    Every child should be able to ride a bicycle to school safely on protected bike lanes. Every city should become a bicycle city. Transportation planners need to include bicycles in their transportation plans.

    @@HigherQualityUploads Electric bikes are great for hills. That is one reason so many older adults are buying them. They are pedal assist meaning that it senses when you are having a harder time pedaling and it assists you. Test one out you might find you like it.

    Wonderful video again and a great look at Nederland. We could see your camera mount in the shadow which was very interesting. Amazing how you get such a smooth ride over some rougher terrain. Funny how I look both ways before your crossing of a busy road and I see my room on either side of my rollers. Great old habits. I also wanted to ask about the lack of evergreens in the countryside, do evergreens not grow well in Holland?

    Might be a weird question, but I’m American and we don’t have this type of infrastructure where I live - are there apps similar to Waze, but for the cycling routes? So essentially, you can type in where you want to go and it shows you turn by turn how to navigate to your destination?

    I've come around to the idea of making a road on which cycle paths can be established (as is currently proposed by a number of councils in the UK). I'm not sure I see the justification. It's a small area where people do not use the bikes (and it's a cycle path, not a road).

    What is the attitude behind protected cycling infrastructure in rural areas? You rode on a road without any specific cycling infrastructure at 40:20. Is it safe?

  • @betula2137

    @betula2137

    From my minor knowledge, whilst it is not ideal for complete safety, it still has more infrastructure for it than most rural roads in other countries. On the edges of the road, there were different pavings, and it is one lane. This optically narrows the road, and usually forces drivers to slow down to be more careful (felling that they have less leeway in the case of an accident). Therefore, the driver has to take care when overtaking or passing another car, or a cyclist. Because it doesn't seem to be that busy, there is still enough space for these manoeuvres, and it is no real inconvenience to do so. In such a rural setting, it may not have made practical sense to construct a separated or larger on-road cycleway. Luckily, Dutch drivers are likely more careful due to these measures, and from the abundance of cycling. BicycleDutch has a video on cycling lane recommendations in different situations, including advisory lanes which are a bit less certain on standards.

    We like to call those narrow roads 'Farmer roads' as you often find them in areas that are low dencity zones with nature and farmland. You will only see these roads if there is an high flow main road nearby to deal with most of the traffic. Because of that these small roads are handling little traffic. Because of the calmness these roads are safe. Keep in mind that Dutch drivers know how to deal safely with cyclist, often their own children cycle to.

    @@ingmarsteenbergen2619 Not all it seems. Despite the busyness of the road the driver at 1:05:52 seemed like they didn't want to slow their speed at all. I wonder how safely they passed the cyclist that Mark had just passed going the other direction.... Any half-aware driver would know how unpleasant it is to be passed fast and close on a bike.
