Since you were already in Düsseldorf, they have a suspension monorail too. It connects the railway station "Düsseldorf Airport" with the airport terminal. Another suspension monorail nearby is in Dortmund. The Route length is 3.162 km and it connects the suburb Eichlinghofen with various points at the TU Dortmund. Different to Wuppertal, both of these systems are driverless.

and chapter 4 is the H-Bahn in Düsseldorf?
For those wondering why the Wuppertaler Schwebebahn is the way it is: The Schwebebahn was built as such because Wuppertal is located in a river valley (that's what Wuppertal means; Wupper Valley), and because of steep slopes, the original towns that now makes up Wuppertal expanded lengthwise (resulting in the thin shape of Wuppertal today). It wasn't suitable to build a tram nor an underground subway, so as a way to both unify the valley and find a place for transit to solve congestion, they built a suspended monorail that followed the Wupper River (as shown on the map at 6:02). It's not a system unique to Wuppertal as like you mentioned, Japan as well as Memphis, TN, Dortmund, Düsseldorf Airport, Dresden, and recently Chengdu, China all have these, but of course, Wuppertal has the oldest suspended railway. And department stores in the US used to have mini-versions of these during the holiday season that took excited children through a wonderland to see Santa.
When I woke up this morning, I wasn't expecting to encounter the phrase "the elephant that fell off the monorail", but there you are
Amazing this survived both World Wars. Impressive.
Definitely on my Germany Travel bucket list! Thanks for doing this! One of your coolest videos. If you ever do the coast route in California, lunch & beers are on me in Santa Barbara!

🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 Aber wirklich.
I went on this monorail when I was 12 during a school trip to Germany. I regret not really appreciating it at time because it was quite a while before I became as interested and appreciative of railways as I am now. Hopefully I'll get the chance to ride it again one day.
While touring Germany in 2022, my wife and I made a special trip to Wuppertal just to ride the Schwebebahn. We did the whole line, from Oberbarmen to Vohwinkel and back, stopping off in the city centre for lunch, and had a great experience. Pity that Wuppertal is such a grimy industrial city though.
@TheUltimateEel
Жыл бұрын
I mean, yes, Wuppertal is grimy but what can you expect of the very core of the industrial revolution. Considering that most manufacturing was outsourced to China and the city got bombed to ashes, i think it's griminess is to be expected.
I ❤️ architecture. I'm in the U.S., northern Minnesota by the Canadian border. Structures here are maybe 100 yrs old at the most - farmhouses, tiny schoolhouses, Lutheran churches & train stations. That's pretty much it where I live.
@JohnHazelwood58

Don't get me wrong, but 100 years isn't "old" - well at least where I come from (good "old" Germany). The oldest building in my surrounding is over 800 years old, but I know that there are even older buildings in Germany. I think the oldest building dates back to the year 1097! If I did my math right, we are talking about a house which is older than 925 years! :) Btw: The first ride of the "Wuppertaler Schwebebahn" was back in 1901. So this "flying traing" is even older than 100 yrs. That's just as a side note! :)

I mean in reality even most german buildings are not truly that old thanks to a big oopsie in the 30s-40s
@JohnHazelwood58

Germans even have a word for it: "Altstadt" (< translt. "old city") as they have old cities with old buildings!? o_O Over 800 (!) very old cities survived the "oopsie" and a lot of houses / buldings, too. I just need to take a look out of my window and see a huge building from 1219. Compared: When was the USA discovered? 1492 ... so: you won't find such a building there, I guess?! o_O Otherwise Disney would have picked an american castle as the "sleeping beauty castle" and not a german casle, which was built in 1884 ... btw.: you can still visit it! It's open for tourists! :)

@@JohnHazelwood58 Yeah I think that's their point. Beyond a few places in New England, all American architecture is relatively very modern, at least when compared to Europe. Because of this, they're saying that they appreciate the older architecture of Europe more. You seem to have missed the whole point of their comment and have gone on a rambling tangent in a weird bragging tone about how old your country's buildings are. I live in the UK with plenty of very old buildings, but most people just take them for granted. Living in an old city isn't really something to brag about, it's just wherever you happen to be born.
@vivianpowell1732

@@JohnHazelwood58 Americans understand that the buildings in our country are not as old as those in Europe and other parts of the world. We don't need that lecture. The town I live in on the East Coast of the United States was founded in 1670, and my home is less than 3 miles from the landing site. So I am fortunate to be able to have and share this relatively long history of my old parish.
I like this king of trains the most! Got exited with the previews 2 chapters in Japan, now I got really surprised this one has been operating since 1901!!! Thanks again for the ride!! Saludos!

The next ticket in this form is expected to be available from April 2023, for 49 euros the whole month to use all means of transport throughout Germany with the exception of express trains. Of course, people will complain again, because it's "way too expensive". That's a strange attitude, considering what a monthly ticket on local public transport currently costs. A monthly ticket in my city with local transport currently already costs 77 euros.

Fantastic! What an insightful tour!
I know the older one (the orange and blue one 72 model), because when I was young my grandma used to take trips with me to the Zoo in Wuppertal, and of course it always included rides with the Schwebebahn. I totally loved it! A bit pity the newer model isn't as reliable as the old one and does often have cancelled rides, because of technical problems.

Well, most of the problems have nothing to do with the new trains. First a power rail fell down, than the track was damaged. And they have problems with the ne control system all the time. But the control system is not part of the new trains. The trains could work with the old system, too.
What a lovely functional piece of history! Glad you were able to visit and ride this ☺️👍

Oh wow... Greetings from the neighborhood. Hope you've enjoyed the Lost Place aka. Vohwinkel Station :-) As a German it feels embarassing to see the condition of many of our stations compared to the japanese stations you show in your other videos. Almost everything away from the AAA-Tourist hotspots is dirty, destroyed by idiots and not welcoming at all.

Düsseldorf Airport has a monorail too between the railway station and the terminal via the parking garages. My experience of the Schwebebahn was great though the swinging can be quite violent when decelerating as approaching the stops. I think they go through a resonance point.

I always wonder when we have tourists here.. despite the Schwebebahn and some culture destinations(the famous dance theatre, a theatre and an opera) this city doesn't have much unless you're more of the outdoor guy type. The city is really green but like TuxCommander said, if you want to visit Wuppertal do it in summer. The winters here are absolutely depressing. A friend of my who lives in Essen(which isn't a beauty of a city itself) described it once as "Grey with mountains".
This must be on every train/transit nerds bucket list.

I have a fear of heights. Even watching this video made me nervous. Beautiful scenery, though.
The one good thing with living in Greater London is now with crossrail which I live right at the end of the line in the south east (Abbey Wood) is you can get anywhere else in London in no time at all. You don’t have to wait for long if you have to change the type of transport. It has to be one of the best transport systems in the world now with crossrail, docklands light railway, buses, river boat, underground, tram, train and lastly the cable car over the Thames river.
The integral triebwagen you rode on from düsseldorf, has actually a quite interesting history. They were used in the south until some time ago, when they were delivered in the early 2000s they were so bad, they bankrupted the manufacturer. But i always liked their design.

We should definitely build a suspended monorail in Pyongyang above the Taedong River and have it connect the Sci-Tech Complex on Ssuk-som island on the western end of the city to the Rungrado May Day Stadium (world's second largest stadium) on the eastern side with stops at the Liberation Tower (on mainland across from southern side of Rungra Island), Okryu Bridge (by Sungni metro station and Pyongyang People's Theater), the Yanggakdo International Hotel (for tourists; on Yaggakdo), and Yanggakdo Stadium in between. We have a lot of transit already with trams, trolleybuses, and the beautiful Pyongyang Metro, so this monorail would make the city even more connected.
