The Morača river canyon - Banker locomotive pushes freight train high into the Montenegrin mountains
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Scenic part of Railway line Beograd - Bar above the Morača river canyon, Mala Rijeka river canyon and Kruševački potok canyon...
Two locomotives train traction (front and banker locomotive) through tunnels and bridges at most steepest part of the line. The railway line follows the canyons and steeply climbs the slopes of nearby high mountains. Maximum track incline is 25‰. That section abounds in tunnels, bridges mountain cuts, steep rocky slopes and very high cliffs. That makes it very special and unique in this region.
Freight trains heavier than 700t require additional locomotive traction. This is done by adding one locomotive to the end of the train. That banker locomotive pushes the train on the steep sections of the track. As this section of the railway is full of steep construction gradients and curves with very small radius, the train resistance is very high (up to 30daN/t).
Montenegrin Railways used Electroputere LE 5100 locomotives. These are powerful six-axle electric locomotives with maximum power of 5MW. Two of these were used to pull and push the freight train shown in the video. Locomotive cab and part of the engine driver devices are also shown.
This banker locomotive cabride was recorded between Podgorica and Kolašin. It begins with the freight train entering the Morača river canyon. It continues with a steep climb along the edges of the canyon to Bioče station. From there, the railway line makes a large serpentine winding through the Mala Rijeka canyon. It crosses an extremely high and large steel bridge. The Mala Rijeka Bridge is 500m long and 200m high at its highest point. This makes it one of the highest railway bridges in the world and the highest railway bridge in Europe. Then the line returns to the edges of the Morača river canyon. It climbs steeply through Bratonožići and continues its steep cut way to Lutovo station. After leaving Lutovo, it crosses a bridge over a very steep and high cliff and literally enters in the rocks. From the Morača river canyon, the railway line goes into the narrow canyon of Kruševacki Potok. The video ends with train entering the 5km long Trebešica tunnel.
During locomotive cabride the traction current indicators are shown in the video. Engine driver controls the locomotive motors traction currents while driving. The value of the traction force depends on the traction currents. The traction force that this locomotive achieves is over 300kN. As the current values are very high (1000A on each axis motor and 400A between the pantograph and catenary) bright flashes occasional appear in the wet tunnels. Of course, there is also the very powerful locomotive engines sounds as the train accelerates.
Pushed train in the video is a freight train with a coal load from the Port of Bar to the north. Its mass was 739t + two attached locomotives. These are the old 461 series locomotives. The video was taken from the end of the train (from banker locomotive) and occasionally the front of the train could be seen in the curves. Particularly interesting are the parts where the front of the train slowly enters and disappears in the tunnels. The low sun and the special colors of the sky above the high mountains, which are continuously make up the background, contributed to the scenery of the video.

Bonjour, c est vraiment une très jolie vidéo d une des plus belle ligne ferroviaire d Europe, les paysages sont magnifiques
Most interesting journey. So many tunnels built high up in the mountains: must have been a colossal job constructing the railway line there.
Very beautiful video mate! Good job! I like to see Romanian Locomotives working good in other country! Greetings from Romania!

Super snimak, prelep kanjon i veliki trud snimatelja.....Pozdrav
Thank you! This railway line is my personal favorite.
Really stunning. The landscape is spectacular and the track seems impossible. Very nice video.
Very medieval the river and the mountains and also the barren lands look too good extremely soothing
Cool video! Greetings from Romania! Here many people complain that these locomotives are somewhat too big for "rail transport needs", but I think that the Electroputere locos they are very reliable! 🙂

...and they are right. At the end of the '80s (until the CFR was developing, before starting amortizing) Romania's electric rolling stock was like a wrench-set, which is composed only of wrenches 26-32. :) At that time the style was to run long fast trains, even longer passenger trains one-twice a day. Indeed, they needed the power. But time has gone. In the last 50 years railways of Europe have moved towards faster, smaller trains, clock-face timetable, suburban traffic. I'm living 30km far from Budapest (in Gödöllő), and on an average workdays we have 76(!!!) pairs of trains to Budapest (smaller villages on the line have 44). This is only possible with fast, light EMUs wich don't need locomotive change /run round, they have high acceleration, low floor. CFR is standing still. How many pairs of trains are in suburbs of Bucharest, e.g. on line 800? Daily 5-6-7(!!!), mostly composed of heavy, 120t locomotives, regular carriages. On a flat, ruler-straight line. CFR even failed to establish the use of control cars. Imho the "5100kW everywhere" approach IS responsible for the current situation. Fun fact: back in the begin of '80s CFR did create a control car for testing purposes. A few tests were performed on the line 405 from Tg. M. to Războieni. Passangers did not enter the train, because "the locomotive is at the wrong end". Despite the fact, that (among many others) the line 405 is ideal for creating suburban traffic for Tg. M., tests were given up soon, and the control car was left abandoned in Luduş. After 40 years CFR still uses 115t Sulzers with ridiculosly low acceleration and catastrophic high consumption...

@@nazareth978 you are right that sadly, the traffic needs of the 1960s-1980s are not the same as today's traffic needs (rail transport is sadly not what it used to be, but thats a whole other story), so while the LE 5100s are excellent machines, in some cases you will see them pulling one coach and thats it. rather wasteful considering that this amount of power would be better used on a heavy freight train or on a fast passenger train. after all when new this was the second most powerful electric locomotive in Europe, and built to haul trains like the Balt-Orient (Bucharest to Berlin) or the Wiener Walzer (Bucharest to Basel). as for suburban trains, theres barely something like that, partly because in terms of surface the Romanian capital is smaller than other capitals, and secondly because the railway network around the capital aint the most amazing either (the ring line was mostly for freight trains and so on). so yeah i'd agree it would have been a great idea to have EMUs or to start with push-pull trains. i presume you are probably aware of our experiment with EMUs seen as you have knowledge of the experimental control car. sadly the lack of "know-how" didnt help, otherwise we might have had at least EMUs since the 1970s. we are gonna have EMUs but i honestly doubt that they compare with the ones from Serbia or Hungary...
Its amazing to think that some of the line ballast comes from those mountains!

Awesome video Not sure why anyone would want to build a railway there in the first place. I guess the units are not dpu'd and you're just pushing from the rear when it's needed. Looks scary but great video. I'm surprised the mountains are not covered in snow. Posted a link to my page and shared with some other pages just a great video.

I've have been there on NY holydays, gorgeous places, would be great to see that in HDR. The question to author: why there is no functioning railway crossing in Montenegro, no barrier or signal light or sound alarm works on crossing? Train stopped on every one between Podgorica and Bar, it was so often that it may be another reason to call it "Montenegrin's metro".

lack of maintenance sadly, and/or theft of the cabling within the electric panel boxes next to the crossings. a friend wanted to go to Serbia to film level crossings there but when i told him a good amount of them could be broken he just abandoned his plans and went to Bulgaria instead...

Impressive feat of tito era "brotherhood and unity" (which turned out to be wanting) yugoslavia although one wonders if its ever repaid itself, it taking the high way wasn't going to be of much use to local passengers. The rugged landscape certainly makes for a good natural defence. Certainly would be good for a scenic tour. Regarding the breakup of yugoslavia whilst racial and religious differences were a factor there was a prosaic reason - money! Although communist it wasn't part of the soviet bloc and gained support from the EC and the USA (which would have helped to finance this railway among other things) for being a fence sitter, upon the end of the cold war and the collapse of communism in eastern Europe in 1989 it's neutrality was no longer needed and the economic support was abruptly stopped combined with the wealthier north, Slovenia and Croatia resentment of underwriting the poorer south, Serbia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Macedonia, and growing recriminations suppressed by tito about WW2 atrocities in the 1980's meant it was doomed to implode...

terrific video.i dont think this is part of bar -bijole polje route.the tunnels are too many, there is no vegetation on the mountains and the valley is too deep.
This video is astounding. I have seen at least 2 passenger cab ride videos of this section. This video ends at almost where there is a bridge in the tunnel the train just entered. I have not been able to find out what kind of bridge is used or how long it is, could you tell me? It also looks like the track alignment was started on a different alignment at the beginning of the tunnel and then changed to this one; is this correct and why, collapse maybe, bad rock?
@wimglas1345
Жыл бұрын
I did some research about the bridge inside the tunnel, and this is what I found: The german wikipedia page about this railway claims that a very large and deep underground lake was discovered while digging the Требешица tunnel. During an attempt to create a cutting, a bagger and its engineer fell down and disappeared in the darkness. The bridge was build later. But I’m not sure if this source is right, because the next sentence discribes a passing loop that doesn’t exist according to the cab rides from dulevoz. This loop would be inside the tunnel and on a bridge towards the Морача slope. It’s name should be Дубошчица, but I didn’t notice this in one of the cab rides.
