Riding the Lexus hoverboard in Spain

Ғылым және технология

Lexus invited us to Spain to ride the hoverboard it created for a commercial. Our resident skateboarder Sam Sheffer found the board to be very difficult to ride - but it does hover! Read the full story here: www.theverge.com/2015/8/4/9091...

    I’ll answer what was left out, it uses quantum locking. Its liquid nitrogen not water. The nitrogen deep cools the super conductor causing it to lock to the magnetic strip on the ground

    ValiantPixel You can say the same about original radio experiments in the late 1800s not being a thing consumers were looking for or could find useful. Over time it lead to wireless telegraphs, then audio radios, then televisions, then cellular phones and eventually smart devices. The great thing about this technology isn't that I can buy it now, but the potential it has in the future as people work on refining the concepts and creating better utilization of the early models. Might not be now, might not be in 5-10 years, but with enough people looking at the tech it might evolve into something usable and surpass our expectations.

  • @Nickuncle

    Scigic And technology speeds up exponentially. It's cool but I think what makes skating cool is its simplicity. I doubt hover-boards will be really hyped anytime soon. Hell, you almost see more longboards these days than skateboards.

    Scigic Except that unless you can somehow use gravity against itself or natural Earth's magnetic field to force yourself against it on a skateboard (which you won't be able to do) this is indeed useless. They basically "tricked" the board into being a liquid-nitrogen-cooled train. Nothing more, nothing less. But yeah maybe one day they will make magnetic skateparks, forget about riding anywhere outside and doing tricks, which would be a waste of money and time instead of working on real life solutions.

    Scigic thank you haha its a step in the right direction yea I would prefer a normal skateboard but its still pretty cool haha like you guys are telling me if you had a free chance to ride it around the track you wouldn't. Keep your consumerist views out and its still an awesome thing haha

There reason stuff like this exists is because it lets the engineers have fun and stretch out creatively. I would have liked to see their marketing reflect this instead of implying they can do the impossible.

    @noneofyourbusiness4294

    6 жыл бұрын

    Brendon Fields well, generating tons of thrust to shoot something in space is a bit easier due to the fact that you can use actual fuel. The thing with the hoverboard is, that you don't want it to be loud or too heavy, because people would want to use it in public. Just ripping apart streets worldwide to add such magnets won't work either, no company would want (and probably would have) that much money to spend. Hovering isn't a thing that's easy to create, if you take that into account, it requires a completely new technology, one of the kind you don't just come up with by chance

The skatepark and board would both need to be magnets of the same polarity to create the repelling force you're thinking of. i.e.: Either both components be positive (+) or both negative (-) for that idea to possibly work, or else have one be ferromagnetic and the other be diamagnetic.

    Scigic Are you honestly suggesting that in the future, we will build magnetic roads and pavements, just so we can have transportation that levitate a few inches off the ground? Radio is a very versatile technological advancement with many applications, but this is just a superconducting magnet. it's nothing new, and other than floating stuff over other magnets, there's not much else it can be used for. Maglev trains can use this tech well, but again, they aren't new and that's the only application I can see for this tech in the real world. Even with weight reduced, better control and a functional fuel source, this tech is a dead-end just because you'd essentially have to turn every car and board into a mini train for it to work. If it can only go on one hard to manufacture/maintain surface, why would we ever swap wheels for this? Maybe if they changed the tech so it didn't need the specialised surface, it'd be interesting, but right now it's hardly better than a party trick.

    ***** What I am trying to point out is that the technology is in its very early days. If we were to go back to the early days of any technology you would find similar comments about the unsuitability or non-sensibility of that technology even with something as ubiquitous as radio, but because people persisted through the criticism they turned it into something great. I'm not claiming to know where this technology will go. Will I drop money on these early experiments? No, but am I excited for where the potential this technology could lead to in 20-30 or even a 100 years? Yes.

    ***** He has a point. Meanwhile, at the dawn of electricity Edison tried his hardest to prove that Alternating Current was dangerous, useless, and that Tesla got it wrong. Do you know what electricity we use today? You guessed it; A/C.

    It's true and progress has been made. I think the temperature now needed for a superconductor is -130 compared to a little above 0 kelvin fifty years ago. So give it a 100 years and we might do it.
