Still, the exit is style. It really is winter in Oulu, Finland. Given the tranquility of the video, I kept watching. My neighbor said you can go far with a scooter. Indeed this vlog proves it.

About 14.00 "you can see where it's cracking here"....no thanks, cheerio! 😱... That would have given me the heeby-jeebies! Did I hear the familiar sound of an e-bike motor as you sped to catch up or was it just the ice under your tyres? It was interesting to know that those riding e-bikes seemed to have no battery problems in the cold. I've had an enjoyable Saturday morning nursing the cold I inherited from my wife. Cosy under a blanket watching you on the TV. Thank you for a lovely trip, it was fascinating and looked like a very companionable thing to do. 👍

Yes that was the sound of an e-bike. It was only my second time ever on an e-bike on the public road. The first time was in Brisbane. So in a totally different environment. The batteries of the e-bikes were fine, unlike those of my camera and iPhone... kzread.info/dash/bejne/X52s2tKepMqnoZM.html

@@BicycleDutch thanks Mark, that was interesting, I wonder what Brisbane has done since then for cyclists🤔. I acquired an e-bike during our🇬🇧 lock down to get me out of the house as walking or analogue cycling is difficult with my health problems. Best thing I ever did and your videos helped me get a feel for it again before I started as they are shot so well from the rider's eye view. Now I use the motor to help keep my balance, it's not elegant but it works and i trundle about happily in the warmer months. The bike works fine in the cold but sadly my legs function even more badly if they chill. So I thank you again Mark for helping me to achieve some freedom, it's wonderful and in winter I'm vicariously free watching your journeys. 👍👏

The sea ice can be thick. Real thick. 75cm quite possibly. There is zero reason to worry about any of those cracks, they are all frozen again within minutes of after their first appearance. I think that ice path they rode over that small gulf is cleaned of snow for cars to use. There are some exceptions for dangerous ice - usually they are some river areas / moving water / ice breaker paths. Ive measured over 170cm thickness at large lakes around polar circle. And such thickness can carry a fully loaded timber truck ~60 metric tons, with ease. Well, those occurances are quite a sight though. :) -5...-15c isnt that cold, quite everyday winter weather around here. -30...-35c is about the record at Oulu. And up north at polar circle -50c, and even -60c unofficially. Ive biked around -48c, with a regular mtb, and it becomes so sweaty sport because the friction within the bike increases greatly. I would say the most dangerous winter weather for biking is +5...0c, when the surface of ice is wet - then those studded wheels are real lifesavers. Other tough one is transparent (hardest) ice with some fresh snow on.

Americans with their shit excuses for why they can't add bike infrastructure: "our city gets too cold in the winter! Our city gets too hot in the summer!" Meanwhile in Finland...
