Come join us on our very first trip on Amtrak!
We paid $270 for 4 tickets from New York City’s Moynihan Station to Chicago’s Union Station for a 19hrs trip in Amtrak Economy. This is the first time for our family of four to try Amtrak. This is a detailed experience so you can plan your trip based on our lesson learned.
Editor's Notes:
- For Amtrak, although we called it Economy, it’s actually called Coach Class. We fixed this mistake in follow-up shorts we published.
- We lost sound on half of our footage. we artificially magnified the sound for a number of scenes. Sorry about the issue.

    One of the very best videos of this route trip / ride for Amtrak !! 👍👍The mom is beautiful & she can cook & their kids are very well behaved & handsome boys !! The dad is a very lucky man !! I loved your enthusiasm & I totally can relate to your feelings & being a bit emotional & sentimental at the end of this video ( ride ) & swearing you'd ride on an Amtrak train ,again !! That was what & how I felt when I took an Amtrak train to San Diego from L.A. a few years ago !! ( it was not my 1st time taking Amtrak ,though ) The staff were so caring & so nice to us ,too !! We rode in a business class. We loved our souvenir boxes from them ,too ! I am very glad to know you guys were very comfortable in coach class seats for 19 hrs .!!! 👍👍I'd love to do this ,too ~!! I'll bring my own meals & snacks as well ! That was a hefty volume of snacks you brought in ,though !! 😅 Haha. I wanna try some of that vegan BBQ 🍔, too !! 😋 I am currently planning to take this route with mom in a wheelchair. So ,debating between this & a roommate, but it's gonna be super expensive to do the round trip from L.A.if we'll do all sleepers cars plus our cruise to England from N.Y. !!! Lol 😅But,we are very determined & excuted for our trip together !!! Thanks for this wonderful video !! It was really great !! I really enjoyed !! You said it felt like a short trip & you wanted more ! I felt this video went really quickly as I really enjoyed !! Which is not really often the case for a long video ! 👏👏👏💜🥁🐉🎤🎶🚈🍽💕💞

    Writing from Australia and having done this journey as part of a trans-Amtrak across America holiday, it was so gratifying to see newbie Amtrak travellers who had such a positive experience. Yes, compared to airline seats, Amtrak coach is almost as good as Business class. Happy and customer focused train staff also make for a positive journey experience. Wait till you eventually travel in the Amtrak SuperLiner cars.

    @@KhizEesa Yeah man I think it's only on certain trains (all the ones west of Mississippi and certain ones east) but if you get the sleeper car on those, the meals are free (I was on the sleep car, in a "roomette", for a family I would suggest "family bedroom")...they give you breakfast, lunch and a four course dinner. 🙂That long distance Coast Starlight trip I took was pretty cool...normally I would go up to Seattle for a weekend, and I would fly, but it was great ride. 🙂

    @@DonnieAzoff_ " nonstop journey from LA to Chicago in Amtrak coach class." Personally, my answer is definitely not. On the other hand, if you can afford to get a room, then yes, definitely, I very much recommend long distance Amtrak. It doesn't replace air travel at long distances, because in most circumstances you want to get your destination in a reasonable period of time. That's why we don't use HSR in North America and Australia. It's not our fault that the deep water ports are so far apart on these two continents, that's how we found it when we got here. 🙂 But if you have the extra couple days of vacation time to spend on travel, and you can afford the room, yes, do it. I have done long distance Amtrak once, and I definitely suggest others try it at least once. It won't replace air travel for most trips but it's an amazing experience to have, if you get a room. 🙂

    FYI, the person getting into the Locomotive is called the Engineer. The conductor is on board the passenger cars themselves. They are the ones that check tickets and run the train from the inside. Alongside the engineer who gets into the cab. Also, the locomotive number has nothing to do with the train number. Just a little few helpful temps for you guys. Great video.

    In french, it is more complicated 😬 The person driving the train used to be called "mécanicien" witch can be translated by "engineer", but the nowdays official word is "conducteur", though the public uses the word "chauffeur", witch is used for road vehicles, but for trains relates to the firenam, and upsets railway conoisseurs 😁 En the train, what you call a "conductor" is called "contrôleur" though the official word is "chef de bord". But "conducteur" used to relate to the person in charge of a sleeping car, especially on former international night trains, where he kept the passengers' tickets and passports, so the "contrôleurs" from all the national railways and the customs agents could check them without waking anybody up.

    I'm glad you didn't experience any hiccups with this trip. That has sometimes been the case with people making the crosscountry Amtrak trips where the train is stuck or delayed due to random issues with the train or no conductor. I can understand doing this trip at $70/person, but I just find that with the limited amt of time I have on vacations to speak, it's hard to justify losing a day or so in travel time. With that said, I think the sleeper car is too prohibitively expensive, as I've noticed in other videos on here. Plus you'd need to reserve 2 cabins and isn't all too comfortable. If you want to explore Amtrak, I suggest two routes: a) Amtrak Cascades: Vancouver to Seattle. Pay a little more for first/business class and enjoy the views + food. b) Amtrak Pacific Surfliner: Double decker train with pretty nice views of Southern California.

  • @KhizEesa

    @KhizEesa

    We were prepared for delays but shockingly we arrived 30+mins early. The time is also a huge factor since we only get to travel on weekends, spending 19 hours in a train may not be productive and it did took away from our time in Chicago. On the positive side, we loved the journey to the point that we want to book a longer train ride next time. These 4 tickets for $270 were a steal but the very next week, same tickets were $900. And yes we agree on the sleeper cabins, it was $1600 for two cabins which is what we pay for a 8 day cruise. Too bad that Amtrak only has the 4 person cabins on the west coast routes. Your suggestions are awesome, noted in our planner. Thank you so much for the helpful tips!

Luckily we have been camping for a while and some campgrounds restrooms can prepare you for what you see in some Amtrak trains. Yes, your trip as I recalled as I've travelling on Amtrak train even before Amtrak became nationwide (formerly individual railroad passengers companies became no longer confused with many transfers) for over 55 years. I hopped once or twice a year acrossing any part of USA as I love it and no matter if the train is delays or on time because train travellings are blasting with wonderful socially different people from all over the places and a beauty by looking views passing different areas too. And I'm using mostly sleeper car that is including no extra cost eating in dining car is the best! And their real foods are great! Able to walk entire each cars or standing out of train car on platform if stop for 10 or more minutes (don't wonder away from platform then the train will left by catch up on schedule or be on-time a minute or two before). While monitoring the completely refueling in locomotives, done by exchanging suitcases in baggage car, finishing filling up water each car and less passengers hopping in or hopping out will be leaving early as a schedule. I used took Southern Pacific (SP) Peninsula Commuter trains for years. SP ran between San Francisco and San Jose, now called Caltrain extended to Gilroy (south of San Jose). For you guys are taking a short trip on any long distance Amtrak to see if you like the train before taking longer trip. Also, check train status (keeping repeating if a train is catch up) for the arrival to save yourself waiting. Enjoy!

    As someone who rides Amtrak alot, as a tip I usually pack snacks and cold foods, like chicken wraps, sandwiches, etc. They do have a microwave in the diner cart. Great video though, I subbed. I also uploaded my own mini Amtrak video. Also as another tip, be very careful leaving train side. I've seen people get left behind. When Amtrak leave, they leave. They may be late to places, but they leave on time.

Sleeping for a train fan (From Germany) was not possible because I want to see everything on the outside. I wondered that the dining car was closes for coach car customers. This was 30 years ago not usual. May be I understood something wrong. I hope to travel with Amtrak one last time again.

    Hint for moynihan, due to the track layout only tracks 5-9 can access the empire tunnel used by all Albany bound trains. Gives an idea where to position oneself for the late for sure limited. Great little greasy spoon with great burgers in an old firehouse building across street from station in Albany. Great to grab dinner from for coach passengers as plenty of dwell time in Albany while Boston section connected.
