" type. And if Norman can do it, so can we, because we are all Norman.

The kicker is that you can see what they're going for. They clearly wanted it to be Mr. Bean crossed with a "life's eternal loser" type struggling to get through these relatable scenarios. Without the charisma of someone like Atkinson to carry it, though, and without Norman having any sort of agency in any of his suffering, it just comes off as the unending tribulations of a sad sack. Watching the unluckiest man on Earth get shit on by every aspect of life just ends up being depressing more than funny.

57:16 In every interview about making "Manos" that I've ever read, Bernie Rosenblum (who did stunts, was the guy in the British sportscar marking out with the girl) or the camera guy complained that shooting in the dark always attracted moths, because their location was a ranch on the outskirts of town and the trees were full of them. They never thought to shoot day for night even once, that's how raw to film-making the crew were.

This movie proves that if you are going to shoot wild track (soundless) and dub everything in later, it's still good practice to have a tape recorder on set so your dubbers can match the intonations of how the actors spoke the lines, so the lips match better if the dubbers are not the actors in the film.

I thought this version let the movie breathe a little more, and as a result even more of Manos' shittiness came through. I don't know if the original cut out some scenes but I swear there are a few parts of the movie here that I don't remember from the MST3K version. Definitely more awkward pauses are obvious.

I want the Torgo theme for my ringtone!!!😂😂 It’s been theorized that Torgo is actually a Satyr, hence his weirdly shaped legs. And the young actor who played Debbie thinks the Torgo actor was high throughout the shoot.

Supposedly he was taking pain meds to deal with those uncomfortable leg braces, so being on them during shooting is very plausible.

Good on RiffTrax for fighting that shit. I've already watched this one but I'll support (almost) anyone fighting the good fight against fake claims.

I've read lately that the actor was tripping balls on acid while filming the movie and was too far gone to put the leg prosthetics on correctly, even though he supposedly designed them himself, and hobbled around in actual pain for the shoot. And that he killed himself shortly after the film's release, due to his drug addiction. Bizarre story.

Sad thing, for real. John Reynolds (Torgo) turned 25 in September of '66, and killed himself a month later, a month before this movie was released. I actually can see beyond the character makeup. He was a cutie.

As I understand, Reynolds had a lot of emotional problems and dealt with extremely deep-seated depression. In the 1960s, there was still a stigma attached to any sort of mental health issue, and even fewer effective resources for help. The drug use was likely a maladaptive way of coping. It's still a tragedy that he ended his life at such a young age.
