My husband and I rode the Lincoln Service/Missouri River Runner to its western terminus at Kansas City, MO last year. Theoretically, we could connect to the Southwest Chief at that point; however, I suspect we'd be more comfortable (and have an easier connection) riding the northbound Lincoln Service to Chicago and connecting to the Southwest Chief there.

I appreciated the footage of the LA Metropolitan Lounge; most videos I've seen of Amtrak journeys starting in LA omit that part of the station.

@@LynnForbus Hopefully all 3 of those things are also supplied in the shower/toilets in the bedrooms in sleeping cars, and in the sleeping cars on Amtrak's other LD routes as well. My husband and I will be riding the Texas Eagle from Illinois to Ft. Worth, TX and back this fall, and we have a bedroom booked in the sleeping car.

They are free. You can dine in the dining car or order for delivery to your room. I don’t think they actually cook on the train anymore, as it’s just reheated food. The Monte Cristo sandwich is good, and the flat iron steak is good also. I didn’t care too much for the pasta. It was microwaved for too long and hard. At the stop in Albuquerque there is a small market where you can pick up snacks. There is also a snack bar on the train below the upper viewing car.

So sad that two legs of your trip (bus & train) were so rotten.

I wasn’t surprised by the bus, but I’ve had much better rides in the train. Greyhound sent me a 10% off my next ride coupon and Amtrak issued a $200 travel credit. lol

I didn’t expect much from Greyhound, but Amtrak can do better.
