Ride one of Europe’s most Spectacular Railways

Montenegro - Bar to Kolasin via the awesome Moraca Canyon. The first time I heard about Montenegro, I consulted an atlas to discover it was part of the old Yugoslavia, situated on the Adriatic coast, sharing borders with Croatia, Albania, Bosnia and Serbia. My wife wanted sunshine and sandy beaches, I wanted a train ride, Montenegro offered both. The coastline was everything the brochures promised and the railway surpassed all my expectations. The train was well presented and our carriage looked as though it has just come out of the workshops after a full overhaul. The line starts by the Adriatic sea at Bar, skirting along the coast to Sutomore where it turns inland passing beneath the coastal mountain range, emerging from a long tunnel to cross the picturesque Lake Skadar on a causeway. The route continues across fertile farm land to the capital city “Podgorica”. Now our journey starts to get really dramatic as we enter the Moraca River Canyon, climbing ever higher, we cross the world’s highest railway bridge (until 2001) before plunging straight into another long tunnel, finally exiting into more stupendous mountain landscapes to re-join the Moraca Canyon for stunning views of the River far below. This is no ordinary train ride, take a seat and join me for a journey you are sure to remember for a long time to come.

Hi Anjali, the colours were beautiful, the scenery was outstanding, yet very few people know about this railway, competed as recently as 1976. Maybe a few more people will be aware of it and the wonderful landscapes Montenegro has to offer as a result of watching this video.

It's a wonderful place, I didn't know much about Montenegro until I went there on for a short break holiday. I checked the internet to see if there were any railways near the town we were staying in. This line was about an hours taxi ride away and one or two of the arranged tours from our hotel included it, but when I tried to book, all the tours were cancelled for one reason or another. My wife and I took a taxi to the station at Bar and this video covers some of what turned out to be an amazing day out.

Another stunning video Tim, as always!! I had a hard time finding this even with google earth. I tried following along your route and finally gave up and enjoyed your video on my new 2k monitor. This route makes you feel like an eagle, looking down at the poor people riding in their cars at the bottom of the valleys. While I was watching, it occurred to me that you are a very un-selfish person. Rather than just taking in the vistas for yourself, you are watching the scenery go by in your view finder, worrying about getting the shot for us, your appreciative home bound audience. I can't thank you enough for all you do, your videos are very special and are much appreciated!!

Hi Scott, thank you for your kind comment, I really appreciate it. I purchased my first video camera in the eighties to make a record of my children growing up, if I had my time again I would have tried to work in television, making travel videos. Micheal Palin is someone I look up to and admire. My youngest daughter lived and worked in China for seven years, travelling all over and learning to speak Chinese. Some of her adventures would have made wonderful TV, she was often the only foreigner in sports events such as swimming across the fast flowing Yellow River before going down stream past a pre-determined point. Having a foreigner competing effectively made the events international and Chinese TV loved that. On another occasion she went to a wedding near Harbin, after the wedding they all went out onto the frozen lake, drilled a hole and caught their dinner. I wish I was brave enough to stop work for a year an return to China with her to record the things we never get to see on regular TV, the children are so curious and the older Chinese love to make fun of Westerners. As it is I design and make plastic injection mould tools and I know I am lucky to still enjoy my job after all these years. it also pays enough for me to see a little of the world. As for following the route taken by our train on Google Earth, I had trouble following it too as so much of it is in tunnels. Thanks again for your kind comment ... Tim.

Hi Andreas, being familiar with Switzerland, you will know there is nothing quite like viewing mountains, blue skies and fast running rivers from the comfort of a railway carriage seat. I knew from the internet this railway offered wonderful views over the surrounding mountains and the tumbling rivers far below, as it turned out, this railway exceeded my expectations, now I have seen a little of the route between Bar and Belgrade, I know I have to return to complete the journey. Best wishes from England.

I once traveled on a similar railway in Slovenia and the valleys were filled with clouds, the view from the window was like flying with just a few mountain tops showing. Hi Rodney, I will be in Belgrade in about 6 weeks time on a railtour. I would like to have stayed a bit longer to make a return trip to Bar, but parts of the line are closed in June for engineering works, so I will have to give it a miss this time. I will be travelling with the" Railway Touring Company" on this occasion. I am not aware of any arranged tours from Belgrade to Bar, but you can book the rail travel with the DB or Montenegro Railways website and hotel accommodation is no problem. Both train travel and hotel accommodation are reasonably cheap. It is definitely on my bucket list of things to do.

What scenery. I presume that at some time in the past, those mountains, that appear to be composed of sedementary rock, were underwater and then, as a result of a collision between tectonic plates, were thrust upwards. Some of the mountains clearly support flora and fauna, while others don't . .those being the most recently elevated ? Wonder what the elevation at the destination is . . It must be quite a feat of engineering to plot the course of standard guage track to reach that altitude without the aid of cog-wheels.

Awesome ride. Editing very strange with repeats (same noises) and, at one point, going in two directions at once. Nevertheless a great introduction to a part of the globe we rarely see ( so much so that Google doesn't recognize it very well ).Amazed by huge cement works and miles of crushed rock.

  • @Timsvideochannel1

    @Timsvideochannel1

    8 жыл бұрын

Hi James, I am pleased you enjoyed the ride. The reason the editing is as you describe is because I film with more than one camera. I fix one or more GoPro cameras to the windows, then I use a hand held camera to get different angles. I do this because by the time I have seen something and the hand held camera has focused, whatever I wanted to film has passed, whereas the GoPro cameras are left running throughout the journey. That is why you sometimes hear and see things twice from different angles. The miles of crushed rock appeared to be gravel from the river bed and of coarse it is ideal for concrete, a material used extensively in most buildings throughout Montenegro.

That is quite a nice view. :P How long does the journey take altogether? I expect there's probably only two or three trains a day along there? I notice that even the small wayside stations seem to have a stationmaster on duty.

www.seat61.com/belgrade-to-bar-railway.htm#.V22ejPkrJD8 - Hi Andrei this link gives more information about the route and the train I was travelling on. I was travelling on the Bar to Belgrade train which runs twice a day. My journey from Bar to Kolasin took 2 hrs 30 mins. There are some local and freight trains as well. I think the station master may also operate some of the signals. I would like to return and do the complete trip to Belgrade at a future date.

this closure is - sadely - not a single event. It happened quite often over the last 10 years, that the Beograd-Bar line had to be closed for extended periods. If this area experiences a large weather/rain event, parts of the railway are destroyed. It happens again and again. The railway was built into difficult terrain; apparently the railway was not protected against falling stones, which are a result of a weather event

Thanks for the extra information. Many of my favourite rail routes have suffered a lot recently, the Coastal Pacific (Earthquake), The TransAlpine (Fires), The Settle to Carlisle line, (Subsidence), The West Coast Main Line (Bridge Washout), Dawlish (Seawall washed away) and the Beograd-Bar Line, for the reasons you have mentioned. It appears no route is exempt from extreme weather damage.

Hello Tim, after georgeous Iskar Gorge at Bulgaria at your railway travel video kzread.info/dash/bejne/i6amo5NveLnRqLQ.html you present another Balkan highlight. While you ride train through gorge at Bulgaria now your train moves at the roof of canyon. Montenegro itself wasn't unknown to me but like the unknown Bulgarian gorge view to that unknown canyon causes same WOW! Curious to your back move video. Heinz

Hello Heinz, it is good to hear from you again. I tried to book this train from the tourists agencies near our hotel in Budva, Montenegro. Although there were pictures of the line in their brochures, they all said the railway was slow and the trains were always late, preferring to sell coach tours. I booked a taxi from Budva to Bar with my wife, hoping the train was running and we would be able buy tickets on the day. The train was running as it does every day, sure it was a bit slow and the return was late, but who would want to speed through such amazing scenery? The ticket price was just 23 Euros return for two us, two and a half hours each way!!!! ... I think this is the best value for money train ride I have ever made. I can't help feeling the tourist industry in Montenegro is doing their country a big injustice by not promoting this stunning railway line. The coach tours run along the bottom of the gorge, whereas the train runs high up with fantastic views, the coach is bumpy and slow, again the train is far superior being both smooth and comfortable. There are tours advertised on the internet using the train from Bar to Kolasin and coach back to Budva, but when I tried to book they said the tour was not running for technical reasons.I hope some of those who watch this video before taking holidays to Montenegro will be tempted do this ride, or better still catch the train all the way to Belgrade and return the next day .... Tim.

Very strange "The Man in Seat 61..." makes more marketing than Montenegro people themself. Maybe they are more busy with their corruption like peoples at Macedonia, Albania, and Kosovo do instead with soft tourism to improve their economics and finally their life?

Montenegro, appeared to more prosperous than some of the other countries I have visited in the Balkans. The countryside looked well cared for, no rubbish tipped at the sides of the road. The taxi drivers and hotel staff were all very nice, although it is best to agree the taxi fare before getting in, the hotel receptionist will tell how much you should be paying. Montenegro looked a well run, fertile and tidy country with a good future ahead of it.
