Ridgid 14002 Band Saw Must Do Modifications

Ғылым және технология

Sorry the video ran a little long. I was just super excited to finally get this thing working. Modifications below:
Adjustments:
Balance Upper & Lower Wheels
Align Upper & Lower Wheels
Align Drive Pulleys
Upgrades:
- Urethane Tires
- Cool Blocks
- New Drive Belt
- 3/4" Plywood Base
- Harbor Freight Mobile Base
- Timberwolf 1/2" x 3tpi Blade
In my case the biggest improvement came from replacing the rubber tires, which had a flat spot from years of compression by the blade. Next was probably balancing, followed by reinforcing the base with 3/4" plywood and finally changing the belt.
If I were to try and rehab one of these machines again I'd start with balancing the wheels -free- then 3/4" reinforcement of the base and removing the rubber grommets -- less than $10 -- if you have the wood--. Then inspect the belt for obvious signs of memory, replace if necessary --$10-20. Then I'd go straight for the urethane tires for $35. I might even start with the tires if they were badly cracked.
The rest of the "upgrades" are optional but in my case well worth it. $32 mobile base from Harbor Freight, Timberwolf blade and cool blocks.
There's hope for these saws! Much of this stuff should have been addressed at the factory but if you're able to snag one at a decent price it might be worth the investment. Goodluck!

In my industrial equipment supply that I have owned for nearly 40 years, I sell and service all sorts of equipment. During this time I have repaired hundreds of Ridgid bandsaws most exhibiting the same problem you describe in your video. They all have problems centered around two main issues: flat spots on the tires and v-belts that were out of round from lack of use. The most consistent problem causing vibration is the v-belt issue. Change the belt and the problem goes away. If the saw stays idle for a month or so, the problem returns because the belt becomes out of round again due to smaller pulley on the motor shaft. To solve this problem, buy a segmented link belt at an auto parts store, Amazon or Harbor Freight. There’s no need to disassemble the saw for a MDF or plywood base between saw and base. That’s just more unnecessary work and expense. If the pulley tires have a flat spots, replace them with rubber or urethane tires. Take your pick since both do the same job . Rubber belts take longer to use since they must use adhesive to mount to the pulley and must dry over night. Center blade at the bottom of the gullet on pulley. Also, take the tension off the blade if the saw sits idle for long periods of time. Otherwise the problem returns. The main culprit out of all of this is attributed to lack of use. If you don’t use the tool often, problems will develop on their own because of what I said above. This would apply to the $400 Ridgid saw or a $50,000 Cincinnati lathe. Believe it or not, sitting idle is much worse than medium use. I deal with these issues on equipment every day. No need to balance pulleys. They don’t spin fast enough to make any difference. Those same pulleys are used in other makes of lathes and I don’t see problems with them at all. The only problem is people putting out bad information in their posts on the Internet. I

Dude, thanks for your additional comments. My saw was purchased on sale at the home depot, with parts missing. Based on what people are saying I'm going to take your advise and follow through on new tires and pulleys. thanks for the tip on re balancing the wheels - not being needed. Sage advise !

Mucho_Grande If you do get to the point of balancing the pulley wheels, balance them as you would an automobile tire. Add weight to opposite the heavy side. Do not remove metal to balance. To balance, take off the blade. Spin the pulley and note where it stops in relation to a reference mark on a piece of masking tape . Use a Sharpie pen to mark the side of the pulley where it stops in relation to the reference mark. Repeat the process 8-10 times. You will see those marks group close together. Then Use a metal clip to hold a small weight in place opposite the marks. Spin the pulley again and mark where it stops in relation to the reference mark. If the pulley stops close to your original marks, add more weight in small increments. Once the pulley stops randomly at different places, your pulley is balanced. Then epoxy the weight in place. Reassemble saw. All you need is a little time and effort. DO NOT REMOVE METAL FROM THE PULLEY BY USING A DRILL TO PUT SMALL HOLES. I See videos where people do this and all they do is mess up the pulley. Just keep it simple by adding weight. If you mess up, the weight can be removed. If you drill, the metal can not be put back into place. Does this make sense? You might want to remove the rubber grommets from under the motor and just bolt down directly to the stand. The grommets dry out and become hard. You will not find replacements. Or you could use those rubber grommets that come with auto shock absorbers and slice them into half the thickness then bolt down the motor. Either way will work with or with out the rubber grommets.

I just got the 14002 Ridgid for FREE!!! from a guy on Craigslist. 10 year old machine that he told me did not track well. Your video inspired me to make these changes as part of the cleanup and restoration process. Given the price I paid, NOTHING, the investment of improvements is totally worth it. hahahaha thanks great video.

This was a huge help. I too bought one of these off of craigslist and was similarly amused with the previous owner's poor setup. Thrust bearing lined up as a guide bearing. No guide blocks. Blade guide on backwards. Belt was loose. I've been gradually tuning it up and tried the plywood base/rubber pad removal. It was a big help. Down the line I may go the route of replacing the tires, but they seem to be in good condition as is.

Thanks for the video. Picked up a used paint shaker today and after watching your video we were able to reduce the vibration 90% just by balancing the wheels and removing the rubber motor mounts. This weekend we will install a 3/4" MDF spacer between the saw/motor and stand and replace the drive belt. That should smooth it out completely.

Thanks for the information. I have had my saw for about 6 years, changed drive belt to the link type , upgraded to the 1.5 hp motor , riser block kit with 105 inch blade and still have a bit of vibration even after resurfacing the rubber tires. I'm sold on the upgrade to urethane tires now. We can still have the performance of a 1000$ machine after the small improvements. Also, you can sharpen those blades with a dremel using a diamond 7/32 bit. Thanks!

I just lucked out and bought a set of grey Rigid tools with the Emerson motors. I got the 6" jointer, Oscilating Sander, Lathe and bandsaw. Your video was invaluable for the bandsaw. The tools were like new but had been in storage for seven or more years. They were stored well in aheated shop. But just like yours, the bandsaw had been left with the blade tension pretty tight.. Fired it up and you know what happened....shake and bake!! I thought I'd skip all your mods and go straight to the tires. Bingo. That was all it took. Passed the quarter test. Very informative video. Thanks so much.

I'm really glad to hear this. I just picked one of these up today for free that has some wobble to it. I think mostly it he unbalanced wheels. They already put new urethane tires on it. I plan to balance the wheels and the other issues is the bracket that holds one of the bar guides broke and the piece that the table adjustment bolt heads fit in are broke. That part is easy. My main concern is the wobble. Mine is several years old hopefully I can still get some parts for it on a budget.

My saw has bearing guides, something I looked for before purchasing, but the more I learn and use it, the more I would rather use blocks. When I first got it, one bearing guide was missing, so I made a crude block guide from an offcut of softwood - it worked as well as or better than the replacement bearing guide I purchased and run currently. See Matthias Wandel's excellent youtube videos on bandsaw guides.

Haha! You think yours was in bad shape! I bought one of these off of Craigslist for $75 back in 2007. The guy had used it outdoors to cut decorative concrete! It was badly rusted, the orange paint is badly faded, etc. I replaced all the bearings, balanced the wheels, installed urethane tires, installed new blade, resurfaced the table, replaced the bladed tensioner with a crank, added a 6" riser from Grizzly and added a mobile base. I have since had to replace the wheel hinge block and the cast piece that holds the guide blocks. Just now (2018) planning to replace guide blocks with cool blocks because the originals are very worn. I have been happy with this machine. A professional shop might find it lacking, but it is everything a homeowner/hobby woodworker needs.

I also have a Ridgid BS14002 and had to do several improvements as well. I replaced the guide blocks (that slightly touch the blade sides both above the table and below) with Carter Guide wheels. Since these band saws do not come with a fence, I bought a KREG precision band saw fence, which it was that that made the saw bearable to work with. Rockler has these fences and they are great as they give you so many different positions to seet the fence for any applications and KREG offers more goodies for the fence. I had a vibration issue and over came most of it by using a spring instead the threaded rod to tension the drive belt. I am guessing there is 30# tension on the drive belt and it's never slipped once. Now that I have seen thesergeant's video I will replace the tires with urethane tires. I had thought about it for several years but hadn't heard of anyone else doing so until. Another thing to do is when you buy a Ridgid bandsaw, throw away the blade included with the saw and buy quality name brand blades. I use Timberwolf, Grizzly, or Starrett. I also use sanding belts on my band saw.

I have the previous incarnation of this saw and never had the sorts of problems you have. Guess I was lucky. You had some really good ideas and I am glad you got this running well. My only suggestion now is to replace the two thumb screws for the upper side guides with allen screws to give you a clearer view of the cutting area.

OMG I have been messing this this saw for some time trying to get rid of the vibration. I did not do the plywood, but did remove the grommets. Took off the wheel and balanced it. Ran motor with belt and NO wheel ....WOW that was where the vibration was. Put on the Segment belt from Harbor Freight. I can do the nickel test. I did buy new belts from Carter. Makes me feel better. All is Good, Vibration FREE.

I've been trying to get the vibration out of my Ridgid bandsaw. I've done everything you did, and even went an extreme step further and completely replace the metal frame base with a heavy wooden cabinet. Unfortunately, it still has some vibration. Mine is also already fitted with a 6" riser block. I still have rubber pads under the motor still, so will try removing them and see if that helps.

Like some of other commenters, I've had this saw for years and cringe every time I have to use it, but didn't want to get rid of it either. I had heard about stabilizing the base with plywood, but not the other things you mention here. BTW, my RIGID 14" can run on 240, but I haven't tried it, not sure if it is worth it or not. I can see running a table saw on 240 if it is capable, but not sure about a band saw. Thanks for the info, I look forward to applying these fixes and getting more use out of the old gal. It's done its time as a shelf/catch all.

I just picked one of these up and saw your video before I picked up the tool! I believe mine may have been older as the main color is grey not orange. When I turned it on, the machine did shake a lot!! I wasn't sure it was an issue, but I decided to tackle it. Did the plywood top, but also added a shelf in the middle. Removed the rubber grommets under the motor. I'm not sure if I forgot you mentioned HF for the belt or not, but I bought a more expensive V belt from Rockler. This took away 95% of the vibration. I made sure the pulleys were in line and had the right tension. I was told the urethane belts would do nothing for vibration, so I skipped those as well as the cool blocks. I didn't do the spring either as that is needed more for reassign, which I'm doing, at least for now!! I was also able to get adjust the wheels without drilling by adjusting the coplanar. Thanks again for the vid!!

He dropped the cast aluminum guide block (part number 141076 stamped on it,)when I was there and it broke on the cement floor.. So it has set. He also put a 4x4 block of wood, instead of buying a cast riser block from Grizzly for ?? $80? Anyway good tips, I might try and get this thing going, because he used it to build 2 guitars and that was it. Any idea where I can get that part? If you know, I'd appreciate it. • @alaskanfrogman

The wobble in your wheels are from the wheels not properly spaced from the lockdown nut. You need to add shim spacer washers to the wheel hubs in order to snug up the wheels and stabilize it better. There are shim spacer washers available. It is a matter of finding the right diameter and with graduated thicknesses. You need to use a feeler gauge to test the play of the wheels between the mounting hub and body on both upper and lower blade housing. If you shim one, then shim shim the other. Make sure you have matching shim thicknesses for upper and lower wheels. There will be differences in how much the wheels wobble, which are indicators of improper spacing between the wheel hub and the wheel. Once properly and correctly shimmed, all or most of the remaining vibration issues you are experiencing should go away and the machine may actually run smoother and quieter. Good video, nice job balancing the wheels. I am a little concerned that you chose to drill the wheels instead of finding lead weight clips to balance the wheels with. They are available and can be clipped to the inner rims between the spokes. Once in place the balancing clips can be tacked down with JB Weld epoxy which is a strong permanent bond. I was just gifted the exact same model. It was left out in the weather so I need to clean the motor. The tires need to be replaced, the table sanded and the tensioning rod and adjuster need to be replaced. Once I get them installed the saw should work. It will then be a matter of rebalancing the wheels and doing a lot of sanding, cleaning and adjusting. Thanks for the video... very informative.

Prices really are dependant on local supply and demand. I've heard of people getting them for $75 or paying as much as $300 or more. Look at your local craigslist and see what other alternatives there are and make a decision based on that.

Thank you for this video, I decided to buy one of these after watching. I found another really great trick to smooth these out. I purchased a set of 4 vibration pads that are made for washing machines. I picked them up at a thrift store for $3.00 so figured why not give them a try. I first installed the link belt which really didn't do anything. Then I balanced the top wheel and that seemed to help some but not a lot. Today I installed the plywood under the machine and also replaced the lower tire at the same time. This made a very good improvement. The upper tire was already replaced by the previous owner so they are both done. After this the machine was much better but still vibrated more than I would have liked. So, I installed the 4 anti vibration washing machine blocks and wow! they really smoothed the vibration out. Now the machine is so much better that it was. Thanks for the video and hopefully my additional trick will help others watching your video.

Order an upgraded upper wheel assembly now and save yourself some time and trouble later on, the pot metal its made of crumbles under the blade tension and will fail 100% of the time eventually. Luckily there are upgrade quality replacements made of cast iron.

Let the wheel spin without a blade or belt on it. Mark where it stops. You want it to stop randomly every time. If it stops in the same place you either need to remove material on the bottom where it stops or add material 180* from that.

I got one of these from marketplace the other day. Thought I was getting a good deal at $150. 14" bandsaws (at least reasonably priced ones) are far and few between on my local craigslist/marketplace. I obviously did no research beforehand, just saw one review from a woodworking site that gave it good reviews, and assumed it would be decent with the ridgid brand. I was wrong, the build quality is dismal.

+Leroy Farmer I bought this exact saw before I ran across this video. I too had to balance my wheels. It helped to get 2 ceiling fan balancing kits but I also had to drill out my heavy spots. Basically the heavy spot always wants to go to the bottom (no blade attached of course). Just start by adding one of your weights to the exact opposite end that falls to the bottom until it's close enough where you can slowly remove material with a drill to the point there are no heavy spots rolling to the bottom. It will always randomly stop when every rotated when spinning freely.

Guy, band saw wheels just don't spin fast enough, with enough weight, for balance to be all that critical. As long as they're within the general ballpark, it's good enough. As you discovered, your vibration was coming from somewhere else.

I have this saw, vibration horrible and for the life of me I can't get the blade cutting true. The blade cuts at a slight angle all the time as if the tires aren't good but the tires look fine. I don't know but I'm sick of it and want to get something else.

  • @thesergeant3524

+swimbait1 Balance the wheels, replace the tires and see what happens. If the vibration doesn't go away try the belt. Those three should address the majority of the vibration problems with this saw. As for the blade not cutting true, you might want to bump up your blade tension, or adjust for blade drift. Also, set your machine up per "Alex Snodgrass". Hopefully that will solve your problem. I will say this though; I sold this saw and I regret it. I purchased a Rockwell 28-200 to replace it thinking I was getting "vintage quality" but I and had nothing but problems with the Rockwell. Sold that saw and got a Rikon 10-325 (which is great btw--once adjusted) and also restored a 1940's Delta 14". While both Rikon and the Delta are great none of them have compared to the Ridgid in terms of cut quality. Watch the "resawing with Ridgid BS14002" video to get an idea. I had absolutely zero blade marks with this Ridgid. I wish I would have kept it to be honest.

+swimbait1 I have this same saw and the vibration is bad. I have not replaced the tires yet and after seeing this video I bet that will help. I also had really bad blade drift with the Ridgid blades. Blade tension, etc nothing fixed it until I switched to Timberwolf blade as recommended by many others. No drift whatsoever.

Lol. No glue! It's just that smooth. I've had 5 band saws since this Ridgid (Inca, 3 different Deltas, Rikon 14) and none have cut as well as this saw. No visible blade marks on the work piece and it cut very smooth. There's another video I did resawing walnut. Absolutely no blade marks. In retrospect I should have kept it.

THESE SAWS ARE CRAP! Mine had a problem with the blade adjustment and I needed some parts. I found out the parts were OBSOLETE! WTF? My saw was only a couple years old and Ridgid stops selling replacement parts? They say their tools have a lifetime warranty but it's only the until they discontinue the tool. After that, you are totally screwed and your life time warranty just got screwed. I have a Ridgid drill press that is under 4 years old. I need new drive belts and they are also OBSOLETE. WTF? After calling them they told me they cannot help me since the manufacturer doesn't make them anymore. These tools are pretty well made for the average guy, but you will get screwed when you need to replace a part. I will never spend my hard earned money on Home Depot power tools again.

mike peine Those loop belts won't work on this drill press. You will need to buy belts on ebay. Use the belts part number to search. Your other option is to replace the pulleys and that will cost more then the drill press is worth. If you contact the parts dealers they will tell you to replace your drill press.
