That room is kinda somewhat like the Amtrak Superette sleeper rooms. Except it's larger, more pleasant to be in, clean, and everything in the room actually works. And it's cheaper to book.

Just a tip you said “these sofas turn in to a bed”. They are seats in English. A Sofa normally seats three or more people, though sometimes two. But a two seater is also called a “love seat” at least in the United States. I’m English not American and can’t remember if the English use the word “love seat” lol 😂.

Another tip, if it helps… with your bread roll you said “I got a refill” in English that’s usually used for beverages, like tea, coffee or soda. With a bread roll you might say “It was so good, I asked for another (or another one), if you were talking about a whole plate of food like a starter or maybe a side-salad, and you were British you might ask for “second helpings”. Hope this helps. 😎

@@francisbtube Just a tip, but if they are in a train or boat and they are fixed, then they are seats, not chairs. :p No one likes pedantry, especially when it's unnecessary. Save it for actual grammatical errors like confusing "is" for "are" or anything else that will make you unpopular by pointing out.

@@iatsd Thanks of course your right about chairs, silly me seats, I’ll edit mine. Totally disagree about “pedantry” it was/is a heartfelt response to someone who’s first language is not English, and makes funny commentary tracks in English. Just aiding someone who chooses to promote his videos to an English speaking audience. It’s up to him whether he wants the feedback. Perhaps if he responds with a thanks you can respectfully remove your comment.

I got to ride this train when it was still running in regular service - I felt very lucky as an American to do that. Really cool to see it running again at all, even just for excursions. The bed actually isn't as big as you think... remember that these rooms can accommodate two people. One person sleeps perpendicular to the window at the back of the room while the other sleeps parallel to it on the side. So you end up banging a lot of heads or feet together during the night because you're sharing one corner. Still was a really fun trip when I took it. They did used to turn the train around somewhere in the middle of the night so that people in the lounge had an unobstructed view out the back. (That meant people in the suite room had the locomotive view for the rest of the trip.)

@@ModernClassic The car was completely missing from the train. When we went down to that end of the train looking for the lounge, all we found was a notice in Japanese that my wife (who had learned some Japanese) was unable to puzzle out. It became obvious, though, when a couple of crew members came through the door and all that was behind them was noisy machinery from what I thought was a generator car to power the train services. While we did not get the full experience that we wanted (including the Cassiopeia Suite), we are still very happy that we were able to ride the train as intended, as an overnight sleeper train.

This isn't a regular service, it's a chartered ride for nostalgic train enthusiasts, so without the frequency (economy of scale) of a regular service it costs a lot more to maintain the old carriages in tip-top condition, similar to the Orient Express.

My wife and I rode this train in regular service Sapporo-Ueno in 2007. I would have been delighted to be able to get the Cassiopeia Suite, but as you said, it's nearly impossible to book. Even the higher-end sleepers at that end of the train were already booked by the time we reserved. (You couldn't reserve them more than 30 days in advance, and only in Japan; that is, we couldn't book them until we arrived in Japan.) We were also traveling on a 3-week JR rail pass, so we only had to pay for the sleeper upgrade and for portions of the travel running over non-JR lines. (The cost was less than what you had to pay for this trip.) Unfortunately, the lounge car was out of service on our trip, which was a shame, as we were really looking forward to seeing the countryside from it. It was still a wonderful trip. It's a shame that there is only the one paired sleeper train left in Japan. I think that if we travel to Japan again, we might be more likely to take ferries for the more relaxed overnight trips. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Great trip. And yes, locomotive Haulage passengers train in Japan, something rare to see in current time. I hope in the future, this train can be resurrected as regular train like Sunrise Express, and running to Hokkaido directly or indirectly (stopped at nearby Ferry port cities and transferred to Ferry to Hokkaido).
