forget about Zermatt-St. Moritz, far too long, and partly very boring -go from Zürich to Chur (SBB), then RhB to St. Moritz (you pass Filisur-Bergün-Albula), one of the most interesting parts of RhB. and on another day St. Moritz-Bernina-Poschiavo-Brusio (you can get off there and walk 500m to watch other train pass very close) and return again from Brusio, or continue to Tirano and later with FS (Italian State Railways) to Milano

I'm really looking forward to seeing your travels in Europe! There are so many must-dos in Europe when it comes to trains and I see a few of them mentioned already, so I'll mention some that are in my part of the world: If you're visiting London there is a sleeper train that runs up to the Scottish Highlands called the Caledonian Sleeper. I would highly recommend taking it all the way to the town of Fort William in the Scottish Highlands. From Fort William I would then recommend taking the Jacobite Steam train to the fishing village of Mallaig. The train is extremely popular with Harry Potter fans since it goes over the Glenfinnan Viaduct, so if it's fully booked I would still recommend taking the normal commuter train to Mallaig. Other good Scottish railway lines are Glasgow - Oban, and Inverness - Kyle of Lochalsh. Our trains are old-fashioned compared to most of those in Japan, but the scenery is breathtaking.

If you want a truly unique train ride, Start from Narvik, Norway to Gothenburg, Sweden. then take the Express Train to Oslo, Norway from there. From Oslo, you can take the Train to either Kristiansand, (Norway) or Stavanger (both in the southern part of Norway) to board a ferry to Hirtshals, Denmark. From here, take a train bound for Copenhagen (Denmark). you can train to anywhere in Europe from here, I would recommend this as it is one of the Northernmost stations in the world, and a truly unique way to see the Northernmost parts of Europe. If you are interested in more details, you can send me a message.

Hi Kuga, For sure you’ll have fun if you come to Switzerland! You should go to Zermatt and try the special transfer train from Täsch to Zermatt (as Zermatt is car free) it’s fun to see because people can load directly their luggage and skis on a trolley. Up there, you’ll have fun with the Gornergrat Bahn or gondolas to get the best view on the Matterhorn. Or, we even have special trains in which you can cook and enjoy your very own cheese fondue! An other nice line is the MOB line which have some « belle époque » or scenic cars. And in my area, we have a lovely small museum which runs steam engines on selected dates, it a short trip but defenitely worth it!

Hendaia - Donostia - Bilbo - Bermeo (Hendaye - San-Sebastian - Bilbao - Bermeo), it's a unique 1000 mm gauge commuter electric railway in Basque Country, Spain, operated by Euskotren. Not as comfortable as Japanese trains but a nice experience with great views (especially if train windows are clean, which doesn't happen often).

The view from Shimoyoshida looking towards Mt Fuji with the pagoda to the right and the bullet train is absolutely iconic. The pagoda is a cenotaph honouring Japanese war dead. The park also contains a statue of the Meiji Emperor looking out towards My Fuji, and that iconic view is what the statue “sees”. (Yes, there really is a Shinkansen line that passes through: you have to walk under it coming from the train station.) It’s much better in real life than one would think from this video and well worth the effort to get there. We went a few years ago during winter, which almost guarantees a clear view of the mountain and a perfect photograph. Fujisan is both the Japanese name for Mt Fuji and the name of the town at its base. During the Edo period there was a massively popular cult of Mt Fuji (a true religious cult with Mt Fuji as the deity) and the town had a great many guest houses catering for pilgrims from all over Japan coming to climb the mountain as a spiritual exercise. Many of the guest houses are still in existence though often re-purposed. There is one which is a museum. Lake Kawaguchi also provides very nice views of the mountain. There is a local bus that circumnavigates the lake.

If you make it as far as the UK, Kuga-san, I think you'll enjoy the London Paddington-Penzance main line. It takes in the flat farmlands of Somerset, the lush rolling hills of Devon, the romantic, abandoned tin-mining landscape of Cornwall and the famous South Devon coastline panorama between Dawlish and Teignmouth. You'll cross from Devon into Cornwall on Brunel's iconic Royal Albert Bridge, ending your journey in picturesque Penzance, on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. It's said to be one of the most scenic lines in the UK, and it lives up to its reputation!

I remember my really crazy trip when I visited Mt. Fuji (from Odawara via Gotenba, Fujiyoshida, taking both train and bus to Kawaguchiko), it took a lot of more time than direct express from Tokyo but the cost was actually similar. And as my goal was to visit both Narusawa and Fugaku cave, as well as Aokigahara and Fuji Five Lakes, taking buses was really convinient.

If you make it in Central Europe, then you're gonna enjoy the ÖBB Railjet. It travels from Munich (or maybe even Frankfurt), Germany to Budapest, Hungary. And it stops at some really beautiful towns and cities such as Linz, Vienna, Győr the list goes on. Plus the locomotives were made by the same company as the Keikyu 2100 and 1000 series trains, so they have a similar sound when they depart.

Thanks! This info is very useful! When I travelled to Kawaguchiko in 2016, I had to switch trains from the Chuo Line (between Shinjuku and Otsuki stations) to the Fujikyu Railway Line to Kawaguchiko Station. This direct train launched in Mar 2019 is so much better and convenient!

Dear Kuga-San! Thank you so much for your videos! I really enjoy “traveling” with you! Mt. Fuji is absolutely stunning! It is one of my travel dreams to visit Japan, and I must admit, your attention to the details have already thought me well, so I am well prepared for my journey. When you will travel to Europe- please have a safe trip and have a wonderful time! Although you did not mention where you will be traveling in Europe, I wish you could visit UK. They have some breathtaking fields and the greenery there is truly magnificent. Best regards from Bay Area, California.

The Channel Tunnel from the UK to France. Any train through the Scottish Highlands. Trains along the Scandinavian coastlines. Take any train through Rome or Athens.

Awesome video. I love Fujiyoshida a lot. The feeling I had on my day of visit was just so incredible. There's a sense of calm and accomplishment that's hard to describe. Would love to pay a visit to Funinomiya one day. Seen a few videos and I love it too.

In Europe, take the train from France to England, Eurotunnel. It is a fascinating ride under the sea. Or in Switzerland, the train from Interlaken to Jungfrau. Beautiful views.

Kuga san thank you for all your videos! You can cross London from west to east by taking the tube, a canal boat, a river boat, a cable car and a light railway. It's a fun day! Also if you go to Italy the rail approach to Venice is beautiful.
